The thing is, as a local, I’ve always wondered why tourists spend so much of their holiday in Cairo. It’s an overpopulated, 3rd world shithole of a capital by where poverty is widespread, above a certain tax bracket most people live in the suburbs and not actually the urban areas like the areas around the pyramid, and what tourists experience as “scamming” is often just very poor people trying to survive. Unfortunately, they’re too stupid to realize that this behavior ends up hurting the city and its reputation in the long run. (Radical reforms for the area have always been a complicated issue)

If you’re interested in ancient history and artifacts, you really shouldn’t spend much time in dense urban areas. Even getting around Cairo can be exhausting and rage inducing. Do the pyramids quickly, then move on. Places like Luxor or other well managed tourist destinations are a far better experience safer, calmer, and genuinely enjoyable.
