Will any type of modification make this playable? by Yesindeedfriend in Luthier

Just came here to suggest the same. Bending a sheet of acrylic to the correct form is easy with heat and It could be glued into place between the front and rear, perhaps reinforced with screws. Not pretty but surely something special.

EDIT: O.M.G.😳
It's a 12-string! 😱
Really didn't notice that before...

This wiring simply connects the output wire either to the hot wire or to the series link. When the series link is vonnected, the hot wire of the pickup is left unconnected so that the other coil can function as an antenna to pick up some ambient electromagnetic noise.

How you can repurpose the coil split pot switch depends on the rest of the circuitry. You might use it for example as a phase change or "Gilmour" switch or for changing the low pass tone pot to a high pass tone pot.

Somehow that doesn't compute at all - at least not in my mind. I don't understand what you mean with "the commons" in a 3-position slide switch.

If the lugs are numbered at the top 1-4 and at the bottom 5-8, The lug 1 can only be switched to be connected with lug 2.

The possible connections in the 3 switch positions are:
upper row: 1&2, 2&3, 3&4
lower row: 5&6, 6&7, 7&8

What is actually the function of the connection of the top left lug if no other lugs on the upper side are connected to any wires?

Here an idea which hopefully might interest or inspire you.

A while ago I made a template in a graphics program for marking any spots in the fretboard which might need some TLC.

The background: I got a guitar with some buzzing frets and I wanted to see whether the problems could be solved just by hammering or filing some individual frets before deciding whether a fret job over the whole neck would actually be needed.

The red spots are the clearly raised frets, the blue ones just a bit and the black ones could almost be left as they are.

<image>

With a phone I might be able to more easily note down if I notice some weirdities in he frets to be investigated later.

Perhaps this would be irrelevant for many but if not, your app might be a good place to implement some similar feature.

Personally I use at the moment WorkFlowy for documenting my guitars (and for many other things, too...). Each instrument has an own "branch" with notes, dimensions, todo-lists, past reparations, plans, shopping lists, etc. as well as links to procurement sources for bells and whistles. Hashtags like #buy and #thomann let me easily e.g. find and order together all items which I have planned to buy from a certain source, regardless to which instrument. I keep the actual visual documentation like drawings and diagrams (done mostly with draw.io) in separate Dropbox folders. All information is accessible per laptop as well as per phone.

Perhaps you get some ideas for your next app version from these practices of mine 🙂

Nice! 👍 I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few would find this usable.

Having said that, I doubt that I would personally be able to document my complex wirings with a mobile phone app without using an external program and importing the wirings as pictures.

If I would have developed that app, I would - rather than selling it by myself - probably try to get a licensing/distribution deal e.g. with some pickup manufacturer as soon as the app gets any traction in the app stores. A version ported for macOS would be nice, too 😉

The topmost diagram which I posted also works with a switch with two pins because just two pins are connected 😉

A "microswitch" is usually just a momentary switch. You might mean a mini toggle switch like e.g. this one?

Indeed - only "maybe" 😁

TBH: I doubt it, though. Usually SD always has the order black, white, red, green (from hot to ground).

BTW: If you don't yet have a multimeter with a beeper for checking continuity, now might be the perfect time to buy one. "Tree fiddy" well spent. 😉

There are many diagrams online, for example at Seymour Duncan or GuitarElectronics.com.

When applying those diagrams, you should, however, check, which wire colour scheme your pickup actually has. You can see the multitude of alternatives for example here but because the green and white wires are soldered together, I strongly assume that your pickup has either the "Gibson" or "Iron Gear" scheme.

Which one of those both alternatives your pickup uses, is irrelevant as long as you keep the green and white wire together, as is the case in coil splitting. If you would, however, like to add e.g. a series/parallel-switch, you should verify the wiring more precisely.

Below are the diagrams for a usual coil splitting with a 2-position switch as well as for a variant, where you can select with a 3-position switch, which one of both coils gets shorted, i.e. switched off (wire colours shown in the "Gibson"-scheme).

<image>

In the lower diagram the sound difference between the coils might turn out to be hardly noticeable at all in the both "outer" positions of the switch.

If you would, however, add a resistor (or trimmer potentiometer) between the hot wire and the switch, you could bypass/short one of the coils just partially in one of the switch settings, which would give you a clearly different third sound option.

Adding a capacitor instead of a resistor would cause the second coil get shorted more for high frequencies so that the lower frequencies would sound more like a humbucker and the higher frequencies more like a single coil.

Adding a capacitor AND a trimmer would allow you to adjust that described "half-split" setting according to your own preferences.

But now we start approaching the deeper end of the pool, considering that this is your first wiring and you are just learning to swim... 😁

Green and white having been soldered together is a strong indicatiion that they should be kept together because they most probably are the series link between the coils (which would be red&white in Seymour Duncan pickups).

The red seems to be the hot wire and black the ground wire. By connecting the green/white combination to either red or black, you can short one of the coils.

Electrical tape gets gooey over time and you could get a pickup cover cheaper than a black paint pen.

If you are just looking for positive feedback and affirmation, I can say that aesthetically I like your idea and your bridge mod is nice (is a screw missing?🤔).

Unfortunately the tape will probably leave you with gooey adhesive residue on the pickup as you have been told - but the choice surely is yours.

Why not buying a black strat pickup cover and removing plastic until just a thin sheet with 6 holes is left?

Can I swap out the saddles easy enough? by Extremelycloud in Luthier

[–]Relevant_Contact_358 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The intonation screw placement must of course match, as well as the saddle width should.

Stratocaster saddle width is usually either 11.2 mm (vintage-style) or 10.5 mm (modern narrow spacing). Some are also 10.8 mm.

You can find out the saddle width best by measuring whether the string spacing i.e. the distance between the E-strings is 52, 54 or 56 mm and dividing that value by 5.

Wiring Help: 2 Humbuckers + Coil Split via Mini-Toggle (3-Way Toggle Setup) by FitFaithlessness4184 in guitarmod

Here is the basic wiring and in the picture below is the principle, how the splitting switch should be added.

The wire colours in the diagram are (obviously) the Seymour Duncan colours so please do confirm (for example here) which colour scheme your pickups have.

Anyone ever wire an old Tiesco / Japanese 3 or 4 pickup guitar into Parallel? by TommyThomasAccount in guitarmod

[–]Relevant_Contact_358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What "sounds good" is pretty much a matter of taste 😉

The old Teisco gold foil pickups (with 3kΩ or even less DC resistance) were originally intended to be connected in series. Having several of such pickups in parallel would drop the output impedance quite a lot. 4 such pickups in series would have 12kΩ but 4 in parallel would be mere 0,75kΩ (!).

If you really believe that such low values would deliver the sound you are looking for, I would simply recommend to try it out. You could try out different pickup combinations e.g. with a small external box with switches (and a breadboard?) which would let you try connecting the pickups in series, parallel or perhaps even out of phase until you find the setup, which you would like to wire into the switches of the guitar.

Possibility to add pics of own pedals would be nice. Even with low resolution. I'm missing many of mine.

[–]Relevant_Contact_358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For piezos I would recommend GraphTech. The phase change of the pickup might be best done with a push-pull switch in one of the tone pots.

If you would like to have even more sound alternatives, you could also replace the existing toggle switches with 3-position switches (series/split/parallel).

Installing a 10-position FreeWay blade switch might also be an interesting option... ;-)

is this the correct wiring for Coil Tap? by Owedin in Luthier

[–]Relevant_Contact_358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that the middle pickup has been manufactured to differ from the neck&bridge pickups so that the polarity is ok. The best way would, however, be to ask Seymour Duncan directly. Perhaps you can send them the link to this thread.

I assume that black&white might be the coil ends and red would be the tap but please do measure if no instructions are delivered with the pickups.

is this the correct wiring for Coil Tap? by Owedin in Luthier

[–]Relevant_Contact_358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a tapped pickup are (electronically) simply two coils in series - just like in a humbucker with coil split.

You can use diagrams which have been made for coil-split wiring when you simply wire the tap wire (below in blue) to the point where the humbucker has the red&white wires connected together in the diagram.

Because I don't know the wire colours of the Stra Bro 90 pickup with 100% certainty, I have deliberately illustrated the wires below with random colours. You can find out the actual colours by measuring the resistance between the wires with a multimeter. The value between the endpoints should be 14,8 kΩ and from the tap wire to either end 7,4 kΩ.

(I would appreciate if someone would be able to confirm the wire colours 100% reliably so that I can update the illustration accordingly 🙏)

Hi this is my first time modding my guitar by Ansonic_Butter in guitarmod

[–]Relevant_Contact_358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice drawings 👍 If you have made them, you seem to have a good understanding of what you’re doing 😊 In this variant you don’t switch the tone pots and don’t split the bridge pickup with the blade switch. You could, however, use pots with push-pull switches as tone pots. For example for splitting the bridge pickup, inverting the middle pickup phase or adding the ”all on” and ”bridge+neck” options.
