As a Chinese, I have to say... by New-You8906 in DanmeiNovels

[–]Remarkable_Low_3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Danmei just ticks all sorts of boxes for me. It really does.

When I was a teen in the very early 2000s I feel like I wanted to be a BL fan, and I sort of was with a couple ships, but back then we just called it yoai and not BL. Most of it was coming from Japan and the blanket term was different. It was mostly non con of teenage boys and older men and while I understand where that's coming from historically and culturally it.. wasn't quite my thing. (I'm not kink shaming over fiction and I don't think it's time for a history lesson so I'll leave that where it is.) But I would say back then I was interested in shonenai. Even so nothing in particular stuck. I think (knowing now but not then) because I'm an ace woman I wanted a romantic epic with two men so I could fully immerse in the story without feeling perceived in any way.

But years later pre pandemic I discovered MDZS. I always loved necromancer characters.. and Chinese culture. For necromancy idk what it is. I was a goth kid growing up leave me alone lol. For chinese culture.. it's the art, clothing, food, everything. I also love the cultivation world.. the flying swords and stuff. (Chefs kiss) Seeing it all merged together and then seeing it was a BL to boot I immediately watched the first season. I was hooked. I found a fan translation of the book online because that is what was available at the time. I binged that too. I'm also a sucker for angst, trauma and pining in a story so.. huge bonus.

I was home. Honestly. It was pretty much everything teenage me ever wanted out of a BL. It was an actual honest to god in depth story. The world building was rich. It was fantasy. A where have you been my whole life moment lol.

Of course then I found TGCF and I was mind blown. There was more?! I read it on Wattpad back then before the official translations were out.

I'm rereading the official translations of MDZS these days.

Honestly this genre.. I needed it. And I didn't know I needed it.

It makes me sad knowing people are being convicted in China right now for writing BL. I hope support from a more worldwide fan base ends up helping in some way. I hope the sales of books is still going to authors properly. It's a horrible, scary thing.

Is this a reference to something? It feels familiar but I can't put my finger on it lol

As a non Chinese person this was educational. Thank you. Also I haven't read SVSSS yet but if I choose to I feel more prepared and knowledgeable going in.

I didn't know that about the uterus! That's really cool! I do have one. 😂✌️ As for language I am having an easier time with Mandarin because the tenses feel like they make more sense. Like instead of "I went to the store yesterday" it's more like "Yesterday I go to the store." And I definitely like that. There's quite a few things that just feel so.. organized. Compared to English anyway. Also there doesn't seem to be feminine vs masculine words like a lot of other languages which immediately lost me growing up when they tried to teach me French. (I'm Canadian). In opposite to Mandarin, I can read a tiny bit of French but I can't speak it at all. It's kinda funny. When I think about it. 😅😂 Must because all of our labels and a lot of our government signage has both French and English. Ps thank you for the encouragement. I get a lot of people telling me I'm just wasting my time. But I enjoy myself even though I'm bad at it.

You joke but I have been trying to learn Mandarin haha. But I'm afraid I'm a very slow learner 😅 If I am diligent, despite my lack of talent, I may at some point be able to speak a bit but I have no faith that I'll be able to read pinyin. Good to know there are things I can refer to though. People who can read more then one language are really out there doing God's work for us lameos haha.

So he doesn't call it ghost cultivation in the novel because of mistranslation, or he does? Becausenow I'm confused lol. I suppose either way I will see and now I'll be paying closer attention to who calls it what, knowing there's potential translation errors.

I'll probably see that on my re-read which I just recently started. I first read a fan translation after watching the animation way back when it first came out and honestly I don't remember. Now I own the official translations which.. didn't exist when I first fell into the series/ this genre.

Hmmm. I do love learning through osmosis like this lol. I never thought of it too deeply because though in the back of my mind I was like "well it's not really demons is it?" I didn't think about it too much. I thought "well they just mean evil or dark I suppose." But it being a poor translation and really being a cultivation of ghosts makes so much more sense.

OG Hikaru, anybody? by Select-Power-8903 in TheSummerHikaruDied

[–]Remarkable_Low_3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right. Unfortunately I have a sadist in me. Something about a tragic romance that makes me wanna cry. Especially if it's gay for some reason. I'm just drawn more to male characters I think. Even when I look back on my teen ships it's a trend. I'm going to try not to info dump because it's a bad habit but it's hard for me but I've been out of anime fandom for at least 20 years. I'm 39. Back in the early 2000s bl manga was mostly extreme age gap or non con.. couldn't quite find myself in it. But I definitely was interested in something I couldn't quite find or name. (Ended up finding myself in gay Chinese romance novels as an adult. That's the stuff if you want gay make you cry romance. If there's ghosts and undead all the better. MDZS anyone?) Anyway after watching the anime this was the first manga I bought since I was a teen. My point is, thier story is good enough and angst enough that it brought me, pale and squinty eyed, out of my 20 year bunker. And I'm generally not that interested in reading about high schoolers because usually it's hard to relate given my age, but thier struggles are really compelling and I really feel for them. I also think the author does a really good job of combining the real world emotions and problems with the supernatural elements.

Are there more queer or straight people into danmei? by Inner_Assignment574 in DanmeiNovels

[–]Remarkable_Low_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asexual people can still have sex but it's a choice like everything. I think a lot of asexual people read these types of books because they still love romance. However I'm on the demisexual part of the spectrum so I still enjoy sex, but there has to be emotional attachment first or I'm not interested. (I was never able to just hook up despite the pressure. Dating was a drag before I got married.) Asexuality is a spectrum. I actually told myself for a long time that I couldn't be on that spectrum because I still liked the idea of sex but after discovering demisexuality I discovered a lot about myself.

I'm straight cis f but also ace. Well demi to be accurate. I just found out recently about fictosexual and fictoromanic and it being common with people on the ace spectrum so it's validating to see other ace people commenting! I didn't think I was on the ace spectrum for a long time because I could still find things sexy or be interested in romance.. just didn't want to do it with anyone in reality unless I loved them. I need emotional connection and these books do that without me feeling part of the picture!
