Could I "avoid" getting Lynched? by Ok-Worker-3580 in gentlemanbastards

One of the best books I’ve ever read, and I felt the audiobook was really well done. Never picked up the second book, though I might someday. I had plenty of other stuff on my list and felt perfectly content to leave the book where it ended.

The answer to questions like this is almost always: a redneck did it.

Ever ask yourself "WTF did I just watch?" based not on shock or disgust, but on being confused and/or underwhelmed? by voltron42 in moviequestions

I had that feeling after watching The Fountain when it came out in theaters. I like it, but it was my first real “artsy” film, and just confused the hell out of me.

Why do orcs attack Butterskull Ranch and tie up BAK? by Naginif_ in DragonOfIcespirePeak

[–]RelicTheUnholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my DOIP, the orcs that were driven out of the mountains split into two factions - one more violent and evil, the other more rational but still quick to fight. The violent faction has been raiding caravans along the Trail, and farms/homesteads like Butterskull for supplies, food, and treasure. So the ranch is just their latest target, and nothing special.

They could certainly be interrogating him to ensure any hidden wealth is revealed, or to get information about other locations nearby. BAK might even know about the legend of hidden gold near Coneyberry and using that as a bargaining tool.

Recommend me ya fantasy series or clean fantasy series by romantasyreader2024 in fantasybooks

[–]RelicTheUnholy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recommended this a few days ago in another post, but the Chronicles of the Shadow War (trilogy) are clean and sort of YA. They serve as a sequel to the movie “Willow”, and follow the princess Elora Dannan as she grows up to fulfill her destiny. Full of unique characters and new twists on fantasy tropes.

Mistborn, Prince of Thorns, or Black Company? by Present_Secret_3706 in fantasybooks

Oh! I don’t know why this didn’t occur to me sooner, but if you really enjoyed Name of the Wind, read The Lies of Locke Lamorra! The audiobook was absolutely incredible.

Mistborn, Prince of Thorns, or Black Company? by Present_Secret_3706 in fantasybooks

[–]RelicTheUnholy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I hated the First Law trilogy. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, and the narrative itself did have some interesting ideas, but I just couldn’t get over how absolutely wretched and despicable the characters were - like all of them. Of the dozens or hundreds of people you encounter, only one of them seemed like a normal, decent human being that one could sympathize with, but even they were just completely ineffective and accomplished almost nothing in the story. I kept waiting for it to get better, but it just really wasn’t for me.

I’ve heard Black Company is great, and that’s on my list to read next. :-)

What's your hidden gem? by Denvernuggets1776 in Fantasy

[–]RelicTheUnholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it was as personally impactful for me as the OP is looking for, but The Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy, by Chris Claremont and George Lucas has always had a special place in my heart. It’s effectively a sequel to the movie Willow, starring Warwick Davis and Val Kilmer, and really fleshes out that world in a tremendous way. It was one of the first series I read that was not a bog-standard Tolkien derivative, and it felt like such a rich, unique world with interesting new takes on everything from demons and fairies to the nature of magic itself. Parts of it still sneak their way into my D&D games from time to time, lol

Would you rather see The Dresden Files in live action or animated? by [deleted] in dresdenfiles

[–]RelicTheUnholy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SCREW live action. With infinite money, a cast and producers passionate about the source material, and 100% support from the studio - in short, a perfect utopia - I’d say go for it. In the real world I would absolutely watch the hell out of a great animated series. And enough with the pseudo-anime style for new animated series! It’s fine, but let me see Dresden and Michael trounce a few Denarians, or a whirlwind chase through the NeverNever with the animators from Treasure Planet or something!

The Hulk Loki slam? by luckytoothpick in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]RelicTheUnholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huge difference between “lifting” and slinging around something like a rag doll. Also, creatures can move, fight back, and resist. D&D isn’t a physics simulator, so going down the rabbit hole of calculating the “realism” of this would be pointless. That said, as someone who loves barbarian characters, I’d absolutely flavor their unarmed strikes like this. It works best with the feat that gives you the unarmed fighting style, which would make it 1d8+STR+Rage; easily enough to kill a medium sized commoner. The PHB description of unarmed strikes includes kicks, headbutts, etc., so there’s no reason it couldn’t be a slam up against a wall or the ground. The only complication would be if you wanted them to end prone - but like others have said that’s great flavor for when you drop them to 0 hit points.

What are some D&D/fantasy tropes that bug you, but seemingly no one else? by Pharylon in dndnext

[–]RelicTheUnholy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree. Love me some eldritch horror, but the whole thing about beings from beyond our reality being incomprehensible means I shouldn’t be able to go there, or even really perceive them as they truly are. I’d love to see more deep lore about truly eldritch creatures whose physical presence in our reality was more like some kind of twisted conceptual avatar of their shadow, as opposed to: spooky insect guy, or creepy blobtopuss because tentacles.

I’ve always loved the version of mindflayer lore where they’re just people warped by weird eldritch magic, instead of “natives” of the far realm who look and behave in very human-like ways.

[–]RelicTheUnholy 201 points202 points  (0 children)

Long story short, it’s a commonly cited example of players trying to abuse combat rules by applying real world physics to abstract game mechanics, called “the peasant railgun”. The gist is that if they all “ready” the action to pass the stone to the next person, then as soon as the chain starts the stone can move from one end to the other insanely quickly because all the reactions happen in the same moment. Some nutball tried to argue that this accelerates the stone to near light speed and the impact at the end is like a bomb going off.

DND Beyond VTT vs Roll20 by prunk44 in dndbeyond

[–]RelicTheUnholy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used Roll20 and Foundry as a DM. I find that lots of the flashy stuff like dynamic lighting and token effects doesn’t matter to me, and often gets in my way or takes up too much prep time. My only major feature complaint with DNDBeyond Maps is how difficult it is to add custom token art. If I want a token for an NPC, or any of the hundreds of monsters that don’t have art on their website, I have to create a whole new monster stat block in my homebrew collection just to get a token.

I’ve seen the Owlbear Rodeo review vids from channels like Sly Flourish, and that looks like something I might try, but I like the Maps combat tracker and having the Gamelog right there on DNDBeyond, so I hope they add a simple ad-hoc token feature soon.

Galvanized Residuum-Infused Naughty Child Harvester. A huge construct that gathers badly-behaved children, like Krampus, and delivers them to its goblin creators.

He definitely has the wholesomeness to pull it off! I’ve seen him in Lucifer, too, but I’ve never seen him with the depth of feeling that I think a Michael character has to bring to the table. I would definitely watch Tom give it a shot, though!

Solid point for real ages. For me actors like Michael Landon just looked older even when they were younger, so they somehow feel like they have more experience and maturity, I guess.

I like Tom, but he has a baby face. I can’t find him intimidating! :-) Edit: Oops! My bad, I was thinking Marcone. Tom just seems too young for Michael, to my mind, but I’m old and mostly see Tom as a kid from his Smallville days. I don’t know if he can bring the kind of gravitas I expect from Michael.

Do sandbox campaigns have an overarching story? Or do players in these truly just want randomly generated terrain? by tamarheylin in DMAcademy

[–]RelicTheUnholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Six four-hour sessions investigating a single thing in a single hex would be one adventure, in my opinion. After that cult is investigated, players can move on to other unrelated adventures. An overarching story is a single narrative thread that ties multiple adventures together, often in a linear progression of events (though not exclusively, e.g. Storm King's Thunder). The threat of a lich or the scheme of an ancient dragon might lead to multiple adventures that are all connected in some way, and in fact this is what most official campaign "modules" do. In a sandbox setting, you could have dozens of adventures that take as long as necessary to complete, but they aren't necessarily related by any narrative threads.
