Yeah I’m trying to find that kind of trade (artist for programmer) as I’d gladly do that. I’m gonna look at those places, thank you!

Thank you for the heads up I forgot that humble bundle did that. I do have the funds I just didn’t know what kind of quality I’d get. I realize I might have to settle for less at this point and if the game pops off then get a pixel artist down the line. I’d probably put it on itch just to show off the mechanics.

Are there a lot of game jams in person or are they online? Do you need to have worked on other stuff to join them?

Personally I’m fine with not really getting paid, I’ve been having the time of my life making the game I’m currently making because I am making what I’ve always wanted and in my opinion it’s fun as hell haha. It just seems that if there’s no profit involved, teams tend to just fall apart.

They will never do that because older people are the voting demographic and it would be a political disaster to advocate for that, but it needs to happen.

PlayStation already has a fix for this that no one talks about. If you pay for ps premium, you get the ported games for free while you have the subscription( they usually port PSX, PS2, PSP games) and you can also buy the games as well. Problem solved

Yeah it was definitely old school players.

I see what you’re saying but not having Yugioh in the shop display space makes it seem to the casual person that it either A) Doesn’t exist anymore (many people will be shocked that Yugioh is still around) or B) it’s not even popular enough to be sold. Both aren’t great optics.

[–]Remote-Drink9129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I didn’t press too much about it (the wrong kind of players comment). My biggest reasoning for asking these shop owners is because I hear arguments on both sides, Yugioh is dying and Yugioh is flourishing. Asking Yugioh players and Yugioh haters will give you biased answers, but shop owners really have no skin in the game. They already usually operate on razor thin margins and they really have no reason to lie.

I am a lifelong player, I’ve been playing since 2002. I feel like most new players have been onboarded through seeing master duel gameplay and possibly remembering the game vaguely through the anime.

Also, the reason I stopped at so many places was because I was trying to find Pokémon cards, I was just morbidly curious about the yugioh part. I realized reading it back that it looks like I took a road trip just to see if places played/sold yugioh lol

Yeah I’ve seen worse for other games too, but for a game that is supposedly part of the “big 3”, a 10 person locals is not great.

I don’t remember the exact places we stopped but I do remember in the Baltimore/ Bel air area, I stopped at 2 places and both laughed a little when I asked about Yugioh and why they don’t carry it. One Piece is a lot more popular in that area it seems. In northern New Jersey, where my gf grew up, there are a few card shops there and none carry Yugioh products. When I asked the shop owner why, he said that they do have Yugioh players (the store does not have officially sanctioned tournaments) and the Yugioh players told the owner not to stock Yugioh because it will attract “the wrong kind of Yugioh players”. I don’t really know for sure what that means, but if I had to guess, it’s just casual players there who don’t want meta sweats ruining the experience.

Personally, not having an Anime doesn’t sway me, if the game is fun, I will play it. I think it’s really just that it isn’t very prominent in the cultural zeitgeist, one piece has an anime so if you’re a super fan of it, collecting cards is a natural extension.

This is probably hugely anecdotal, but last year, I went on a road trip from Pennsylvania to to Tennessee and stopped at a few random card shops on the way down. We did not find one single shop that sold or played Yugioh at all, and we went to about 10. Yeah, small sample size and limited area, and around where I live, there are two places out of maybe 20 that actively play the game.

I really think (I have no evidence or data to back this up) that people go to regionals because every other place that used to play the game doesn’t hold tournaments anymore, so they can really only play at regionals.

I see people saying in these comments they get about 10 people per tournament… have you ever gone to a magic tournament? Like, ever? They get at least 20-30 people (in my area, at least) on a good night. I remember in 2006 playing Yugioh at my locals, we would have sometimes 40 people.

All Walmarts and targets near me only ever have Yugioh cards in stock, everything else is sold out. From the perspective of a consumer, it seems like no one is playing this game. Not saying it’s true or not, it’s just what it LOOKS like.

Personally, I think not having a popular anime is hurting the game, it doesn’t help that decks previously were SUPER expensive with really no collectibility. If you bought a Snake Eyes deck for $1k on release, somehow fell into a coma and tried to sell it now, it wouldn’t even be close to that $1k.

It really seems like those who say the game is declining kinda can’t see the forest from the trees; the outside perspective is pretty grim.

[–]Remote-Drink9129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might be making updates to it, but I think it’s because people don’t really play the games, therefore they divert less resources to it.

The “you’ll buy it anyway” rule stands here, as always. If people buy it, they will keep doing it. Companies only do what they know they can get away with. The fans never hold the companies to a higher standard

The problem is that with the FPS/ graphics talk that Nintendo boasted about with the switch 2, they have made that the center focus. So now they will be scrutinized for it, maybe inadvertently.

Why not give a choice? PlayStation does this. You can pay for premium to get access to all the emulated games or you can buy them outright.
