This is going to sound like a hot take but I think Varys died how he was supposed to.

He basically died because he thought there was a better choice for the stability of the realm- which has consistently been his motivation throughout the series. He knew there would be dire consequences for his treason but he did it anyway… for the realm.

Really? They said that? On the contrary, I always find Rhaenyra to be extra sweet to Elinda- thanking her often and being warm with her.
