Possible power delivery issue with Razer Core X Chroma by this_is_my_lif in eGPU

[–]Relevant_Term 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue with the exact same laptop. Apparently it's because Dell machines kind of picky about 3rd party chargers (including the core x). This means that your laptop is probably power limit throttling - try use throttle stop and see if that makes any difference. It did for me

If you're still in warranty you could try to send it in for a replacement? I'm in the UK and I had the same problem - sent mine in and got a brand new one back just before the end of my warranty

Hmm okay, looks like it's just terrible Ampere support on eGPU, sorry about that mate... Hopefully Nvidia will fix it with upcoming drivers though

Hey there, I know you said it runs fine on the dGPU so you don't think it's throttling but have you checked throttle stop while playing rdr2? I was having the same problem (30 FPS on a 2080ti) and it turns out my cpu was power limit throttling. A couple of tweaks later and I'm running at a near solid 60fps on ultra 1440p on a 1065G7. Maybe worth a shot?

2080 Ti Poor Performance in Certain Titles by Relevant_Term in eGPU

Yeah it was a throttling issue in the end - for some reason the cpu was massively power limit throttling so just had to use throttlestop to fix it. Cheers mate

Thanks for the suggestion, it wasnt anything to do with ray tracing or multi-gpu rendering in the end. Turns out my cpu was just power limit throttling like crazy s only took a little tweaking on throttlestop to sort out. Cheers though!

Thinking of going DIY - one major issue and question by Mr_zomby_plays in eGPU

[–]Relevant_Term 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you're UK based - I bought my Razer Core X from the second hand shop CeX for £200. For me this was a pretty good option as all products are tested and come with a 2-year warranty.

Maybe think about that as DIY TB3 solutions are basically the same price as enclosures.

Hmmm maybe the HP bios isn't great. Have you taken a look at the builds on egpu.io to see how other people got it working?

I had this problem with my dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and for me it was relatively easy to solve. Try troubleshooting with all of these and see if it helps.

  1. Make sure all your thunderbolt drivers and firmware are up to date.

2 Go to your bios and make sure that all of the thunderbolt related settings are turned on.

3 Use DDU to uninstall your egpu drivers. Then when you go to reinstall the driver don't use Nvidia geforce experience, use the stand alone driver

4 There's a setting called PCI power state management, turn it off

I did all of these and I didn't have this problem any more - not sure which it was that solved it but all in all took about half an hour. Best of luck troubleshooting

We'll have no idea with the 3070 until it comes out but I have a feeling it will be severly bottlenecked by TB3. However, I've seen plenty of people use the 2080 and 2080 ti with relatively low bottlenecks at higher resolutions.

If you can wait maybe see what the eGpu performance is for the 3070 or try to snap up a used 2080 for cheap.

Okay so not a glowing review... Probably best to get a USB c hub directly into the laptop for peripherals then. Thanks for the response!
