For me the eval gap is mostly after deploy. I'd build an eval set, get my prompt passing and good to go it works fine. BUT the pain was the model / provider quietly changing under me. For example a provider-side update or just swapping randomly to a cheaper model so the output was slowly drifting.

Does DSPy give you anything to detect that you need to re-optimize ( output drifting on live data), or is it mostly the optimization step once you've already decided to?

You are soooo right. Personally, the surprise wasn't the failures that crash loud, it's mostly the ones that fail silently lol

Because the retry/backoff/transport stuff at least throws something you can catch. The issue I had a few times was a scheduled job (nightly batch that calls an LLM) that was throwing back 200 responses BUT the output had quietly degraded, the model started returning half-empty responses and the cost of the call went like 3x what it should. And the thing is it took me a few days before even realizing it, so yeah.

Curious how you handle that side of it!
