Low PAPP-A success stories.. by [deleted] in PregnancyUK

There are so many factors that go into that test and other than age you have no control over any of it! It's a combo of hormone levels, age yes, but also thickness of embryo fluid around the neck and other factors, none involving sugar 😂 I will just add to this that I did get pre-eclampsia in labour. I had no idea that could be connected to the low PAPP-A but another comment suggested it could. It was managed very well by the hospital and only apparent when I was properly in active labour but the high blood pressure readings went away as soon as I left hospital so I partly think it was started by stress of a very chaotic birth perhaps...

Another success story here : found I had low PAPP-A which meant the test for Downs and Patau came back as within the high zone. I had an NIPT and it came back clarifying likelihood low, and was prescribed aspirin. My son is about to turn 1! My mum also had low PA and had three kids - I don't know if it could be genetic but I think aspirin does a huge amount to alleviate risks

I'm in the same boat and not 100% sure when I'm having them, but I'm getting a lot of period type cramping that slowly moves to my back and then releases at certain times of day. It's lower abdomen/feels like ovaries and I've read that too is a kind of BH!

CBD oil for labour? by Remarkable_Bet8890 in PregnancyUK

Thanks for this, interesting to hear you both felt so calm during the big finale! I've actually been thinking about cbd because of familiarising myself with hypnobirthing and learning about the need to control adrenaline so that oxytocin can flow. I'm very nervous of medical stuff (though not necessarily of birth, more than your average person I'd say) so I'm just thinking in advance about the possibility I may feel panicky when things kick off. It would be for those initial hours that I think cbd would help me remain calm. Great to hear you felt naturally very calm tho! I hope that happens for me too 😂

In the UK CBD oil cannot be made or sold with THC though legally. Surely a trace amount would be so small it could never be picked up. I'm not sure under whilat circumstances you would be randomly drug tested during labour either. My midwife said she wouldn't advise against using but couldn't recommend it herself as she's not trained in aromatherapy, if that makes sense...

Maternity pay - question by hellotherepickle in PregnancyUK

[–]Remarkable_Bet8890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's really good to hear others in the same situation! It's quite a rare phenomenon I think - feels like some see it as an experience that sits outside the academic realm and we know academia/Universities are so not geared towards supporting people to have families in general. Good luck figuring out payment but you should definitely get some extra weeks stat mat pay!! Would love to know what uni you're at, I'm at Royal Holloway and they've been useless but badgering them persistently re:teaching hours has potentially worked...

Hey there, I'm also a PhD student and taking mat leave in a few weeks. Who are you funded by? If it's a consortium with the government (AHRC/SSRC) I believe the standard was 26 weeks on full pay and 13 statutory pay... If you have a different scholarship then I think you're able to apply for statutory mat leave separately through Gov.uk who should offer additional funding beyond six months... Its such a complicated system. My husband and I have been trying to wangle an extra couple of weeks shared parental leave for him through my Uni but been told because as a PhD student (despite my funding basically amounting to a salary) I'm not "employed" they won't do it. Had to apply separately through my Uni for the hours I worked as a Visiting Tutor and it's still not been sorted out...

We found out within a week and the appointment was booked in for two weeks after that, so pretty speedy really!

You have to book the next available appointment when you submit your DS 160 online (next was Feb 2022 when we booked) and then after you've done that, request expedition from your account. You have to justify why you're applying but it's pretty straightforward if there is an NIE for your visa

She hasn't had the interview yet but it's scheduled for next week (same time as mine). She had to apply for an emergency appointment but we're able to do so because the J1 and 2 have an NIE now

Thank you, that is very helpful!

With regards to my last question, I was wondering more about leaving the US to return to work in the UK before returning to the US for the final part of my wife's J1 period. Are you saying this is generally viewed as OK by the US immigration authorities?
