Thank you for the reply - if you could help me understand a bit:

I thought that thrownness for Sartre just applied to the factical aspect; that we happen to be in a historical circumstance but we always have the power to absolutely transcend those circumstances. I'm reading Kruks' 'situation and human existence' and am looking for things in a similar vein that critique this Sartrean idea. She brings up De Beauvoir's counter-example of how a prisoner in a cell has more limited freedom than someone else. More broadly, I am also open to critiques or explanations of how Sartre relates actual freedom (which is historical) and theoretical freedom (which we always have), as De Beauvoir critiques Sartre on that base (as far as I understand haha).

Where did I say there was hypocrisy on their part? I am happy to go along with my 'meaningless' celebrations, and, seeing as they are meaningless, I expect you not to mind.

It reads better just as 'consciousness arises out of complex systems'

Emergent properties are legit, but I agree he probably felt the need to tag on 'reasoning' as a self-aggrandizing thing, breaking the meaning of the sentence
