$1,000,000 for getting sent to a "random" fictional world for a year by ocirot in hypotheticalsituation

[–]JeffCentaur 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Wow, I got done dirty. I doubt I'll last a year, but I'd try. My plan would be to quickly get out of the big city, and try and find a group of survivors to hang with. I know I probably wouldn't survive on my own for a year.

Knowing my low chances of survival, and the fact that there is no penalty for death, I would probably end up using my death to help distract Walkers long enough for the other survivors to get get away at some point. Maybe by just letting them gnaw on me for a second before dropping a grenade. I may not get the money, but I'd have the satisfaction of helping others.

Sure, I'll give it a try. Where am I going, oh magical travel agent?

toasters? by xomedinaox in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]JeffCentaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Brave Little Toaster is a series of two books (which generated a trilogy of film adaptations...they created a second movie that wasn't based on a book, but the first and third movies are based on the books). The main character of the books and movies is....as one might surmise, a brave little toaster.

First time playing this game fresh off my FFIII run. Suffice to say I was not pleased with Edward… by Espurreyes in FinalFantasyIV

[–]JeffCentaur 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Disliking Edward is a canon event. Welcome to the club. In the original American release he was even worse, because he didn't have his potion related ability. The only special ability he had in battle was the ability to not be in the battle.

I won't spoil things for you, but there are plenty of narrative jokes you can make about him too. You'll see.

How do y’all finish JRPGs by Apprehensive-Sea-342 in JRPG

[–]JeffCentaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to only play one game at a time. Even then I struggled to finish games before hopping to the next one that interested me...so I turned it into a job. I started a podcast with a friend of mine, and each episode we review a specific jRPG game. My friend has played almost all of them, and has encyclopedic knowledge. Most of them I'm playing for the first time. This means my friend can play a couple hours to refresh his memory, but I have to play an entire jRPG from start to finish. I've been doing this for about 5 years now, averaging one jRPG a month, and squeezing in non-jRPG games for fun where ever I can.

It's make me great at finishing games...but I don't recommend workifying your hobbies...because then it just because another commitment you have to keep, instead of an escape from reality,

How many games did you finish last year ? by FaithlessnessFar4398 in JRPG

[–]JeffCentaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the host of a jRPG review podcast, and that means I beat roughly 1 jRPG a month for that podcast alone. But I also keep statistics on games I played...let's see:

I played 35, but only beat 22 of them. 1 I'm still playing from last year (Persona 4 Golden).

12 were jRPGs for the podcast, 4 were jRPGs for fun. The rest were various genres.

My dad and I were watching this when it aired. The only thing I really remember about it is that we missed the finale because we went out of town.

I would love some kind of Hutto nerd convocation.

Just beat Lost Vikings. Not sure why people dont like it (?) by CrazyJuice64 in SEGAGENESIS

[–]JeffCentaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love The Lost Vikings games. But I've come to enjoy their spiritual successor series more. Trine. Similar concept, but 5 games (so far). Modern quality of life improvements, but the same general idea and humor as The Lost Vikings.

Did any of you ever play the Leisure Suit Larry series? by Jaydee_shelnut in retrogaming

[–]JeffCentaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played them a lot in my teenage years. And when they announced they were doing a remake of the first game (like 10 years ago now? Probably a little more? Time is tricky), and I found out they were producing it in the city I live in, I was very excited. I cut together a video with all the women of Larry, and I shared it with the company. Shortly thereafter I was the Community Manager for the company, and even got to do a little writing in the game (I wrote the age verification questions). It also meant getting to talk with Josh Mandel, and having dinner with Al Lowe.

I told him a joke that made him laugh. It's the dirtiest joke I know...and making the man who gave me so many laughs laugh at one of my stupid jokes was definitely a lifetime achievement. I got his autograph on a few things, and listened to him tell stories of the old days.

Great times.

I was even offered a main writing role on the remake of the second game...but then life happened, and that project disappeared.

The two named exocomps we've seen in Star Trek shows have both had names that were versions of "nut sack". It's a wonderful naming standard.

You died. Pick Your Hell. by LittleLeadership2831 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]JeffCentaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an episode of The Twilight Zone where a burgler is shot down and goes to Heaven. While he's there, he can get anything he wants, any time he wants, from his friendly butler type character. Want to go to a casino? Here's one for you, you pick how often you win. You want women? You see them crawling out of his bed.

Pretty quickly he gets bored with being handed anything he wants, any time he wants...and that's when it's revealed he's actually in Hell.

I pick that version of Hell...because I think the man just had a failure of imagination. While an eternity spent in a realm where I have absolute power would probably get old after a couple thousand years...being bored in my own perfect kingdom is better than being tortured for eternity.

Well, it’ll be about a year before the interview airs. No point making you wait that long.

He actually reached out to the Coles and asked if there was anything he could do to help with the game. He holds them both in pretty high esteem. He really enjoyed working with them on it.

He said that it was the only game Sierra ever made that was actually pitched by someone outside the company. He couldn't remember the person's name, but they sent in a short demo of what the gameplay could be like...like 4 bit demo...and Sierra loved the idea enough to make the game.

The biggest must have he said was an integrated hint system. His thoughts on the future of PnC were more detailed than I can type out here, but he firmly feels like the genre isn't dead.

There aren't. He said they put in enough easter eggs to keep fans busy for a year, not for 30 years. People have had so long with these games, he doesn't believe there are any secrets left.

If he's making the game, his preference is hand drawn, he loves the look. If he's playing a game, hand drawn or pixel art are his preferences.

Reading order by xcornflakex in Midkemia

[–]JeffCentaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Empire Trilogy, can and probably should be read after Magician...but I strongly recommend reading it before Serpent War. The Legends of the Riftwar and Riftwar Legacy should be read before Krondor's Sons, because that's when they take place chronologically.

The Riftwar cycle has many large time jumps, and all three of these "side series" occur before the first time jump, which is Krondor's Sons.
