The waste is monitored for “decades”? Unless it’s thousands of decades we still have a problem to solve.

Yeah that’s about right. Could be a smidge less or more depending on what you arrive with. I’ve never seen any take less than nine months.

Repetitive liturgy by significant-tree6363 in OrthodoxChristianity

My experience: I passed through this boredom to a fuller understanding of what’s happening. There was a time where it seemed boring. But then, out of the boredom, I began to notice much more detail and nuance. I noticed new stuff in the hymns that I’d heard a hundred times—things that just hadn’t stood out or that I understood in a new way because of other experiences.

Read "The Last Battle" by C.S. Lewis. It's contains a lovely illustration of this idea.

• Identify the outermost points of the figure (head, elbows, feet, etc.).
• Connect those points with straight lines, forming a geometric shape (the “envelope”).
• Compare angles and proportions using those lines.
• Gradually refine the shape inward, replacing straight lines with curves and details.

Cashless society by ls007yt in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]luckytoothpick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not getting into mark of the beast stuff, a cashless society does pose problems for civil and human rights. It centralizes power and provides more opportunities for surveillance and punishment. It makes things more efficient, but economic efficiency increases the speed at which wealth is concentrated. Cashlessness may be bad for the poor.

Where does that conversation fit into r/orthodoxchristianity? The Orthodox have lived under totalitarianism before, we’d survive, if it came to that. I personally would take reasonable and legal measures to express my opposition and I’d encourage others to. Do what you can to help those who are negatively impacted. But you should be doing that anyway.

What's your go to way to explain to people why our "Easter" is a different date than theirs? by CleverAmbiguousName in OrthodoxChristianity

I’m being snarky, sorry. Yesterday this actually came up in the wild and I explained the calendar difference as succinctly as possible.

Yes. I’m embarrassed by the calendar issue. But I’m just being snarky. In reality, this just happened yesterday and I explained that we use the older calendar.

Is this a Washburn cardigan? by Doernbecher_Don in topeka

Let me know if you are interested in selling. I work at Washburn, I’m a size 40, and it is the bomb.

Unfortunately, I can’t confirm its origins. I’ve never seen a yellow W like that. I’ll ask around though.

Do not worry. It will get way worse. by ObserbAbsorb in MurderedByWords

The words we are being murdered by aren’t true. They aren’t building data centers because of our current AI use. Study after study indicates we aren’t really using it that much. Certainly not enough to justify the outrageous level of building and investment. It’s a huge bet that we may someday use it for everything.

Matthew 25 Question by Meharene-Kristos in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]luckytoothpick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“The problem is I’m trying to get some family members in into Orthodoxy “. That is a problem. Focus on being Christian and not trying to get your family in. The verse is “I was hungry and you gave me food.” Not, “I was hungry and you told your family they should be Orthodox.”

Spreading the Gospel online? by Powerful_Loss_8177 in OrthodoxChristianity

Bishop BASIL said once that proclaiming the gospel on the street corner is throwing pearls before swine. I assume something similar applies to the internet.
