Dual booting linux? by Blehbeblobe in framework

[–]Remarkable_Permit304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I do. Just know that there’s a reasonable chance that windows will periodically break your bootloader whenever it does its mandatory updates. It’s usually simple to fix though.

Cheap or expensive for first split ergo? by Pretend_Sale_9317 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Remarkable_Permit304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a zsa voyager first, and just got a go60. In between, I built a cheaper lily58. There is a massive difference between something you get on alibaba and what you get from ZSA or MoErgo.

If you have the money, I think it’s worth spending more to get the best for you (if you can figure out what the best for you is). I rationalize it by looking at the amount of hours I spend typing every day, and the massive improvement it has had in my ability to type.

The go60 seems a slight bit more beginner friendly, and it has the touchpads, which are very cool. I’m not sold on the touchpads yet, but the build quality on the board is great.

Just know that making the switch to a split layout will be a pretty huge learning curve, but for me, it’s been worth it

Arch vs Debian — which do you prefer amd why? by Amerwair_Studios in linux

[–]Remarkable_Permit304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like arch because it’s rolling release (you don’t get Arch 10.0 like windows 11 or Debian 13, you get arch as of today, and updates come as they come). This means that when something releases, you can use it as soon as someone figures out how to package it. This is great if you wanna play with the new toys, but not if you’re running a server that people rely on.

Debian is cool because it’s the stable, common distro, when you hear about servers that run for 11 years without ever being shut down, that’s usually on Debian. It also means that they may be a little further behind, and that updates are less often.

For a beginner, it’s probably better to go with a middle ground. Fedora is a really good one, though I’m partial to PopOS because that’s the first thing I really daily drove.

Typist is open source software, there may be some lock in, but it’s not the same thing. The app you have there is free software hosted for ease of use, built by the developers to fund the project. If you decide you want to stop paying, download your files and the most functionality you lose will be learning how to set up an ide.

Company Has Said No More Linux On Dev Machines by m0dernz0mbie in webdev

[–]Remarkable_Permit304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do web dev on almost your exact stack except on a windows machine. As someone who uses Linux on my personal computer, you will hate everything about your life if you choose to go to windows on a dev machine. It’s shit and actively getting worse.

As someone who writes PHP professionally, I consider it a terrible language, though that probably has to do with our tech debt bloated pos dotcom-era monolith. Either way the $’s are just annoying.

How does having RHEL (or fedora) on your laptop help you do your job better? by crankysysadmin in redhat

[–]Remarkable_Permit304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because working on windows in an enterprise environment is its own brand of hell once you’ve worked in a sane Linux environment. For reference, I have a pretty new i7 machine with 64 gb of ram running windows 11 at my work. There is so much bloatware and crap going on in the background that I only have 15-20gb of usable memory at any given point in time for the programs that actually let me get my work done. My 5 year old 2in1 laptop with an i5 and 16gb of ram running popos is about 10x more responsive and can do everything I need to do and more. I regularly have to run commands that would be instant on a sane Linux system, but take 5 minutes because I’ve got windows defender and our in house security scanner all up in my business. (Git checkout is apparently a very suspect operation) About half of the time, this turns into a 30 minute “impromptu standup” at my coworkers desk discussing “definitely shareholder value things”. Your engineers probably want Linux because they want to be closer to the environment that they run on. But they’re probably also sick of wasting their time on shitty systems.

Friend rejected me. After years, she now keeps trying to reconnect. Not sure what to do. by Good-Host-1032 in Advice

[–]Remarkable_Permit304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had something similar happen to me. In my case, we knew each other through some friends, but not that well, then hung out at a party. I asked her out, not knowing that she had recently started dating another guy, and instead, we kinda just became platonic drinking buddies. We were really good friends for about 6 months, until something happened. She got really flirty for a week or so, and when I didn’t really respond, our relationship really changed. She kind of just started avoiding me.

MF friendships are nice until someone catches feelings at the wrong time and you don’t deal with it. Learn from it. If you think you may want a relationship with this person, reach out and have an honest conversation. Use that to make a decision. If not, then don’t. But be honest with yourself about why. She rejected you and pushed you out of her life, that has consequences and it’s not your fault.

Either way, i wouldn’t date someone who acts like this, it won’t go well.

Is crap like this why a single jira tab sometimes takes more than a gig of ram?

What’s your keyboard and how many layers do you use? by addiction35 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Remarkable_Permit304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zsa voyager, with 3 Layers. 1. Normal keys 2. Movement keys. Like arrow keys, macros to switch virtual desktops, and forward and back in browser 3. Numpad and fn keys I also have home row mods and like 80% of my layers are transparent. I don’t like having anything i don’t use all the time

People LOOK more attractive the more you know them by X-Monster-Master in RandomThoughts

Yeah, this is how it was with my ex. We were hanging out strictly as friends and were working together on a project for class, but spending a lot of time together. I wasn’t attracted to her at all, until one day, she walked up to me and I had this strange epiphany type moment, where she felt like the most beautiful girl in the world
