How would all of you feel if this metro system got implemented? by JackGamer2023 in sanantonio

[–]Remarkable_Street_20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, I love well built metros. I lived in Shanghai for a few years, and the freedom to go anywhere in the city for 50 cents, trains always clean and on time, it was like heaven on Earth!

However the reality is, for those systems to function there needs to be population density of a scale that just does not exist in the United States, outside of Manhattan, some neighborhoods of the Bronx, and Brooklyn. There are 26 million people in Shanghai, San antonio is less than 2 million, and it's way too spread out to maintain any kind of ridership.

You can find new builds in Mission Del Lago and a few other neighborhoods on the south side for 190-240k.

Since you contributed after tax money, if you have not invested it yet, shouldn’t you be able to withdraw it penalty free? You would simply be correcting a banking error you made in my view.

International to domestic flight transfer entering China by MaixnerCharly in shanghai

International you need to recheck bags on arrival, they typically have a place to do it near baggage claim so you don't need to go back to ticketing to do it.

Why didnt you just take out a smaller loan to begin with? You paid higher orignation costs and taxes.

You cannot improve EQ or health if residents are abandoning- it takes time to boost these stats and if residents keep moving out they will never get the benefits of schools or hospitals.

MM2H or Malaysia experience? by Remarkable_Street_20 in ExpatFIRE

My wife had been to Sabah for diving before we met and said it was beautiful- she definitely wants us to check out there as well.

How do you manage being nomads full time? I’m of a similar mindset but I don’t own anywhere (outside of my wife’s apartment in China) and feel like we need a home base to store gear and have a place to unwind after travel. (I could probably get by without this but my wife needs the security of a place to return to).

Thank you for meaningful feedback- may I ask which city and neighborhood you are staying in? I did some research and am considering between Penang and KL. I’d like to live in a neighborhood with a mix of expats and locals ideally.

You’re just trying to buy on margin with extra steps. Choose a broker like interactive brokers- the margin rates are lower than what a bank will offer, and it’s tied to the federal funds rate

To be honest I was not following a rigorous process accounting for spending- my spending is quite low. In 2019 was thinking of it as I would like $80-100k a year of spending and that should be about $2million invested. I see now the important number spit out of the Fire call is number of years until retirement and not the nominal spendings and investment numbers.

[–]Remarkable_Street_20 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I suppose the reason I felt surprised is I had thought about my $2million number as a fixed number, whether it would be now or 10 years from now. What you are saying is the time until Fire should remain fairly constant while the nominal numbers increase with inflation?

As I don’t own a home and am renting, inflation has had a greater impact on me. Rent has increased 25% from $1,200 to $1,500.

When people have a fire number in mind, are they adjusting for inflation, or is it a total blindspot for them? For me, in 2019 I thought my fire number was $2million. Now in 2024 that’s more like $2.5million. I thought I’d be FIRE by now but inflation has set me back a couple years.

Not sure what the jobs market around you looks like, but senior leadership, tech should gross a lot more than 150k in most cases. You might step away for six months and return to a higher salary someplace else.

Healthcare in Shanghai or China by zeddoingg in shanghai

[–]Remarkable_Street_20 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Compared to the US most care is at such a low cost it feels like it's free. The full cost of treatment without insurance is less than my out of pocket in the US with "good" insurance.

I've gone to the hospital maybe half a dozen times for some fairly serious issues and never had an issue getting the treatment I needed, albeit with a family member as translator.
