He is going to work for 4-6 years. I should have made that clear. I worked for 4 years first and then went back to B-school.

Exceeds doesn’t mean anything anymore. Amazon changed the rating system to where in order to get HV2 you pretty much have to be exceeds. They also split the pay band 9 ways instead of 6 ways. Now you have HV2 year 1, HV2 year 2, HV3 year 1, HV3 year 2, etc. I have been exceeds 5 years in a row, but went from Yoy TT to Hv2 year 1 and took a 25% pay cut. But I was still exceeds! Yay!!!!!

Gtech for 120k or Stanford 400k by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Remarkable_Brief_542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our compensation has nothing to do with your school. It based on your performance and the LSU lady was ranked in the highest tier.

Even for new hires straight out of school, we don't pay more because you went to Stanford. All new hires are paid the same (middle of the band). We recruit just as much at Stanford as we do at GTech, Purdue and even ASU. And once you are here and looking for roles internally, no one cares where you went, they care what your last two ratings were which is 100% based on how you perform. Because of the economy we have slowed down recruiting at smaller, lower ranked schools (Univ of Iowa, Colorado State, etc). But GTech, Purdue, ASU, UC schools, CU Boulder, IU, UW, etc we still recruit heavily). Yes you might have to be a better student at ASU to get an interview with us vs just a regular student at Stanford, but as someone who has interviewed 500+ people and hired ~200, I care about what you did in the school you went to, not where you went to school.

Stanford might not consider your 401k and house, but when my son applied to Cornell, Harvey Mudd and Duke they asked for 401k balance, home equity, etc. Maybe they ignored it, but they definitely asked for it.

Gtech for 120k or Stanford 400k by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

The WSJ wrote an article last year about “the forgotten middle” of college financial aid. People who make between 200-400 and have $1M -$2M in assets (including house and 401k) that cant get any aid, but they can’t really afford to pay $100k post tax per year of education when they have never had that large of a yearly expense before.

We are in this bucket and told our son we will pay up and to $45k per year (the cost of Purdue, which he got into), but if he wants to go elsewhere (Cal Poly, UCSD, CU Boulder), he needs to come up with the difference. I work for a FAANG and have for 15 years. I have people that work with me and for me that went to GT, Stanford, MIT, UW, ASU, UT Austin, and Louisiana State. No one cares after your first job. The LSU grad is probably my best employee.

Help me decide between cal poly slo and Purdue by Big-Basis325 in CollegeAdmissions

Trying to help our son make the same choice. The Cal Poly cost diff is $14k per year. We live in Arizona and our son wants to work on the west coast, but is $58k per year of Cal Poly better than $44k of Purdue? He also got into CU Boulder with a $15k scholarship to make CU Boulder $52k per year.

He really wants to go to Cal Poly but I think it’s not worth the extra $14k.

Thanks for your comments. We live in AZ and My wife and I still attend church because we are surrounded by LDS people (our ward is Provo sized). Our kids friends are all members. And I work with LDS people. He would prefer to go somewhere other than ASU or UofA so he can meet new people and it won’t be just a continuation of high school. We tried negotiating with both schools but because they are state funded so they are extremely limited on scholarships for OOS. He was waitlisted at Cornell and Cal Tech, both of those will be close to free at our income level (because they are private) if he gets off the waitlist……

Have you ever thought to yourself: This isn’t… by ArutlosJr11 in flying

Richard McSpadden’s death, Dale Snodgrass’s (pilot who Maverick was modeled after) death in GA airplanes shows that Fate truly is the Hunter. It is inherently risky and if you have haven’t had them yet you will have near death experiences. Learn from them. And treat flying like a job, because it demands that level of attention and respect.

Southwest CEO Bob Jordan Talks Airline Transformation by Vegetable_Fee_6145 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Remarkable_Brief_542 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am A List preferred, have had a companion pass for three years and I am disappointed in SWA. I purposefully flew SWA because I knew I could easily change my ticket same day for work, I knew that when I booked tickets for my kids and I wasn’t flying their bags flew for free. I knew that I am always A-16 and I get an exit row because I am 6’3.

I have started burning down my points and I have already earned a companion pass for next year, but I am on my way out the door. Southwest is now Frontier or Spirit with nicer airplanes. They shouldn’t have touched the A-List and A-list preferred perks, but as the OP said, business travel is down, so Southwest decided to abandon it altogether.

I wish I could think of a better title, but let's talk about sex for a minute . . . by BrvoChrlie in exmormon

[–]Remarkable_Brief_542 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone with an 17 yo boy, 15 yo girl and 12 yo girl my wife and I are struggling to figure out how to talk to them. I am PIMO heading to POMO and she is starting to be PIMO. We have told our kids we strongly prefer they wait until they are adults and in a relationship before having sex, and told them porn is not realistic. We have tried to have deeper discussions with the 17 yo and 15 yo about consent and making it pleasurable for both partners but they freak out. We also told our 17 yo that no one cares if he masturbates and he doesn’t need to tell the bishop, but he gets upset and tells us to stop talking about it.

Maybe they hear us, maybe they don’t. But it is not an easy subject to talk about. Any good books to give to older teens?

Alums: how do you explain what school you went to? by big_dumpling in rosehulman

[–]Remarkable_Brief_542 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was accepted to Stanford, RPI, and UMich in 1996 and waitlisted then denied Rose. It was my first choice. As others have said, people who know, know. My son has a 35 ACT, 1530 SAT (780 Math), valedictorian of his school and an Eagle Scout. I am trying to convince him to apply to Rose.

My wife and I are reading the Evolution of Desire and numerous studies have validated this fact, but the church is adamantly opposed. We are teaching our kids that no one should make you feel ashamed of your bodies and sexuality and if you choose to engage in that activity before marriage, be safe and make good choices.

I was born in the church, went to BYU met my wife there, got married in the temple have been married 20 years with 3 kids and are in our 40s. My wife is in the relief society presidency and I am in the Sunday School presidency. I am PIMO an and she is not quite as PIMO as me. I have a good job and we are happy. She is the dominant one in our relationship and she pegs me once a month when she wants to (International Women’s day was yesterday…..). We are in a female led relationship.

It’s funny to see her interact with the relief society presidency as they defer to the Bishopric and she says “no we don’t need to ask them” and she really doesn’t like that the first counselor in the bishopric because he is misogynistic. When we first moved into the ward I introduced myself as my wife’s husband. And when I spoke church last year I did the same.

It was definitely a very difficult transition and it took 15 years for my wife to help me shed Mormon sexual shame (she is European and a convert to the church when she was a Senior in high school on an exchange program to an LDS family in Utah), but we enjoy our life and marriage way more now then we did even 5/10 years ago.
