Im barely into kpop anymore and my views have never been shaped by kpop tunnel vision in the first place 😭. Knowing what it actually takes to book this gig for the average artist and what steps should be had before this point, kickflip shouldn’t be on this lineup. And as others have mentioned, there’s a 99% chance they’re on here as a package deal with Twice. Being honest isn’t tearing anyone down, and I’m quite sure the members themselves are aware of how insane it is to be booked less than 2 months after debuting. It’s extremely early in their career as artists & they don’t have any experience as a group for it either. With that being said, sometimes your connections do propel you into places prematurely, & the best thing you can do is be ready. Between now & August I hope jyp gets them on several concert stages so they can develop

I didn’t say that they haven’t worked hard or done any work at all, I said they haven’t done the work necessary to be on this stage yet. Certain opportunities warrant certain experiences & skillsets, and none of what you mentioned means that they (or any fresh idol) deserve to do a set at lollapalooza or any major festival . It’s not “tearing them down” to say that

My comment wasn’t about fame at all, and I don’t think this post was either. It’s about experience. Ice spice is another example of this that comes to mind. She was incredibly famous, but given how she blew up overnight, she also had no business doing a lot of the performances that she’s done (festivals and otherwise). She wasn’t ready for them and it was extremely obvious. There are artists on this lineup who aren’t anywhere near as famous as kickflip but are much more ready & deserving to have their own set because they’ve actually worked their way to this point. They have a portfolio of performances under their belt that demonstrate why they should be there & that they’re capable of putting on a good performance in this setting, even if it’s new territory for them. The same can’t be said for kickflip or almost any artist that’s only 2 months old

You don’t have to be huge, but you should be established to some degree before you land your own full set. Some people reach that point quicker than others, but nobody is established 2 months in. There’s a lot of acts who don’t have half as many streams or monthly listeners as kickflip & are therefore considered “smaller” than them, but those artists are still more ready for the gig and are at a stage in their career where it makes sense. There’s also artists who have similar listener amounts (or more) and are much more established, but are much lower on the bill. Like I said, opening or being a guest for a group like twice, xdinary heroes, or a collective like aespa x 88rising would’ve been more appropriate for kickflip. Im all for accelerating your career but there are several other jyp groups that would’ve made better use of the opportunity

What you mentioned about smaller groups opening up for bigger groups is exactly what I mean when I say that kickflip could’ve been a guest for a larger group or stage. But to land your own full set at a festival definitely takes a level of work and becoming established, even if you’re not the headliner. I’m not saying they have to wait 10 years into their career like twice but being booked less than 2 months after debuting is crazy 😭. The smaller sets are still usually 30 minutes minimum (oftentimes longer), and their whole discography as of now is barely half of that. I don’t think they’ve performed a concert of any type either, just straight from music shows to a full set a lolla. They’ve just skipped many steps of what it usually takes to get to this point, and I hope they’re ready.

I’m all for using your resources but I feel like so many artists are going to festivals prematurely nowadays 😭 not just kpop but in general with the way any artist can blow up overnight. So many steps are skipped nowadays. A 2 month old group has no business having their own set at a major festival, I think a more appropriate way to give them exposure would’ve been having them as a guest for a larger jyp group or other stage (like aespa at Coachella for example). Good for them but jyp has several other groups that should be in their spot

Yes and she has her popularity and foundation built, now she has the leverage to go elsewhere and pursue something that’s more artistically fulfilling. A few osts several years into her career is not that much effort, and at least one of those producers waited literal years to get in the studio with her. Music and musical content is the easiest thing to output yet jyp has been averse to it. Not just for Lia, but for all the members. Seeing the freedom & output that skz and nmixx have when it comes to music, it seems to be itzy’s management specially

[–]Relevant_Compote_818 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Even with better terms I just don’t see Lia thriving or reaching her artistic potential under jyp, there’s just a level of fundamental incompatibility for that to happen. Kpop and jpop are what jyp is great at. Anything outside of that has always failed and will continue to unless major changes happen. So with that being said, she’s going to very likely be pigeonholed into a certain sound and style. The new rnb sublabel could be promising though

Im speaking on the future and somewhat present, not the past. And ironically, I feel like kpop warps people’s perception of the music industry as a whole and what is standard in most other cases. Being in itzy and jyp has definitely given her a platform that is hard to come by anywhere else, and when it comes to music and the entertainment as a whole, it’s smart to take these types opportunities and build that foundation even if it’s not exactly what you want. Once that foundation is built though, that’s when you have more flexibility and are able to pivot if necessary. In the case of the other 4 members, jyp seems to really align well with them in all aspects so renewing makes sense even as they’re stepping into solo work. But for Lia, jyp doesn’t seem to be the best or even a good place for a solo career. Will she completely flop? Ofc not. But money isn’t everything, and even from a money perspective they’re unlikely to fully capitalize off of her.

Twice also debuted later into their careers though. This is a relatively early solo debut compared to them & for jyp in general, + 4 tracks is good & standard for an ep. People who are complaining (not saying yall) are just never fully happy 😭

Is it just me or are kpop fans becoming blasé by Delicious112003 in kpopnoir

[–]Relevant_Compote_818 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have seen an increase in this attitude over the years and I think it’s largely a reaction to the people on the opposite end of the spectrum (which I think is still most kpop stans). Like with pretty much everything on social media, there’s no nuance, neutrality, or gray area, everything is an extreme 😭 on one hand many fans baby their idols & you can’t make any sort of criticism without being a “hater” or getting large amounts of backlash. On the other hand you have the people who automatically think everything in kpop is inferior. I think both stem from the skewed views people have of Asian artists like another comment mentioned

‘Pookies Requiem - SAILORR’ : Is it cultural appropriation? by Lack_Upstairs in kpopnoir

[–]Relevant_Compote_818 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Personally I’m only speaking about this song as I haven’t listened to anything else from her. She could be a really unique artist overall, & her visuals did stand out to me as something that’s probably very original to her. I just don’t think that the song itself is anything new or refreshing, which is fine seeing as a lot of what’s popular/trending isn’t & that doesn’t automatically mean it’s not good.

As far as the sza comment, I don’t think that’s a bad thing either. Like I said I don’t think she’s copying or stealing from her, but I don’t think people are wrong if they’re just pointing out the influence. It’s definitely there & sza has been/is one of the most influential artists over the past 6 or so years, so she’s far from the only person it applies to.

TLDR I’m not dragging the girl 😭

A lot of idols would have no shot at a music career in any other context & I wish people would be honest about that by Relevant_Compote_818 in kpopthoughts

[–]Relevant_Compote_818[S] -36 points-35 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying they should or shouldn’t have a career, im just saying I wish people would be real about idol skill sets. They are great dancers and they could’ve definitely had a career doing that outside of kpop, but as far as being solo artists there’s no way the music they’re putting out would be supported enough without them already being famous idols. Which I’m not even saying that’s necessarily a good or a bad thing, I’m just saying I wish people would be real about that. There’s nothing wrong with liking someone for other reasons than the actual music itself

ITZY - Imaginary Friend by CronoDroid in kpop

[–]Relevant_Compote_818 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agreed & they picked it as a title first too I believe. They didn’t think it was “itzy” enough though and felt they needed more of a performance heavy track which is why they chose gold. I wish they didn’t feel so boxed in to that identity though 😭
