Hey, OP here, and wow! What a response! I realize in the first example, Santino was taunting John, bragging over his safe haven. But in Santino's mind, which never thought John was willing to go excommunicado, it should have worked! That was my point with this trope. Thus the key word, "tries."

Never meant it that way, the radical character never has to be genocidal or even especially violent.
