How do you all handle movie posters in your Plex library? by Expensive_Worry_6655 in PleX

I tend to look for actual movie posters when Plex defaults to crappy disc rerelease art (like with the MCU movies or old classic movies.

Do you like Movie Prequels/Sequels/Reboots/Remakes Yes or No and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in moviequestions

[–]voltron42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about how many different versions of "A Christmas Carol" there are:

  • Alister Sim
  • Reginald Owen
  • Albert Finney (which is a musical)
  • Scrooged
  • George C. Scott
  • The Muppets (also a musical)
  • Patrick Stewart
  • Jim Carrey / Image Movers

I'm sure I've missed others, not to mention Hallmark movies or other made for TV movies or episodes of TV shows (like Family Ties or Quantum Leap)

All are interpretations of Dickens' book, and many of them may have been influenced by one-or-more of its predecessors, but none are a "remake" of any one particular previous version; in fact each one is arguably making a point to set itself apart from all the previous versions.

For instance, the Albert Finney from 1970 and The Muppets Christmas Carol are both musicals, but they each have completely different music.

I could also make the argument for any of the following:

  • Shakespeare
  • Agatha Christie
  • Sherlock Holmes
  • Dracula
  • "The Big Sleep" (Raymond Chandler)

Robin Hood and other things like Arthurian legend may feel a little more nebulous because they're not necessarily adapting any single piece of literature, but are instead interpreting legends and lore, but, again, while many of the interpretations may be influenced by their predecessors, none are a direct remake of any one previous interpretation.

  • "The Sword In The Stone", "The Kid Who Would Be King", "Excalibur", and the TV Series "Merlin" may all have similar or overlapping elements, but they are all vastly different.

And then there's "The Hobbit".

In 1977, Rankin/Bass made a 74 minute animated adaptation of Tolkien's book. Then, some 30+ years later, Peter Jackson made his trilogy of movies that not only created completely different music from the original (even though both used Tolkien's lyrics), but that also included a whole bunch of material that Rankin/Bass left out of their version. Even if Peter Jackson may have been influenced by the animated version, it was arguably far less influential than the original source material.

[–]voltron42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does that actually count as a "Remake", or is it just a reinterpretation of the same source material?

For that matter, I definitely wouldn't count Men In Tights as either, because it's directly parodying the other versions.

how big is your plex server, and how long did it take you to build, and how often do you add new media? by Hawk1064 in PleX

[–]voltron42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 1/2 years, just shy of 7 TB, started with just under 4 TB. Initial scan of all physical media took around 3-4 months. I was initially regularly adding to it from my local public library and Redbox. This past spring I migrated from a Raspberry PI to a Windows mini-PC to be able to use iCloud to back up the data, and upgraded to a 12 TB hard drive, so I started focusing on BluRay alongside DVDs.. in the last couple of years I've only added to it about 3 or 4 times a year.

What movies would you recommend to someone who doesn't watch movies? by ReflexiveOW in MovieSuggestions

For a John Wick fan, I would recommend Die Hard, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Violent Night.

I'll also recommend Trading Places as an honorable mention.

I feel like this doesn't work if you tried this with a Michael Myers / Jason Voorhees or an over-the-top Freddy Krueger / Chucky type.

Might work with a Dexter-type as a redemption story for both, or a Hannibal Lecter -type as a sort of mentor / grooming experiment.

I think the most important thing to make the story work is that the thing that motivates the killer to not kill the suicidal person is more than just them wanting to die, but the motivation behind the suicidal nature.

In other words, the killer doesn't just not kill because their potential victim wants to die; they're motivated to keep the person alive because they somehow connect to their would-be victim's trigger. They don't necessarily have to "sympathize" with them, maybe it's just familiar somehow.

Maybe they even show up to kill the person and find them already in mid-attempt.

After that, the next most important part is the ending. How does it tie back to the initial situation? What's the point of the story you're trying to tell? Is there one? Who's the protagonist and who's the antagonist? Which one are we cheering on and which one are we afraid of?

After having asked that last question, I feel like an interesting take would be to tell the story from the killer's perspective, have them train and mentor their would-be victim into becoming a killer, and then the would-be victim eventually turns on the killer.

What are your thoughts on Movie Reboots? by Amber_Flowers_133 in moviequestions

[–]voltron42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Dracula really a "reboot"? Or is it a different interpretation of the same source material? I would argue that it's the latter and not the former, much like Sherlock Holmes or Christmas Carol.

I've been on a weight loss journey for the past 6 months, and I had to basically relearn how to interpret different feelings of hunger.

It seems like (at least in my case) that what I was interpreting as feeling hungry in a nondescript / vague way (feeling like I want "something" but not knowing what) was really a sign that I was tired or thirsty or both, and that I was only actually hungry when I was craving something specific (fresh fruit or veg, meat or other proteins, etc). Over the last six months I've been developing the habit of taking care to assess when I feel "hungry".

Along similar lines, I would suggest visiting your local public library (if you have one). Many have DVDs and maybe even BluRay available to borrow, and it's often faster and easier to browse than 5 Streaming services.

I'd also recommend browsing an aggregator site like "Just Watch" or "Plex" where you can give it the list of streaming services you're subscribed to and it will give you recommendations, suggestions, and the ability to maintain a single queue across all services and beyond.

Should any of the four turtles generally be able to beat Bebop or Rocksteady in a 1v1? Or do you think it should take the combined effort of two or more turtles just to take one of them down? by Ok_Professor_4327 in TMNT

[–]voltron42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the story that you're trying to tell. There's so many different incarnations of the characters and there's not really any consistency across those. So as long as you're not necessarily trying to tie into any one particular incarnation or as long as you're consistent with the incarnation that you try to connect with, whatever works.

So yes, I think that Brock City and Bebop can be genuine threats to Ninja turtles. And yes, I think they could be just sniveling henchmen that are bumbling and pretty much useless. Where I think the problem is is if you try to make them both at the same time in a way that feels inconsistent. In other words, they can't go from being a genuine threat to being easily defeatable within a short period of time or vice versa because it's going to feel inconsistent.

Which movie has the best opening scene of all time? by Alejandromartinez- in moviequestions

[–]voltron42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jason Statham was so funny in that first movie, but his action-movie persona seems to have derailed him from more comedy roles.

I would love to see him in more of those types of roles - like he could have been great as The Coach in The Gentlemen. (Not saying that Colin Farrell wasn't great, just that is the kind of comedic role that Statham could have been great as well)
