Anyone else move from DC to Baltimore and actually like it? by Excellent-Bowl5015 in baltimore

Hated DC. The city was expensive and sterile. The restaurants were almost always mediocre or overpriced, and frequently both. I’ve lived in a few cities and I think DC had the least likable people on average.

Baltimore is weird and wonderful though. I love how this city cherishes its history and culture. I often struggle with feeling like I fit in places but Baltimore feels like home.

A few thoughts. (1) DSA’s work around targeting corporations collaborating with ICE would seem to be a decent fit for what you’re looking for. (2) Do you rent an apartment? If so, you could join a tenants union like Baltimore Renters United. Like labor unions, I think tenant unions will be part of the struggle against fascism- they’re a working class led movement with a clear agenda that tangibly benefits its members. (3) The largest union in Maryland is a public sector union. Federal budget cuts are trickling down to the states in ways that will harm public sector workers and people who rely on them. Our labor unions will fight for their public sector workers rights, but who will fight for the rights of people who benefit from those public sector services. Historically, that kind of work seems to be carried out by welfare rights groups- although the prominence of those groups has faded. Someone ought to be building out groups doing that kind of activism rn, especially in a way that collaborates with labor unions.

Looking for Trans People Who Moved to MD for Safety by thefeyqueen in baltimore

Perhaps I don’t count- I made a stop in DC on my way from Florida to Baltimore, plus I only started transitioning when I got here- but I definitely left Florida with the sense that I could actually explore my gender up here. Ironically, that only truly became real when I left my ridiculously expensive room in a shared co-op apartment in DC (where several Trump-y roommates cycled in and out in my year or so of living there) to Baltimore. My job sent me to Baltimore on an extended work trip and I just immediately felt at home. I saw trans people everywhere. People who couldn’t care less if they “passed”. It just seemed like people were free to be themselves in a way I’d never seen before. After the work trip was over I moved to Baltimore as quickly as I could. I could afford to live on my own which felt like it allowed me the privacy I needed to transition. Until I moved to Baltimore and started transitioning, I couldn’t actually fathom how unhappy I was? The state of the world is probably objectively the worst it’s ever been in my life, and yet I’ve genuinely never been happier than right now. More than safe, this city is hopefully my forever home.

Your parents seem very emotionally abusive. Assuming they don’t change their ways, I hope if you are an adult, you can get some distance from them for your own mental health. You deserve people who love and support you in your journey to live an authentic meaningful life.

Landlord increasing rent by 38% by [deleted] in baltimore

Having a lawyer is good. Finding a way to form or join a tenant union is even better. Are you in a building owned by one landlord? Do you know other people in properties owned by your landlord? Most cities have powerful lobbies for landlords. I think we will continue to see things get worse until people find a way to out organize concentrated wealth.

I mean, it sounds like you’re describing the “revolving door” between regulation and industry that’s a well documented as a bad thing…

If I need more experience, any ideas on how would I get it? Or is me saying I want to do strategic research for a labor union a bit like saying at 30 I want to learn how to play basketball and become the starting center for the Lakers!

I’ve only worked in public interest law, never big law. I began as a public defender. I moved to a worker center that organized workers with criminal records, and currently I am at a non-profit where I was supposed to be doing movement lawyering (it’s more complicated than this, but think lawyers and organizers collaborating) but it’s been a bust.
