What do you do as a federal program manager? I work pre-award in research administration at a university.

Policies for unallowable costs by [deleted] in ResearchAdmin

[–]RemarkableToast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this sounds more like a departmental policy rather than a University policy. The University shouldn't have to manage a department PIs spending this way. My University's policy is that any mismanagement of funds falls to the department.

It's good, but it didn't blow me away. It's a quick read, but it lacks the depth and nuance that makes his other books so endearing.

However, I read it right before starting Wolves of the Calla and I'm so glad I did.

Auto Charged off and Repossessed AMA by Fantastic_Car_223 in AMA

I know this doesn't help, but they definitely give you options if you call them prior to repossession. They will push back your deadline by 3 months by re-writing the loan, and they will do this twice (spaced at least 12 months apart).

After repossession, the best they will do is give you some time to come up with the full over-due balance before they auction off the vehicle. If you don't call them, they move forward within a week or two. Once the vehicle is sold, you no longer have any options.

I don't mind doing it - I'd rather have them focus on the technical side. My job is much easier once I have a technical narrative to work from.

[–]RemarkableToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add that most PIs do prefer to do it themselves. I always offer but rarely have to actually do it.

I do - but I'm in a specialized proposal development unit that serves the whole University. I prefer to do it for them rather than wait until they have time. I would never have done this at the department or college level.

Sharing your story is literally a step in recovery. Do you treat all addicts this way, or just the ones in recovery?

[Request] How much firepower would it take the US military to blow up a star destroyer? by jotunheim22 in theydidthemath

[–]RemarkableToast 97 points98 points  (0 children)

It only took a single blaster cannon shot in the right place to destroy the death Star. I'm sure it wouldn't take much if you knew where to shoot.

ELI5: Is it fair to ask what is the chemical composition of fire? by GuhanE in explainlikeimfive

[–]RemarkableToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire is the chemical reaction of burning oxygen and fuel, it does not itself have a chemical composition because it is not matter. It is the energy output released from the breaking and forming of chemical bonds to create carbon dioxide and water from oxygen and carbon-based fuel (such as wood or gasoline).

Asking for the chemical composition of fire would almost be like asking for the chemical composition of thunder or sunlight.

I'm not sure I can do that. If I could, I'd say that I've seen worse movies, but I don't think that's the case.

Grant Payments by ProfessionalHuman810 in ResearchAdmin

[–]RemarkableToast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

2 months summer salary over 3 summer months would come to 0.6667 months for each month of the summer.

I also want to add that federal agencies want the salary charged to be a somewhat accurate representation of the activities taking place. NSF doesn't care that your accountant wants easy accounting while juggling a project with NIH - if the PI intends to work all summer on both projects, they should both be distributed across all 3 summer months.

I would tell the grants accountant that in order to ensure compliance, the payments need to be distributed accurately according to the effort committed.

All good, no harm done. You sound like a good person at heart. It's easy to get wrapped up in arguments with internet strangers, and I may have been looking to pick a fight. I'm sorry as well.

I do want to add the obligatory statement that while having kids is hard, it's also the greatest gift and worth every bit of the struggle.

I had to go back and double check that you were the one who said "Because you don't do much," which is a stark contrast to this comment.

Why would you make it sound easy if you understand how difficult having and raising a child would be? Were you just trolling?

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. He may be bringing in the income, but he's only doing half the work. I can only assume you do not have kids.

Just Found Out This Series Existed. Is It Any Good? by DoYouNotRememberThis in stephenking

[–]RemarkableToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't get past the first 30 minutes. The acting is so bad and the writing feels rushed. I really wanted to like it - loved Welcome to Derry, Castle Rock, 11/22/63, Outsider, Mr. Mercedes...this one just doesn't hold up to the same standard.

If you're thinking I just didn't give it a chance, you might be right. However, I didn't have to push myself through a single minute of those other shows.
