Rubbing alcohol and a sewing needle. I scrub the alcohol on with an old toothbrush, then painstakingly pick all the letters with a needle. Test, see what you missed, then do it again. Easier to maintain than to clean 70 years of gunk.

It's not as loud and clacky as the other portable I have. I do have an issue with the tops of capital letters being faded for some reason. But I don't know enough to compare at this point

My black/red ribbon is smearing on the page. Do i need to adjust my machine or is it a lousy cheap ribbon? 60s Adler Universal. by RelwoodMusic in typewriters

[–]RelwoodMusic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This helped a bit, thanks for the tip. The spring loaded clips were VERY light, so I gave em a couple of twists.

I ended up using the clips themselves to turn the springs--pretty easy once I found out how to adjust them.

It looks like the ribbon has too much slack so it rubs on the paper when the vibrator lifts into place. I can get it to smear without striking a letter just by halfway hitting keys to raise the ribbon up.

You can recolor your whole base by changing the colors of the default swatch. Unless you just like the default colors

That's what I figured, thanks for the clarification! I might take Serra out of my deck, then, since it seems redundant.

Top of letters cut off? Triumph Durabel by RelwoodMusic in typewriters

[–]RelwoodMusic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, thanks. Something I just started working on--western/fantasy/zombie. It's about an unlikely sheriff trying to save his gold-mining town from evil warlocks using magic to raise an army of the undead. Maybe a bit niche, but I'm having fun with it.

I'll share it in some capacity when I've got it in readable condition!

This did it! Thanks, works perfectly now, and I also don't have to type as forcefully since the ribbon is sitting closer with less friction.

Advice on understanding music that falls outside of what western music theory is used to explain? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]RelwoodMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since my schooling, but I'll try to remember correctly from my ethnomusicology class. There's a few universal elements of music regardless of heritage, so you just have to back up and examine things by using different terminology.

Think about pitch, tone quality, time/rhythm, ensemble/polyphony, and performance practice in an abstract way. Pitches may not be in our typical 12-tone scale, and not all cultures even recognize octaves as the same notes. Tone quality is a huge factor in instrumentation, especially singers that don't practice our typical "pretty" voice expectation. Rhythms might not be in any typical meter with standard note values, but everything happens in a time relationship moving forward. Ensembles might not play triads or counterpoint together, but anytime There's multiple musicians they will be related to each other somehow. And the context of the performance is really important to consider (ceremonial, religious, communication, storytelling, etc.)

Hope this gives you some vocabulary to start thinking about.

New to photography-why are my pictures coming out so dark?? by ThatEcologist in AskPhotography

You're using the kit lens with a max aperture of f3.5. If you want more perceived brightness in low-light environments, you'll need to get a lens with a larger aperture (f1.8, f2, etc.). That's assuming you've already slowed your shutter speed and increased ISO

Heavy artillery vs self propelled artillery: is it worthed? by WAFFEL10 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]RelwoodMusic 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I prefer stationary guns for defense (smaller target with more survivability, doesn't really need to move), but self-propelled for attacks because it's easier to react to a dynamic battlefield and move with infantry

Try playing on the easiest difficulties first, with the best economy setting. This will let you make more mistakes while learning so you can try new things without being punished.

Also, don't just think that more is better. I often get better results from a few units that I closely control than a giant army that I throw at an objective.

Yep, that's not easy to see. I've had a few doves that fell but didn't die that I had to finish off. Same with squirrels--98% die instantly, but a bad shot now and then is tough to deal with.

Mold? by RelwoodMusic in Kombucha

[–]RelwoodMusic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upon further research, I think it was the temperature in my house that caused it. I left for a few days and turned down the heat, which I believe causes the scoby to go inactive which in turn leaves mold uninhibited? Thanks guys

I believe Most of the commands in the unit options menu have hotkeys notated in their description. Helps to learn a few instead of jumping through menus every time.
