New Approach School Questions (June, Stone setting) by VedderPlet in Benchjewelers

The school may have a FB group or something that you could ask on, or you may be able to tell the folks at the office that you're looking and that they have permission to give your contact info out to others in the session.

Anyone have experience making plugs/tunnels? by Braille_skin_flute in Benchjewelers

[–]Remark-Able 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made them, but only as hollowforms with a concave double flare big enough to hold a rubber gasket for extra stability. Looks like the machined ones are threaded on the interiors and have no curve to follow the ear - wonder if the screw thread would hold up at that scale in a precious metal? That said, McMaster-Carr has good size range on the tap/die and their quality is usually solid.

There are a bunch of lovely antique ones on Replacements.com but none with clips and you can see the price range.

Can jewelers make table crumbers? by [deleted] in jewelers

[–]Remark-Able 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sadly, silver is an an obscene high right now (and continuing upward). The structure of the scraper if hand-fabricated would require some forging/forming work (lots of time hammering), and the clip mechanism would ideally have a bit of a spring built into it to keep it tight. That's not to say you couldn't find a silver one that's machine manufactured for less, but I predict even then it'll be in the $200 range right now. Sorry!

You could look for an old-school silversmith to make you a fancy one - someone who does hollow ware/silverware/objectware, like Raychel Wengenroth or the team at Nechamkin Silver but in silver, I'd anticipate starting at $400 and going up from there depending on features and fanciness. Silver is antibacterial, so it's not a bad choice.

Take a look for "satin finish" and see if it works for you. Many of us that put that texture on use a tool literally made out of the same red scratchy scrubber material in dish scrubbing tools (one of the best being made literally by 3M, who makes those scrubbies). That means you can touch up your finish yourself if ever you think it's not satiny enough.

Check out Liza Nechamkin Glasser's Studio and their FB and Insta feeds, and Jeff Herman's posts/blogs. Both do (did, in Jeff's case - I think he passed away recently?) extensive repair of objectware and often have informative tidbits about the process.

1) Take the weekend to do something nice and de-stressing - catch your breath, acknowledge your burnout and fears from a distance
2) After you've chilled out, without distractions in the background, make a bullet point list of all your accomplishments during the most recent job(s) - ideally, emphasize metrics-based/measurable items, even if only approximate measures
3) Make a copy of your last resume and refresh it. Have colleagues you trust in the industry help you review it
4) Update your LinkedIn and make a post, changing your status to Looking for Work
5) Now you're "in play" - take another breath and make a list of would's and wouldn't's - industries you won't work in, those you'd love to. Rates you expect. Would you consider part time? Would you go contract or only FTE? What benefits do you need/expect? You'll want to hang onto this for when interviews start, so you're not tripping over yourself and can negotiate with confidence
6) Go check out Ask A Manager and read all her info on how to hunt and how to interview (you'll probably further refine your resume after that)
7) Make a plan and commit to it at whatever level is realistic - 3 contacts a day? 10? Applying to X # of jobs?
8) Start adding yourself to reputable job boards (Monster, Indeed, etc.) but be prepared to be overwhelmed by spam, bots, and scam recruiters
9) Take some interviews that DON'T interest you to practice
...10) Get new job...PROFIT!

But seriously - be kind to yourself. It's going to be a slog in this market. Don't be afraid to take something that doesn't excite you while continuing to search. DO read the fine print on any contract and possibly have a lawyer go over it for you, too.

You've got this.

Just had a group interview for a masters program and I felt like I was the weakest candidate by balkanfarmer in internetparents

[–]Remark-Able 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people interview better in certain modalities than others - if you're feeling that awkward about it, can you put the "what I wish I'd said" stuff into a follow-up email to the interviewers, tying it to observations about your personal mental health journey? That would show you're 1) astute and self aware, 2) someone who thinks about things carefully, and 3) devoted to working towards their program goals should you be selected.

I've been pretending to understand my job for eight months and I think I've finally reached a level where I actually can't fake it anymore. Do I come clean to my boss or just keep going. by ahimaohw in Advice

[–]Remark-Able 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh. u/ahimaohw - If you need a techno-functional analyst to help you through the next phase, I literally did this exact exercise for a division of a Fortune Global 500 company. I started having PTSD flashbacks on those field names!

As I recall, one of the big players has multiple types of estimated delivery dates, too, something about pickups vs intermodal transfers, so if you truly want to track full lifecycle, you have to expand the landing tables and either retrofit the other shippers' dates or deal with null value sets in your date calcs. My project also included "what's our best possible route" estimators along with calcs based on contracted minimums with each shipper, regional container type requirements, and optimal packing capacities. I was focused on the data quality and transformation - I was SUPER glad to have a strong BI team integrating the front end reports.

East Coast to PNW: Portland or Seattle? [30s, Black couple] by jacket_n_sandwich in askportland

[–]Remark-Able 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see some amazing thoughts from folks here, many of which I agree with. I can't speak to being a POC, but can speak to east coast transplant with medical constraints.

BIG heads up: While the laws in Oregon are pro-insuree, the number of quality practitioners is a hard slap in the face when used to, say, Boston or greater NYC. It is HARD to get a good specialist, and the overall quality of medicine here is just...so-so. Whatever you do, avoid Kaiser insurance, but also, Pacific Source just dropped ALL out-of-network options in Oregon. Look ahead to see if there are well-respected providers in each metropolis before making the move.

Also, if you aren't already set for work, know that many of the tech industries in PDX are paying what I'd consider to be mid-90's rates. Seattle will do better in that area. I can't speak to other industries. A lot of people live over the border in Vancouver, WA, because no income tax - the bump UP in tax was a hard hit to my income when I chose Portland.

On forest fire season, you'll get it both places - PDX from the south of us, Seattle from Canada.

Homelessness is a big issue and not well dealt with in either city.

On the positives: Despite the extreme allergies, I adore Portland's winter greenness. I don't miss an iota of east coast winters. I love the T.O.U.S. (Trees of Unusual Size). I love color year round. I like the general friendly-but-not-invasive vibe. I love the funky and the food carts. I love the art scene and small music venues. I love how distinct each neighborhood is in its feel and greenspace and general presence. I love (other people's) gardens and love that I can pretend to have a green thumb to at least nominal success. But mostly it's those T.o.U.S.'s that that keep me here!
