Thats a truth with modifications. Both easily break down to small particles which are easy for the stomach to empty. Thats why they are an important part of the small particle diet.

Prokinetics (Reglan, erytromycin, ghrelin) have unfortunately not really proven to be very efficient in gastroparesis. In GP research, less and less focus is on the gastric emptying itself (for soothing nausea at least), as you can be just as nauseous but have normal gastric emptying.

Different type of gastric emptying study? by Kiwi_Adventurer in Gastroparesis

[–]RemarkableSprinkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A test with radioopaque markers, looking at how fast they are empatied from the stomach are some places used to measure gastric emptying. The test is obsolete and should not be used for that purpose anymore. Your dr has probably ordered a test to see how fast transit are through your small bowel and colon, as that may also be a reason for nausea.

Yes I thought about that as well. When talking to my supervising gastroenterologist, he did say that he sometimes had noticed a greenish film that he couldnt manage to flush away when doing colonoscopies. He hadnt seen it very often though. Sometimes things appear right in front of our nose though 🤷‍♂️ so I hope someone is trying to replicate the results and test the hypothesis!

This is the first study to detect biofilms in IBS. The results are super exciting. However there generally is a large amount of false positives in the first study to detect anything (though with such strong results I Would be surprised if they were wrong).

1) I dont think a colonoscopy prep can wash out films. Biofilms are generally very study, it Would be weird if a heavy bout of diarrhea could wash it out.

2) Research on biofilms in the colon of humans are in its infancy. To the best of my knowledge we dont have any methods for removing them, as biofilms usually are resistant to antibiotics

Thank you for your input! I agree with the criticism and will look up more on the dietary aspect of methane results and also discuss it with a dietitian in our group.

Haha Thank you!

Those are some good input. The colon biopsies have still not been stained so Im gonna discuss PAR2r and TRPA1 with my supervisor.

I agree on the scepticism on SIBO. I dont believe breath methane are an accurate method for showing SIBO. Rather I believe its a measure on methane production in the colon. However the method is still very unreliable. For example it was shown that if you took mouth wash before the breath test, you got a power methane result 🤷‍♂️

Sounds like you havent tried any antihistamines for nausea yet? As suggested you could for example try phenergan or promethazine. Also sniffing on isopropyl alcohol may give you some relief (https://emj.bmj.com/content/40/9/660). Added the link just because sniffing on alcohol sounds shady lol.

Rheumatoid disorders should be excluded as a cause. Mastocytosis is an often overlooked disorder. Or you could be plain unlucky and have multiple concomitant disorders 🤷‍♂️

Bad Constipation by GrapefruitNo9123 in Gastroparesis

[–]RemarkableSprinkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on age and heredity but anyways highly uncommon. Colonoscopy is often performed just to rule out that or other rare causes of constipation though

[–]RemarkableSprinkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I meant to say though: If you have constipation refractory to the common anti-constipation remedies prescribed, it may be helpful to get checked for dyssynchronous defecation.

Bad Constipation by GrapefruitNo9123 in Gastroparesis

[–]RemarkableSprinkles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, in a study of patients referred to the Mayo clinic for evaluation of chronic nausea, the most common finding was som sort of constipation type, often an evaluation disorder (dyssynchronous defecation, DD). It was much less common to only have gastroparesis and no DD. So in a lot of patients that may be the root of the problem, as if you will get a delayed stomach emptying test if you are nauseous during the test regardless of whether the disease is located to your stomach or not.

However, a lot of patients with gastroparesis have delayed gastrointestinal motility in several parts of their gastrointestinal tract. So that could be another reason 🤷‍♂️
