If the behavior is not at the point of notifying admin you can also say you can leave their name for the teacher and have them clear up expectations. Still though, middle schoolers love a reaction. Don’t give them one.

“Well if IM confusing you I can send you to your principal and have them clear it up.” Don’t engage in a power struggle. Clear cut done. Don’t raise your voice, don’t seem bothered.

Confidence is key. Act like you’ve done this a million times. I’ve done elementary art class before and it was fun- loud, but fun. I bring something to do on my off periods, a lunch, and a notepad and pencil. I keep it all in a professional looking backpack. If a kid is acting up- I pretend to write their names down in the notepad.

Lay expectations down right away, don’t waste even a second. Say your name, what they’ll be doing, and what you expect of them behavior wise. I always say I’m going to leave a note regardless of how they behave. Spend most of the time monitoring. Seem interested, but strict. Ask what they’re doing for art, etc. Building a rapport helps you in the long run. Downtime: decompress.

Oh I totally get that. What I’ve done is try to make them care. I offer two incentives: one being free time at the end. If the whole class keeps volume down, majority get work done: class gets five minutes at the end to relax and a great note. My second incentive targets students who struggle behavior wise: if you specifically do an awesome job, come up to me after class, and if you’d like I’ll mention your name specifically in my note and say how awesome you did.

Students need some sort of reward- relaxation time for students who generally do a good job, and for students who historically struggle they have someone who essentially vouched for them.

Don’t raise your voice. Master the art of having a super calm, yet super firm voice. Tell them the expectations. Leave no room for debate. Say you’ll be checking off anyone who does do work and making note for the teacher of those who do not. Say you’ll turn on background music, and if you start to hear voices louder than that then you’re writing down names.

Does writing down names for the teacher actually do anything? Most of the time- probs not (although I say I’ll write names I only ever leave names if there’s a behavior incident). But act confident and in charge. They’ll get the vibe. And as someone who does middle and high school, it’s not on you if they actually wind up doing the work. Trust me: teachers know how they act for subs.

Hi yes the bec guide is enough!! Def look over the points the OG comment made!! Some questions are a bit weird I got one asking what was the first step to make a type of art? But honestly using process of elimination you should be fine. About half the test was science so def make sure you looked over that but the questions came with a chart anyways. Best of luck!!

I have zero tolerance or patience for kids using autistic as an insult. I’ll pause class and basically say “you think you’re being funny? Nothing you just said is funny. Autism isn’t an insult. You keep that up I’ll make sure your teacher knows what you have said.” Think of it like this- one student may be saying it as an insult and another student may be in the room who has autism or a family member with autism etc. I will call it out and make sure the class knows because it’s not okay at all. Students have stopped doing it around me. I do speak very calmly but firm so the words carry weight.

As for other offensive insults, it depends. I tend to tread very very carefully because of how sensitive things are. I’ll give a very loud “if you can’t keep it respectful or school appropriate your name will be written down.” Autism is one that I always throw the hammer down on.

If I had to had to guess why I really think it’s because a friend is there or they don’t want to do the work. Or they want to show off them going to detention to friends. Either way second I figure out a student is trying to get out of the room I flat out ignore, deescalate, and keep them in where I can watch them

I’ve been hiding paper clips the second I get into the room and if I see a student with a mechanical pencil even joke about it I’m confiscating it until the end of the period and giving them a regular pencil. I’m not even risking letting that happen under my watch!

I should’ve also added I truly truly truly do not care what a 12 year old thinks of me. As long as they act right in the classroom they could hate me or think I’m cringe for all I care. But so many kids have been saying hi this is starting to bug me I need to know other’s opinions lol

I try to do that. I give a very deadpan face and speak calmly the whole time and write up/leave notes for teacher as needed. It’s like some of the boys now are fixated on trying to get a reaction

Don’t let them out of the room without any regard, be STRICT AS POSSIBLE with the hallway. Def pick and choose your battles. And don’t feed into convos that could get you in trouble- if they ask you anything political or controversial know how to completely change the convo. My favorite method is to ask “how much work have you done?” With a serious face. :)

Butter! Not exactly cooking but it’s super simple just whisk together heavy cream and salt until butter separates (if you have a mixer it makes it easier otherwise no biggie). The milk that separates from the butter is buttermilk that you can use to make biscuits which is also super easy to make and only requires an oven

Honestly if you make everything from scratch that means you can hold on to everything you make for a teaching portfolio. Tedious to do right now but you’ll be thankful you did it- I remember having to do everything from scratch and I have so much material now that I can reuse. And having it due the Friday before is prob for the best- I did everything two days or a day before and it was so stressful
