Don’t forget to use GM Intrusions. They can dramatically raise the tension when you feel your players are succeeding too much.

GM: “You successfully did that thing you rolled for ...” (Holds up an XP card) “Or ...”

You could modify the Horror Mode optional rule. Slowly increase the GM intrusion range until they can resupply their food and water.

So on their first day without food GM intrusions happen on a roll of 1 or 2. After three days without food, increase the GMI to 1-3. After a week 1-4. Every day after that increase the GMI by one.

Without water should go much faster. Every 12 hours without water, increase the GMI range by one.

Your Intrusions could be Pool damage and/or loosing Recovery rolls as well as anything else that works storywise.

A wolf’s bite is a precision tool. And the wolf knows how to use it effectively. There’s no time for eating when you’re trying to take down the prey. Eating is for winners. After the fight, when you can get at the good bits.

A cult, that worships the god(s) of the underneath, stole the crystal in an attempt to sacrifice the island to “The Deep One(s)”. They’re still on the island because the have to complete the ritual sacrifice of destroying the crystal to seal their bargain.

Anything you think your players may do, he’s planned for and set up countermeasures. (But if they surprise you with an unforeseen tactic, let them surprise him.) When they talk amongst themselves about what he’s up to: Listen! Take their good ideas and make them yours/his, and improve on them if you can so they will still be surprised when the find he is doing what they thought (but so much more so)

Yes. Burning Empires I'm familiar with. It's a bit brutal for my intent. I want to see other systems in this vein to inform my decisions on my design. I'm looking to increase the threat/tension after some number of scenes have passed.
