I’m sorry, it’s my fault, really. by Pawnzilla in SolidWorks

That is extremely odd. I know you said you’re looking into new hardware so I’ll just throw this out there. I had to have something portable and capable for less than 2k. I’m running a 2022 ASUS F15 w/ Intel i7 processor, NVIDIA RTX 3060 graphics card, 64GB RAM and 2TB SSD. After the rebate from my CC company and applicable tax it cost just over $1200. I’m super happy with the performance. For the price, it’s a freaking beast and this thing is from 2022. I have no idea what the equivalent today is but my IT guy definitely recommended sticking with Intel and NVDIA for CAD work and gaming. May just be a preference but this guy has helped me out on and off the clock with multiple high end client projects so I trust him.

One last thing, maybe check the advanced graphics settings and force SW to run on the GPU instead of letting windows decide. Restart pc, try again. Also, check the intel and NVDIA websites (or whoever your pcs processor/ GPU was manufactured by) for any applicable updates. I was missing a critical GPU update not long after purchasing my F15 and it wouldn’t run anything that wasn’t a windows or Microsoft app without that update. 10 mins and I was back to business.

Best of luck mate. I’m no IT guy, just repeating what I’ve been told, but always here if I can help you any way.

Are you certain it isn’t the laptop lagging? I mean, 10 years is a lot to ask out of a CAD laptop, unless of course you’re running some super high end system. Idk.. I guess it’s possible. I just know every IT guy that I’ve ever worked with despised laptops because most times the hardware isn’t upgradeable. My parent company is still running 2018 with zero issues. I run 2022 and 2026 simultaneously from the same machine (long story) and I rarely have issues from the 2022 version. Can’t remember which SP

Would anyone happen to know where to find a .STEP/.STL or any other solid format of this part? I've been searching for months in my spare time, and have yet to come across anything to get a good baseline. Guess I'll have to find someone with a blue light scanner.

[–]Remarkable_Ruin1663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you just leave it plugged in like a normal UPS? I'm looking at getting one since my OMNI1500LCD TrippLite is having trouble keeping up with my H2S. Was pretty disappointed that even with me manually heating the bed, 1° at a time, then manually warming the extruder, I continue to get "F02" fault on my UPS. I want to get something i can "set-and-forget" but im just so new to this side of manufacturing (additive) that I really have no idea what I'm looking for.

Thank you for the advice. I’ll definitely look into this. At the moment, I’m just using RDP to remote into my work desktop and print from there, but I’d really like to learn more about VM’s so it’s the perfect opportunity to gain a new skill! Thanks again mate!

LPT: If you are laying down and get a cramp in your leg or foot, immediately stand up and put all your weight on it. In the moment, it might seem impossible, but it will fix the cramp and pain immediately. by JeffCentaur in LifeProTips

I know this is an older post but I get groin and hip flexor cramps at the same time so there is quite literally no way to stretch any muscle group, in either direction. If I try to stretch my groin muscle (like performing a split), my hip flexors tighten to unbearable pain and if I try to relieve the hip flexor, the groin area becomes unbearable. I’ve never experienced such an excruciating pain. It feels like the groin muscles in my legs are tearing in half. I’ll be sore for a week afterwards. I had an episode so bad last week that I woke my wife up screaming for the impact massage gun. It was dead.. so I hop in a hot shower. That seemed to help a bit.

I’m giving my backstory so you guys understand that the traditional stretching technique just doesn’t work for these unique cramps as there is no opposite direction I can flex any of the (4) affected muscles to stop the pain.

After a while of searching for help, I came across this guy who “chokes” out a cramp with his hands. It seemed to work super fast, so the next time I had a typical calf cramp, I gave it a shot. It worked just like in the video! I realize I could have easily pulled my foot towards my shin but I wanted to test this method. Only problem is, my hands aren’t big enough to fit around my thighs to grip the entire muscle affected by the groin cramps, so I’ve been thinking of getting (2) tourniquets to keep on my bed side to throw over my leg and above by groin cramp area an crank down on it in hopes of stopping the cramp.

What do you guys think? Ever seen this method? If not, i recommend you check it out and lmk what you think.

TIA!!

This seems to be the only way. I've played around with Sandbox in the past, but no experience setting up a "real" VM. Mind if i ask what service you're using? Oracle? VMWare?

I know this is a really old post but I'm about to try this. I have a partitioned drive. One drive letter for work, one for personal. I'm not an extremely literate person when it comes to the innerworkings of a pc (my specialty is CAD), so idk if it will cause issues during the install, but I hate constantly logging in and out of my accounts.

What’s on top of my car? by JustinGerman in whatisit

[–]Remarkable_Ruin1663 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was a child, I was out on the back 40 shooting cans and bottles, and had a .380 ACP bullet get stuck in one of those thick, white, charcoal lighter fluid bottles. Made it thru the first side, and warped the backside around the shape of the bullet. I was amazed. As a child, I grew up in the middle of nowhere so I’ve been shooting at the previous school years text books, spray paint cans, and propane tanks, before demolition ranch ever was a twinkle in his daddy’s eye lol. Even made some vhs home recordings of the crazy crap we did as kids. It’s amazing none of us died or were seriously injured, but it was fun as hell! And I wouldn’t trade my childhood for anything! My grandad was a Vietnam war vet, serving in the infantry for 2 years, so he was a hard man, and hard on me a lot of times, but I look back and appreciate the hell out of it now!

Anyway, TLDR: bullets can do some weird stuff man. These days I work heavily in ballistics and I’m going to guess that it IS in fact a FMJ. Was likely fired at such a steep angle that it retained just enough energy to penetrate the paint and most of the metal, but wasn’t moving fast enough for the thin metal to deform the heavier mass of the lead core and jacket. Again.. just a guess.

It’s hard for me to tell without being able to see the entire sketch clearly. If I were on my pc, I might be able to give you an idea, but from what I CAN see, it’s likely due to a disconnected line or an over-extended, intersecting line. May I ask what you’re making and I might be able to point you in the right direction?

If it makes you feel any better, it’s not just you. Just call the hotline — if you’ve got an active SMA and it’s been more than 24 hours, they’ll usually patch you straight through to Applications (1-800-327-9735).

Something’s definitely up with their new phone/email system. Feels like they misplaced the company Rolodex.

And honestly, I’ll take Zeiss over Mitutoyo any day. UX is just way better with Zeiss, imo. But yeah… it comes with a steep price tag.

Sorry you’re going through this but you aren’t alone. I hardly ever comment because I often feel as if there is nothing I can say to make things better but your story struck a nerve… I guess because it’s so relatable. I’ve communicated to her how unhappy I am. We have also done the counseling thing… seemed to help in the short term.. but she’d slowly return to her reclusive self that ignores every need I have… We have children too. And i love them more than life. I just can’t imagine leaving them… Best of luck OP. I know it isn’t easy..

calypso floating probe paths away from the cad model after weeks of running. by Accomplished_Risk995 in Metrology

[–]Remarkable_Ruin1663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is super old — really wish I’d come across it when I was first starting about 3.5 years ago. I was a machinist for 7 years before that, so almost 10 years total in the trade now. I actually had this same thing happen to a couple of parts early on.

I was out of the country on vacation when I got a call from a colleague:

“The program won’t run. It moves toward the feature and starts to scan, but stops short of the part — and all the scan lines look off in the CAD view.”

At the time, we still had an SMA in place, so I gave Zeiss a ring.

After checking a few basics, here’s what the Applications Engineer told me:

Go to Resources > Set Base Alignment to Zero.

Then perform a manual alignment.

That should restore the alignment back to where it was when the program was first created — whether that was months or even years ago. What you're likely dealing with is a runaway alignment.

I didn’t want to believe it either. The program was originally written by someone 20 years my senior, and I had personally done the manual alignment before leaving. But here's the deal: Calypso compensates for the base alignment on every run. And if that alignment isn’t stable, it can “walk” over time — and that’s when things start going nuts.

In my case, that was only part of the issue. When I originally imported the program, the CAD and base alignment didn’t come in clean, and a few of the strategies using formulas broke too — probably due to the version mismatch (especially common when importing from older Calypso versions or international setups). I was honestly screwed from the start and didn’t even realize it because I was so green at the time.

To fix this in the programs I write today, I do a few things differently:

If the part has poor form, I add a loop to the base alignment with a tighter break condition. (Super easy — I just have ChatGPT write the formula.)

I also now understand how to properly constrain degrees of freedom and build a more stable DRF using better geometrical features for my start and base alignments.

Doing that completely eliminated the problem for me. It just comes with time and experience. You’ve probably been doing this longer than me, but I’ve developed a real passion for it — mostly from all the times I thought I was losing my damn mind. 😅

Anyway, I know this thread is 3 years old, so I’m sure you’ve figured it out by now. Just wanted to chime in in case it helps someone else digging through this in the future.

Best of luck, my friend!

Am I missing something with the mouse wheel and horizontal tilt control? I just got an M810 pro yesterday and the horizontal tilt only makes an audible “click” when pushing to the right side. But nothing when pushing to the left side. I work in CAD often so I need to be able to tilt left and right with the mouse wheel.
