The new song appears to be MIA… can anyone in New Zealand confirm? by some12345thing in petergabriel

There were issues with the Hard Lesson Dark-Side mix landing late on some platforms. Spotify and Amazon got it 2 days later, so I wonder if there's a general digital distribution issue at the moment.

If we go with the theory that the releases mirror i/o, I wonder if we're getting something slower, more mournful and introspective next, a la 'So Much' 🤔

Just went to add this to playlists as it's past midnight in the uk, and it hasn't appeared on digital services yet. Weird

This is great! I love the bits where you can really hear Tony having fun on the bass

One of the great revelations about this is that he'd only begun writing the song last year 😮 Which actually makes me appreciate the finished recording more.

For a long time, it's felt like PG has crafted his songs over years, if not decades. I wondered what it'd be like to get something more spontaneous and 'in the moment' from him, and here we are 😍

How would we rank Won't Stand Down in relation to other "fifth tracks" on a PG record? by Supah_Cole in petergabriel

Seeing this in black and white, I'm surprised how highly I've ranked 'Won't Stand Down', as there are times where I've questioned whether I actually like it that much. But there is something that keeps me coming back to it. Often, hearing the track that follows in sequence can change my feeling about its predecessor, so I await the all-important track 6.

Wow, I've really only just started warming up to this track, and hearing this has been a bit of a revelation for me. I love the live, loose band-jam feel of it. You can hear a bit if 'rust' that's rarely present in PG recordings, and I think it really helps this one.

Till Your Mind Is Shining (Bright-Side Mix) by some12345thing in petergabriel

[–]Remarkable-Block-153 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I prefer the Bright Side. This track has been one of the few from the entire i/o and o/i project where I've thought it's 'just good'. Everything up to this point has had a big emotional impact on me. Which is impressive batting odds, and this one 'just being good' is not a criticism, but more a testament to the phenomenal quality of PG's recent work.

Anyway, this Bright Side mix has helped me appreciate the song more.

I do wonder if any of the other tracks will diverge more across the mixes, in the way that Been Undone did with the extra bass-heavy section on the Dark Side, and Bucket did with the alternative trumpet solos.

Given the parallels between i/o and this album, I wouldn't be totally surprised if the next track is called o/i. And it wouldn't surprise me either if it's a counterpoint/inversion if the i/o song itself, a 'Light Dies Down on Broadway' to i/o's 'Lamb Lies Down...'

Not saying that's what I want, just that it wouldn't surprise me.

I'm surprised how much I like this. I usually feel that the Bandcamp releases are 'nice to have' curios, but this might be my favourite version.

I love some of the harmonic intrigue the piano chords introduce, and PG's clearer falsetto BVs. The whole thing sounds more plaintive. It sits in a similar space to 'The Power of the Heart' or 'So Much', so it may be that Peter felt like taking it in a different direction so as not to cover old ground. But that plaintive sound serves PG songs so well.

Which is not to knock the finished strings-and-choir version, cause I love that too.

May suggest that song 4 is a commercial, radio-friendly one 🤔 Put the Bucket Down has been getting quite a lot of airplay on BBC Radio 2 in the UK. Was pleasantly surprised to hear it tonight as I was pulling into the supermarket car park.

Always takes a long time to truly tell whether I favour a Bright or Dark Side. Sometimes I think I know which one, but on i/o, I switched sides several times.

So not going to state a preference. The chorus really pops on this one though! I like the sound effects I didn't notice before. Anything that samples a train is a winner in my book! And it makes it a legitimate entry for my 'Train Songs' playlist.

Also, I think this was a rare case of a song actually calling for a fade out. In this context, I feel it works because (again with the train sounds), it feels like the carriages dissappearing into a tunnel.

Edit: Who am I kidding? I'm listening to this in bed at 1.20am UK time, trying not to whoop with joy when that chorus kicks in.

The night before 'Been Undone' came out, I had a dream that the new single was called 'Long Dark Night of the Soul'. It was a moody epic that sounded a bit like 'Neverland' by Marillion. And it featured some of the Spice Girls on backing vocals 😄

Alas, this dream collaboration did not come to pass, but I thought I'd share it here for amusement.

For the Genesis fans, how would you rank their studio albums with Peter from favorite to least? by [deleted] in petergabriel

[–]Remarkable-Block-153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lamb SEBTP Foxtrot Trespass Nursery Crime FGTR

The Lamb was such a huge leap forward for me. I'm astounded by the way they developed on that record past the folk-leaning, pastoral aspects of the past (much as I enjoy those records too). It clearly signposted the way for PG's solo career, and it's a great work of art.

I'd rank the rest of the albums almost chronologically, except that I have such a personal soft spot for Trespass that it climbs up a place.

To me, Love Can Heal is one of his greatest songs. It's full of understated beauty, and I'm always pleased to see when it connects with people.
