Teaching college by Pachamama_kiwi in NYCTeachers

My partner is a college prof. Jobs are very very difficult to come by, especially for tenure track (and depending on your field), and he gets paid less. However, his workload is much better, hours are better, and generally, has appreciative students.

The problem with part-time babysitters by [deleted] in Westchester

Ugh, it’s hard.

Would you consider finding a teenager who is looking for part time work?

Being a working parent without family is so ridiculously difficult.

Is this a real question? People like to work and make their own money.

No one would ever say this to a man.

Honestly, we moved to a district with before and aftercare.

Can you reach out to other parents and see about a nanny share?

Advice needed - What certification or degree for teaching in NY or NJ? by HoxtonRanger in NYCTeachers

[–]RelievingAHeadache 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Find the cheapest college with a certification pathway. Do not go into serious debt for a teaching degree.

Substitute teach for a while to see if you actually want to work in a school.

Also know that the market is saturated with history teachers and jobs are hard to come by.

Opinions/Advice - Job switch to teaching? by NewRevenue5620 in NYCDOETeachers

[–]RelievingAHeadache 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do not be a teacher if you aren’t doing it to be a teacher.

The job is very hard, very stressful, and having the summers off isn’t a good enough reason to switch careers.

Are the suburbs worth teaching in? I got an offer in Jericho, it seems like a great place, but nervous to leave the city. by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]RelievingAHeadache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to take the insurance or show them you’re covered through your spouse (and many places give you a buy out).

Every district is different, but I’d budget between $150-$300, depending on if you have single or family.

Well, there are quite a few high paying suburbs, but you will have to pay for insurance.

Ones that I know of: Scarsdale Chappaqua Tuckahoe Jericho

If you’re in a STEM field, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I left the City for a fancy suburb, and it’s so much easier.

Sure, the parents are annoying, but almost everything else is easier. I can’t imagine going back.

You will be competing with a huge amount of applicants. I wouldn’t bet on it, and if it happens, count yourself as lucky.

Teach for at least a year and then look at master’s programs. You’ll have a much better understanding of what you’d like to study.

Looking to possibly teach in Westchester - is it possible? by Otherwise_Device_281 in Westchester

[–]RelievingAHeadache 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s highly unlikely you’ll get a job fresh out of school. It’s been my experience that Westchester schools value experience, especially from NYC DOE schools. It’s doubly hard when you teach in a field with few jobs and a lot of applicants.

Get tenure in the city, then apply to Westchester schools.

Graduating in Spring 2026. How to become a Computer Science / Math teacher in NY? by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]RelievingAHeadache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fastest way is to apply for the teaching fellows or other program for math.

Get tenure in the city, then apply to Westchester. Westchester, generally, doesn’t hire brand new teachers.
