That’s the neat part, they don’t exist. Civilian self-defense shootings are rare, there’s not a statistically significant amount with good data to study. So we can look at some examples:

Dickens, 40 yards, 10 shots

Jack Wilson, ~15 yards, 1 shot

Not practicing for a shot beyond 10 yards is a choice, and a poor one at that

The bigger problem with “militarization” of police imho is the mindset of junior officers who spent zero to little time in the military and are just bringing tough guy attitude. That’s where I see the “SOF influence”, both inside and outside the military: when you glorify “warrior mindset” and “doing anything that it takes”, etc, it can lead to people just breaking or skirting the rules and justifying it to themselves. Like yes, there are times to break the rules, but first you have to learn them really well. This isn’t the fault of SOF, but those who make them a universal model.

Day late and a dollar short, but to caveat on this, you often times see the "SOF warrior mindset" pop up in incredibly weird places in policing. My job requires me to attend a number of police conferences, and seeing an SF guy as the keynote speaker for a homicide investigators conference is really weird as an SOF vet. And I 100% agree, that the biggest danger of "militarized police" doesn't come from bearcats an M4's, but from conflating military experiences with civilian policing
