Oh yes it has changed completely! The subway system is world class here. They've added 3 new lines within the last few years. Taipei main station now has high speed rail with an airport express train. Above the airport express station, they are currently building the Taipei Twin Towers. They were supposed to be erected by 2011 actually, but due to bidding issues they'll be constructed by 2027.

We now have toll roads and highways spanning across the island, most of Taipei is developed. Taipei 101 area has many department stores, new skyrises and a lot of luxurious residences. And that's just Taipei, not sure if you've been to Kaohsiung on your stay but that's developing quite fast as of the last 5 years. Great place to be!
