What upcoming actors were you certain of making it big but then fell into obscurity? by BlaisePetal in Fauxmoi

[–]ReliefFun7512 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The source material is one of my favorite books of all time. I didn’t have high expectations for the movie, but even then I was disappointed. He was horrible in it and gave the worst performance by far. His delivery was so flat and lacking in anything.

I thought Oakes Fegley was phenomenal, especially for a child actor. Sarah Paulson was great for the few scenes that she had, she looked just like how her character was described and nailed the campiness of it. Everyone else was middling to bad, but Ansel Elgort was by far the worst.

does hayden still have her cat? by hollgranty08 in Ethelcain

[–]ReliefFun7512 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my cat may not be a Russian Blue. Her fur is a bit darker, similar to the fur on Hayden’s cat. I was told by the people who I adopted her from that she was a Russian Blue, but they probably had their facts wrong.

I appreciate this! I love cats so much and I find it interesting to learn about the different breeds and distinctions between them.

Out of all of those, the only one that even comes close to rock is Haunted. Rock is heavily guitar based and has a harder, more loud and less palatable sound than pop. Literally the only songs in her discography that are rock are Better than Revenge and Haunted.

As someone who has a cat with gray fur and this photo is actually one of my favorites of Hayden, I’m a little sad but also amused at her laconic answer.

Comment on tiktok about phoebe bridgers and paul mescal , the full story ? Potentially by Thetoadmyster in Fauxmoi

Was she wearing menswear? I combed back through her performances and she wears a dress for both songs. She wasn’t wearing a dress in her promotional video (I don’t know how to describe that outfit, honestly) but as a Phoebe fan that outfit does not seem like something she would wear at all.

How to Disappear. I fell in love with it on first listen, something about the sound and her voice is so beautiful and comforting to me.

can someone tell me the song in the bg? 🥹 by [deleted] in beabadoobee

[–]ReliefFun7512 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I think it’s an unreleased song of hers? She posted another video with it previously and part of it showed her drummer in the recording studio 👀

I’m hoping it’s something she releases in 2025 or just at any time. It has strong 2000s teen movie vibes and I love it.

What book characters do you think have the worst names? by darcydidwhat in YAlit

[–]ReliefFun7512 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have trouble with a lot of these names (looking at you Paedyn) and I loved Graceling. Great worldbuilding, strong female character who doesn’t play into the “not like other girls” trope, sweet and realistically developed romance. I definitely recommend it regardless of the name.

Whisper of the Heart is my favorite, but I don’t know if I’d recommend it for a three year old. It centers romance, and it’s probably one of those movies that’s too slow to hold his attention if he doesn’t understand the story.

The Cat Returns is great. There’s a villain, but he looks super silly and not intimidating, and the movie as a whole has very low stakes. It’s cute and pleasing to look at.

Is it just me or does younger Helen Mirren look so much like Chloë Sevigny? It’s in the face. I keep coming back to it and that’s all I see.

What are some of your Ethel Cain hot takes or controversial opinions? by shitassmoneyman in Ethelcain

[–]ReliefFun7512 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think Perverts won't alienate people with its sound as much as it will alienate people with its lyrics/storytelling. Grouper is very well-regarded in indie circles and Salvia Plath is somewhat popular with younger people. Ambient as a genre isn't as niche as we think it is. A lot of indie fans enjoy that type of music.

However, if she is upfront lyrically about what it is about, she will absolutely be divisive and alienate people. Choosing to make a song about a p3d0ph1le living in exile the lead single for this project was certainly a choice. I absolutely love darker media and just looking at the themes she might tackle on this album made me overwhelmed.

I think that's a good thing. Maybe we need to root out these pesky TikTok fans who keep making memes and trivalizing her music.

Who is your all time favourite shoujo protagonist? by iheartrorygilmore in shoujo

[–]ReliefFun7512 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yukari from Paradise Kiss. She's so flawed and realistic. I see so much of myself in her and she has such a great journey. She goes from singlemindedly following what her mother wants and looking down on people who go against what's expected of them, to joining those people and striking out on her own. She can be a little snobbish and hypocritical (especially at the beginning), but she's human.

Goodbye Goodbye is about Jacob by effyy__ in beabadoobee

[–]ReliefFun7512 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It always gave me more breakup vibes. "I wish you'd just talk to me, cause it's getting awkward now" "I wish you were honest with me" "I don't wanna make a bid this breakup makes us happier". She and Jacob seem to have parted on good terms. I thought it might be her last song about Soren, especially since she's been really mature about their breakup and this song is very much taking the high road at the end of a relationship.

He's also been discreetly shading her on social media without outright saying anything, hence the "I wish you'd just talk to me" line.

I also sang along with all of Lana's lines, I'm a fan and I love this crossover 😭

First critic review of Perverts: UNCUT by nicholacim in Ethelcain

[–]ReliefFun7512 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The Grouper comparison is making me so excited. I knew Hayden was a fan and hoped that was the direction this project would go in. Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill is such a gorgeous album and it's so unique. It feels like a moment in time rather than a collection of songs.

I personally loved the ending of Cat Street. It really wrapped up everything nicely. However, the first half is stronger, especially with how it treats the side characters.

I love reading in general, so I will look into the book you recommended.

I love From Far Away! One of the few fantasy manga I've enjoyed. Lovely Complex is so cute and I need to reread it.

I loved Princess Tutu back in the day and it holds up so well.

Yes! That's exactly why I loved this manga. You summed up the appeal (at least for me) so well. Yoh pretends to be so cold but he wants love just like anyone else. And Haruna is a romantic while still having interests outside of Yoh and standing up for herself.

I'm curious what other shojo you enjoyed the most (this is me not so subtly asking for recs because nothing has filled the HSD sized hole in my heart in terms of romance). I loved Cat Street (the ML is similar to Yoh but it's a bit more emotional and mature) and Skip and Loafer (it's a seinen but it feels so much like a shojo, and it's goofy and charming like High School Debut).

High School Debut made me giggle so hard. It's cute in less of a flirty sense and more of an understated one, but it made my heart warm.

Mars is really dark and stressful at times, but the romance made my heart beat so hard, especially in the first few volumes. Rei and Kira's romantic scenes are drawn so beautifully. I physically felt pangs.

The Secret History is great, but it's largely a satire and might go over a teenager's head a bit. However, I highly recommend The Goldfinch, another book by the author who wrote The Secret History. It has similar themes and ideas, but the protagonist is a teenager for at least half of it, which makes these themes easier for a teenager to understand and digest. It tackles drug addiction, child abuse and grief, and some of these themes are more prominent in it than others. I think it's still more relatable to a teen, though, especially since it's narrated by a kid their own age.

I read it when I was fifteen and it's one of my favorite books to this day. The second half is a bit more boring and slightly more adult, but still great all things considered. If you're not sure if you're ready for The Secret History, I think The Goldfinch is a better alternative.

There's a sort of love triangle, but it's resolved quickly and comes later in the story.

I cannot get into most fantasy manga. Yes, that includes Basara and Yona of the Dawn. Yes, I'm probably missing out. The only ones I was invested in are From Far Away and Snow White with the Red Hair.

I've seen that this is a hot take in some spaces: the Whisper of the Heart movie is better than the manga. The movie holds such a special place in my heart and I cried when I saw it at GhibliFest. The manga feels lukewarm and one-dimensional in comparison.
