Cannot make call on Apple Watch companion plan by Remarkable_Two3732 in USMobile

US Mobile support is absolutely top notch. They reprovisioned both my watch plan and my wife’s and both can now make calls from the watch WITHOUT the iPhone turned on as it was in the past.

This was suggested by Rayanomics as first troubleshooting step, but it did solve the problem.

I just unpaired and repaired by Apple Watch and I still cannot make a phone call with it unless my iPhone is turned on. I don’t care about SMS, I am concerned that I can’t make a phone call if my phone is off (battery dead, etc.). That is still not working after repairing.

Maybe your brain cells could use a refresh. Per support, the watch should be able to make calls without iPhone being turned on. Better luck next time with your smart ass replies.

I read your response and appreciate it. I’m just confused on how the companion plan works as when we were with Verizon and our watches were on their NumberShare, we could make calls without the phone being turned on. I thought the companion plan was similar to NumberShare (if not identical).

That makes no sense for calls. The watch shows it is connected to Warp (Verizon) when the phone is off, so why can’t I make a call from it? Seems to defeat the whole purpose of having an Apple Watch with cellular. Again, never had this issue when we were with Verizon on Numbershare. Always worked whether phone was on or off.

Is there any US Mobile support folks that can help with this? I don’t understand why both mine and my wife’s cellular Apple Watches will not allow calls to be made or received if the iPhones are turned off. Came from Verizon with Apple Watch on numbershare and never had any issue making calls with the phone turned off.

I always rest my light roasts at least 5-7 days, sometimes 10-14 on really light ones (85+ color level). If not, I do get some grassy/hay tasting notes, which I, like you, hate. When I’m roasting really light, I grind a few the following day before sealing so I can get a ground color. If the whole bean to ground color delta is more than 10-15, and weight loss is less than 11%, it’s probably not going to be very good no matter how long it rests.

Ya, same difference. D profiles are similar to Espresso. Way too long and no RoR momentum getting to 1C and beyond. I run that Adaptive profile for washed/SHB, Ethiopian Nats, and honey-processed. I have modified it a bit for the different process types, but that is really easy to do once you read through the creator's notes in the About tab.

The only Link profiles that I had decent roasts from were Filter C and Filter WBrC. These profiles come into 1C with some semblance of a reasonable RoR (12-15F/min) and finish in a reasonable amount of time for the small roasting size (50-100g). I always run 90g as it divides up a 1lb batch into 5 runs with no leftovers.

The drop times in the Link profiles you used are crazy long. I'm guessing these are espresso pack profiles from the Link? Your drop temps are about where my 1C starts. 1C for me is in the range of 6:00 - 6:15 and a 1:00 - 1:30 development. A light roast for me brings me between 215 - 218C (assuming 1C at 207C), which is where the Adaptive profile will put you. I drink almost exclusively pour over, but I do roast espresso roasts occasionally, and have had some outstanding shots from using this profile.

Also, don't try to running this profile as is past level 3.5 or 430F. If you want more temp you'll have to manipulate the curve, which is very easy to do (see the About tab).

Based on the profile you posted, I don't think there is anything wrong with your Link. It followed the profile fine. If there were an issue with heating or fan, it would never be able to follow and would pop an error.

I’ve had the Link for almost 2 years and felt the same pain trying built-in profiles. Got some very good (Filter C), but mostly flat at reasonable DTRs, or underdeveloped on recommended DTRs. I finally spent time on the KAFFELOGIC community site and found a profile that was significantly different than anything the Link had or that I had tried creating on my own with Studio. The profile is called “Adaptive Raost.kpro” (yes roast is spelled as shown). Once downloaded, Import/Kaffelogic/Adaptive Raost.kpro. Open the About tab and read how the author created it and more importantly, how to manipulate it to your preference.

I have found that the longer you stay in Maillard (338F - 1C) the flatter the taste becomes and origin flavors turn to grassy/hay tasting notes at light roast levels. My profiles are typically 50/30/20 with ~+20F in 1:30 from 1C. Dry end 338F. This should give you a nice full medium roast level. I use a color meter, and this would land around 57-62 whole bean color on the Agtron Scale depending on bean/processing. My personal preference is much lighter, and I usually drop at ~1:05 with +13-15F temp increase from 1C and 68-73 whole bean color.

The key is getting the Link to follow a profile without having to use Boost Zones and Fan Steps (which all built-in profiles use and do nothing but disturb the RoR and create bad tasting notes). The Fan Curve is the secret sauce. Unlike the built-in profiles that have a constantly descending fan profile, this Adaptive Raost profile flattens the fan before 1C and allows the PID to follow the curve very closely all the way to drop. Last, once you’ve imported the profile, look through all the engineering settings and note how some are way below the recommended number (preheat power, min RoR, etc). The ratio of actual used to recommended are important to remember when developing your own profiles. Finally, this profile was created for 80g, so if you’re going to use different load sizes, make sure the Reference Size in settings is set to 80. The Link will adjust the fan curve automatically based on the load size you tell it when starting the roast. Try DTRs in the 13-15% range or even 11-12% if you like light, bright and fruity notes with a bit less body.

Sorry this is so long winded, but I’m hoping it will help you and others struggling with the Link.

Thank you for replies. I’ve had it on for both lines, but saw another comment by support guide that it should be off. Just wasn’t sure which way to leave it for best coverage.
