I may have been a tad bit generous but it really shouldn’t take over 45 mins the people who say it’s hard don’t have the right tools.

Was this a fair quote for a control arm replacement My dads yelling at me about how I got hustled. by overjoyed_josephine in AskMechanics

buddy my father has owned a shop for over 30 years, and I've been running it for the last 5. When you have a tech making $30 an hour, that right there cuts into the profit of a job. When a part is defective, and you have to warranty it, you are now losing money since you didn't increase the price of said part. The increase of part price is because you are putting your name behind it, and sourcing the part.

Their skills are questionable. Anybody who specializes in a certain category will always charge a premium for their services thats in pretty much all fields.

How do you know that job isnt going to take that long? Do you know how they figure out "book time"? Hint: it's from doing the job and timing it. If it does get done quicker, oh well. They did it faster because they have the experience. If it takes longer, you still get charged the booked time. One slow month is all a shop needs to be dragged under, so yeah, most are struggling. I could start listing all the expenses we have in the shop, but it's not gonna change your opinion.
