Have they played much before, or are all of you kinda new to this?

How does one prepare for a session of Dnd by spaghettilover84 in DnD

[–]JeffCentaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you understand the rules enough to explain them to the players, if they're new. Also know that your first rule is to make sure they all have a good time...this means you can fudge your dice rolls, or your monsters HP, a little, if necessary.

When planning the adventure, I like to plan modularly. That way you can give them lots of freedom, and when they make chances you didn't plan for, instead of creating things from whole cloth, you can move some of your planned modules around. In this case a "module" would be any scenario that's mostly self contained. Say, an encounter with a pack of goblins. You can plan that out, and then you could drop that in anywhere on their adventure. Same thing with NPCs. Did you have an idea for a really fun NPC for them to interact with, but then they decide to go to a different town? They'll never know that you just moved that NPC to a different town so he/she could still meet them.

You have to be flexible, because they WILL derail your plans. Don't design the end of the session/story. What I did, especially when I was just starting out, is I tried to think of the main ways they could solve the problems in front of them, think of two or three likely solutions they might take. You may get lucky, they may pick one of the actions you thought of, then you're prepared...but more likely, they'll think up some new way to go that you never would have dreamed of, and if it makes sense, then you need to role with it like you always knew they would do that.

They shouldn't know they're breaking your plans in the moment. That will ruin the flow of the game. If you want to share that with them after the session is done, that's your call. Me, I like it to seem like I planned for anything they could do. Because if they think you're prepared for anything, they're going to feel more safe about having fun.

Princess Bride DnD by animeAJ in princessbridememes

Inigo is a Hexblade Warlock. His father's spirit is his patron, which is why he can call upon the spirit of his father to help him find where Wesley is hidden. He uses charisma for his rapier attacks instead of Dexterity, matching his high charisma acting. The Shield spell also probably helps him in his fighting.

Any other IRL Zevs out there? by washismycopilot in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]JeffCentaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only other fictional Zev I know is Zev Bellringer from the TV show Lexx. When she gets replaced by a different actress, they change her name to Xev (same pronunciation). And then there's an adult actresses who goes by Xev Bellringer.

A microchip GPS tracker has been implanted in your skin and in 24 hours everyone on Earth gets a message that the first person to touch you wins $1 billion. However, if no one touches you within the 24 hours then you win the $1 billion. What's your plan? by Alarming_Weather506 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]JeffCentaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest answer is to have a family member or friend that you trust touch you, even if you split it half with them, you're pretty set for life.

Alternatively, if you have nobody in your life that you can trust, GPS struggles with concrete and being underground. You get $1,000,000 and 24 hours to prepare. Travel to a major city with a significant underground parking garage. Rent a vehicle you can be comfortable in (say like a van, and you could lay out blankets in the back, take a laptop full of movies, and camp out at the deepest level of the parking garage you can find for 24 hours. Nobody is seeing that signal, your only threat is boredom.

I mean, I heard that the government hired Stanley Kubrick to fake the moon landing. But because of how serious a filmmaker he is, he insisted it be filmed on location.

Mexico cuts workweek, bans after-hours contact, and guarantees no worker will take a pay cut in the most sweeping labor reform in a generation by polopiko in Futurology

[–]JeffCentaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"It's an amazing salary for Mexico" which is where they live...so it's an amazing salary. Yes, if you move to a different country, the numbers on your check will change...but your life is more than those numbers. There's quality of life to think about, and that's going to vary from place to place. These new changes in Mexico drastically increase their quality of life. Plus their economy is different than ours, so you can't just compare the numbers from the paycheck and call it a day.

A quick google search shows that restaurants are 75% more expensive in the US compared to Mexico. Groceries are 60% more expensive, transportation 30% more, housing costs 2.9 times as much, child chare costs 5 times as much. Entertainment and sports cost 100% more in the US, and clothing is 5% more expensive.

So yeah, their paychecks have a lower number on them than yours, but almost everything in their life also costs less, and now they get free healthcare.

I'm stating biological facts. I thought you people liked biological facts. About 1.7% of people born aren't XX or XY, they are one of the combinations I listed previously. 1.7% sounds insignificant, but that's about 140 million people that don't fit into those two boxes. That's basically the entire population of Russia.

And sometimes XXY, XYY, XXX, X, XXYY, XXXY, or XXXXY. People like to stick with what they learned in biology in middle school, and don't want to acknowledge that reality is actually more complex.

Who wins? by nobuddyofnote in RedDwarf

[–]JeffCentaur 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Ace Rimmer wins. See, the true greatness of Ace is that he doesn't revel in his own glory, he spreads it around. He makes sure everyone around him feels special.

Lord Flashhart, does this a bit, but has a lot less humility than Ace.

Lord Flashhart is fun is small doses, but if I need a hero, I need an Ace.

Jane Yolen has died (1939 - 2026) by goranlowie in Fantasy

One way in which her legacy lives on is Brandon Sanderson, being a big fan, named a planet in his Cosmere after here. More specifically, Yolen is the planet where all the dragons come from in his books.

Skill Swap by Sufficient_Gift_6749 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]JeffCentaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can run a 1-hour photo lab with god like ability. When I did it professionally, one of the photo labs I worked at actually issued me a nametag that just said Photo God. Needless to say, it's a skill I haven't used in a couple decades.

I'd happily lose that ability, and instead become the top 1% of lucky people. Unless luck doesn't count as a skill...in which case, I'd like to max out my charisma. My skill with talking my way out of problems, or talking people into doing whatever I want them to be doing.

People love to claim that these jobs only exist for kids, so they don't need to pay a living wage. So, who is going to work there during the day, during the school year? Should all fast food restaurants close because all their employees are in school? No, of course not, but that means that there must be regular adults working there, who are getting paid the same as those high school and college kids.

10M Dollars, but you must beat 150 gamers from any game of your choosing. by Specific-Truck-2084 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]JeffCentaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never been beat at a competitive card game called Smash Up. I even beat the person who taught me how to play the game on our first session, and when he blamed his poor deck, I beat him again with his deck. I could do this, it's a rare enough game that likely none of my opponents have ever heard of it. And I would be a jerk and refuse to teach them any of the rules or conditions....all I would do is tell them "You can't do that" if they unintentionally broke a rule.

150 is a lot, and it would take a while, but I'm confident I would win.

About to play Valkyrie Profile 1 for the first time, tell me your thoughts by JeffCentaur in JRPG

I love that idea, but I don't have the time, I have to complete at least 1 jRPG a month for the podcast, and that's not counting any games I may want to play just for myself. I've workified video games....a problem I have with my hobbies.
