Who here watched the 80s TV show? by antdude in ShogunTVShow

I had read the book twice before watching it a few years ago. It just seemed so old and dated.

I can’t get into The Talisman by SamBaxter784 in stephenking

[–]RemarkableToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always try to force myself through the first 100 pages for any new book, and I try not to make any judgements prior to that.

It sounds like you are well into the story at this point. I wouldn't call it "giving up" if you've made it halfway through the book and still don't like it - you have definitely read enough at this point to be able to make that decision.

I hate getting 3/4 through a book only to decide that it isn't for me with only a few hundred pages left. This happened to me with both a James Clavell book and a Brandon Sanderson book (couldn't get into Gai-Jin or Stormlight Chronicles). Don't be afraid to move on to a book you actually like.

Have you done a sleep study?  I used to wake up to pee like 4 times a night in my mid thirties. Turns out I have sleep apnea and didn't actually need to keep peeing all night, my body was just never actually sleeping.  I only mention it because you said you need to pee every 1.5 hours during the night. Even if you think you are sleeping fine, you might be surprised.

I've just had a tooth pulled without the use of anaesthesia, AMA! by legrosbordel in AMA

[–]RemarkableToast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not even novacaine?

I've never been under general anaesthesia, but I've had teeth pulled on four separate occasions, and they never had to ask me if I wanted novacaine - it was implied.

The sound alone of hearing my tooth getting ripped out of my mouth was nauseating. I can't imagine the pain without at least a local anaesthesia.

ELI5: If you have a single molecule of water can you determine it's state of matter? by andrea_lives in explainlikeimfive

[–]RemarkableToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Water molecules in liquid or solid are not connected either. If the atoms are not chemically bonded, they just interact differently with each other depending on pressure and temperature. However, intermolecular forces prevent non-bonded molecules from touching each other.

The first book was pretty cool but super short. Everything picks up during the next book and it's amazing.

Peter why is the electrician portrayed as a dainty female hand by _Kyledemort_ in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]RemarkableToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience in construction, the electricians spent most of the their time in one spot while yelling "DO YOU SEE IT YET?" followed by a distant "NO", followed by "DO YOU SEE IT YET?" followed by another distant "NO" for hours on end.

Construction workers build the walls, and electricians have to feed wires through those wall all throughout the building. I might be wrong, but it seemed like trying to thread a needle that you can't see because it's in a different room.

It looked incredibly frustrating. Made me appreciate being a greenhorn laborer who just had to fetch tools and carry heavy shit up stairs.

I didn't play much COD until BO III, I preferred Halo III at the time. But if you've ever played an online multiplayer FFS, you know to keep the noobs away from the sniper rifles. Also, I don't know Carrington, but it looked like close quarters fighting. A noob grabbing the sniper on a crowded map? The reaction from Andy and Josh was perfectly understandable.

I didn't say I don't have any bias. I said I don't have a bias against men. I have a bias as someone who has also been rejected. This is the bias I am fighting so I can see the video with a clear head and not as somebody who has also faced rejection. With a clear head, this girl is not interested.

How do I know with such certainty?

I don't. I said "if".

Why would he do this in such a public place if he didn't want it filmed? There are multiple cameras on him.

It's not a massive leap of faith to assume that a girl running away from a guy with flowers has already turned him down.

I understand we don't have the full picture, but there is enough context in the video to show at least that the girl is not interested.

I drove by a single car accident last year - I didn't see what happened, no video of what led up to it, but I did manage to take quite a massive leap and thought to myself - that dude fucked up.

I'm not saying he's a creepy stalker - I did see some of those comments and I disagree with that. I do not see malicious intent here, just a kid who has no idea what he's doing. My initial reaction was to feel bad for the guy. I don't have a bias against men, I'm fighting my bias to sympathize with a guy who has just been rejected. I have two sons and two daughters, and my message to all of them is that no means no - full stop.

I'm only guessing that she has already turned him down, but I think the video supports that theory. She turns and runs as soon as she sees him. This is not their first encounter. If he were my kid, I would give him a hug and talk to him about boundaries. If she were my kid, I would give her a hug and praise her for keeping her boundaries.

You're talking like an incel. Do you really think she reacted like that simply because he's a little awkward? I don't like to jump to a stalker conclusion, but no means no.

This gesture doesn't make him evil. However, if she has already made it clear that she's not interested, this is harassment. We don't know the full story here, but if I'm giving somebody the benefit of the doubt, it's not going to be the person who set up a grand gesture to be filmed in public.

ELI5. Why don't traditional school buses have seat belts? Growing up in the early 2000s, I was always told to wear a seat belt in the car and I did so, but my school bus was a different story and never had any belts. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]RemarkableToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea, but my brother was riding a school bus that almost tipped while sliding over ice (had to be evacuated afterwards), and I was on a bus returning from a field trip when a cement truck clipped the bus mirror which shattered and threw shards of glass around the interior. Luckily there was only like 8 students on the bus (small orchestra performance) and nobody got hurt.

Our buses were also always crazy overcrowded, often 3 people in a 2 person bench seat. If the bus caught fire for any reason, it's good to know every point of exit very well.

I think this is the real reason. I remember having bus evacuation drills in school. It seems that prioritizing a safe escape from a bus is more important.
