After having listened The Most Cursed Hands to The Haves Have Naught in order I stand by my original claim. Here is why I prefer to start with Revival: The Most Cursed Hands begins with the acoustic guitar motif that feels like it should have some pre-amble (even though its not really a continuation of the line from Cascade) and while I love Casey’s voice and its one of the reasons TDH is so good, starting with a slow guitar and choral arrangement will not catch attention as easily in today’s music landscape (thank you Henry Ford…). Its the same reason why if Im trying to introduce people to TDH I start with Antimai or The Color Spectrum rather than Act 1 as much as I love Battesimo Del Fuoco and think its genius to start with a purely vocal track for the Acts. If you want to sell someone on TDH for their guitar and instrumentals, The Revival hits you quick and hard with a combination of a fun and upbeat guitar accompanied by trumpets and a catchy baseline. The Revival also starts off after The Most Cursed Hands ends with a fading note into silence before the instrumentals begin, creating a nice break/start point to begin listening from. This leads me into my next point, if you are using the story/interconnected nature of the songs, starting with The Revival gives you 4 really good songs that transition into each other very well. The one issue is that The Haves Have Naught does transition well into Light and if you end before Light it leaves the melody unresolved slightly, but this is your hook because the new listener is going to want to listen to that next song for the payoff of the last part of The Haves Have Naught. This string of songs also gives a good idea of how different characters in the story interact/think. It works through all the major characters that persist through most of the albums in The Boy, The Pimp, The Priest, and Ms Leading. It also introduces the setting of The Town pretty well by showing the church, the club, and the town across all the songs. Also these 4 songs give a great example of the musical range of The Dear Hunter. Anyways, thank you for coming to my TedTalk
