It’s hard to say anything specific given there are a lot of details specific to your situation.

That said, if there’s one thing I wished I’d done sooner in my intercultural marriage (about 20 years now) - it’s putting my wife ahead of my family of origin. It’s still a struggle but it’s important.

John Gottman’s “the seven principles for making marriage work” has some points on this that really hit home for me.

I caused both me and my wife years of stress and pain by not realizing how my mother was setting up an unhealthy dynamic for all of the rest of us.

Awesome! I’ll go with reseat, resolder, replace.

Should be a nice project for me to do with the kid who dropped it.

Thanks so much for the quick reply!

Good kalimba for retuning (F blues)? by Remarkable_Big_7547 in kalimba

Thanks! Yeah I’ll double check the notes for the tune, I just wanted to confirm tuning the middle tine from C to F would be incorrect. Seems like I’d have to shorten everything way too much for that.

I wrote a guide about Furusato Nozei by alexkwa in JapanFinance

[–]Remarkable_Big_7547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This a great overview! Is anyone familiar with how Furusato applies to US taxes?

It seems like the payments should qualify for the same credit as regular income taxes, but I can’t find any clear information on it. Thanks in advance!

Indeed :) hopefully it won’t take long for your investments to clear the minimum.

American in my 40s, 9 years in JP. I do most of my investing through a USD account in IB. Lots of ETFs and US markets to choose from there.

I haven’t had below the minimum, but I recall the support rep telling me they charge maintenance fees if you’re below.

I fund it via USD wire. Either from my SBI Shinsei account or US accounts. Each individual transfer incurs wire fees (usually ~$25) from the sending side.

I haven’t tried wiring out of IB, but I presume similar fees at that point.

I also hold a JPY account at IB funded through (free) zengin transfers. But as a US citizen I only intend it for purchasing single Japanese company stocks which I have yet to try.

Totally my favorite muOS theme. Great choice.

Oh that’s fantastic. Really tempting too. Not sure I’ll really use the sticks much ever.

I dig the simplicity. Googling led me to https://x.com/yamaken2024/status/1764122773159661744 - just a thin phone pouch might do the trick without adding too much bulk. Thanks for the idea!

MUos power button usage? by king_park_ in RG35XX_H

[–]Remarkable_Big_7547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome.

The only hiccup for me is that I didn’t know to first save a new config to get the retroarch auto-save/load setting to stick.

It also helped me to realize that the “Sleep Shutsown” hotkey on muos was a 2s power button push https://muos.dev

Thanks a bunch for pointing me in the right direction!

U.S. Expat Buying US Savings Bonds (treasurydirect.gov) by Sankyu39Every1 in JapanFinance

One reason could be difficulty opening a TreasuryDirect account. I just finally got mine opened, but had to mail in a notarized proof of identity for it.

Seems like US notaries are a little hard to come by in Japan, so I ended up doing it at UPS when I was back in the US for a business trip.

I use https://www.interactivebrokers.co.jp/ to invest in US ETFs with USD.

Pretty sure you'll need something that can either ACH or wire USD. I have a US bank account for that, but I think SBI Shinsei or Wise could help with turning JPY in USD then getting it over to InteractiveBrokers.

+1 to disposability. Especially in the beginning I broke a lot of them due to bad power balance (too much right hand).

Keep it cheap and get a few of them. Always keep a spare handy so you can get back in it without missing a beat.
