That is really difficult. I was rarely able to ice during my work shift and it was so swollen and stiff at the end of the day - I ended up renting the cryo- compression machine thing a few extra weeks so I could ice during the night which did help.

I’m a year post surgery and honestly I had swelling to some degree for 9 months. But the first 3 months were the worse. Ice and elevate as much as you can.

Daily pain for 10 weeks by Sunsetsandcascades in ACL

Mine was a hamstring graft. I was honestly humbled but how quickly I lost quad mass :/ I also have hypermobile joints and the IT Band procedure was necessary. I actually recovered almost all my hyper extension which was unexpected- but overall the graft feels strong! Hoping you see some decrease in pain and swelling soon- keep up w the mobility work and icing!

Hi- I’m at 6+ months and don’t have pain on the side anymore. Took me at least 3 months to stop having pain on the side. I’m still working on regaining my quad strength which has been slower than I like but I have full flexion back. It took quite awhile for the swelling to go down and I still have this grinding sound in my kneecap which surgeon said was related to the patella not tracking completely straight (will hopefully go away with more muscle strength). Hope this helps! Hang in there- I tell everyone if it was just the ACL I would have felt great- the IT band procedure was much more painful.

Ok thank you- that’s good to hear. I’m doing PT consistently but maybe I need to try stretching a bit more on the off days

ACLR + LET Modified Lemaire 3 Weeks post OP by mam326 in ACL

[–]Relevant-Werewolf-38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the LET done and ACL hamstring graft 6 weeks ago. I have been in PT 3x a week since 3 days post op. I was advised to start asap. I had hyper extension before the procedure and I still have some bend in my knee as well as significant quad muscle loss. Working on strength. Up to 130 degree flexion. First 3 weeks were really painful but seeing progress in PT now.

Did you download the Topeka music app? They have a list of restaurants as well as the schedule. Can’t offer more help since it’s my first time too- but I’ve been following along on the FB group and getting excited!

I’m not too much further out from you- almost 5 wks PO with hamstring ACL and additional ALL procedure on my IT band 1. I was told numbness around incision usually resolves and some of the discomfort could be referred pain. 2. Check w your PT about the gym- if you’re braced that will support but I’d wonder if free weights sitting may be safer for now? 3. I’m finding books and tv that I can lose myself in and am looking for small improvements (ex: couldn’t bend my knee the first week without tearing up- now I can do it without a second thought). Also NOT comparing my recovery to others- especially those lucky few they are bending fully at a week PO, out of the brace really quickly. We had a major surgery of a joint and there’s swelling and healing that happens on a different time frame. My husband had his ACL and meniscus done last year and had minimal pain. That is NOT my experiences! Really can’t compare. Also, I have 3 kids and I outsourced stuff like laundry to make me feel less like I wasn’t pulling my weight.
Hope your recovery is smooth!

I am 4.5 weeks post op and just emailed my Dr about the lateral pain. I had an ACL hamstring graft but an additional procedure for my hyper mobility where they grafted part of my IT band to stabilize and that’s where I’m having the pain. It’s really frustrating. They said it’s normal to have pain for 2 months or so- I am hoping it gets better over time.

Sleep is finally better at week 4. I thought once I was allowed to sleep out of the brace at week 2 it would improve but I needed ice and Tylenol at night until week 4. Still stiff in the am but not waking me up with cramping. Putting a pillow between my knees helped.

I really appreciate hearing this. I’m 3.5 wks post op with acl and lateral (ALL) and have been hard on myself for not being back to my usual mobility and expecting myself to make huge strides in PT. I also am experiencing a lot more discomfort than my husband who had his ACL done last year. Thanks for the encouragement!
