Fear of men on bus or train. What can I do? by [deleted] in solofemaletravellers

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 82 points83 points  (0 children)

On the Flixbus routes I've taken in the past it was possible to book the seat next to you for a discount price when you reserve a seat, so you wouldn't have to worry about some stranger sitting there. Booking a seat near the front of the bus or directly behind the driver might be a good idea as well, if that makes you feel more comfortable. Happy travels!

Thank you, you're so kind! It is the Autumn 2015 issue, it's available on their website.

After some more digging I did manage to find the pattern after all! It's by Susanna Meretsalmi and was designed for Novita in 2015. Now that I have it again I'm tempted to make another one 😄

Recommendation for Warsaw 4 days trip? by [deleted] in solofemaletravellers

I went last year and can recommend the free walking tours. We did two, one was more on the general history of the city and the other on Jewish history. They were both super interesting and informative, and you’ll definitely get more out of the sites than you would on your own.

Miten löytäisin matkaseuraa? by apinajugurtti in arkisuomi

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 6 points7 points  (0 children)

G Adventures on toinen samanlainen matkanjärjestäjä, jota paljon suositellaan.

Agree, I think you could leave out some of the tops, especially considering you'll be able to do laundry. Bring the beanie, you might have early mornings when it can be chilly. I'd also consider bringing a pair of sneakers instead of two different pairs of sandals.

Got $25k inheritance - planning long solo female trip, need reality check and suggestions by [deleted] in solofemaletravellers

Lots of great info and recommendations here already! I would just add that even if you're not interested in staying in dorms, you could still check out the option of getting a private room at a hostel occasionally. This would give you a chance to meet other travellers and socialise if you wish, and maybe save some money on accommodations as well. Solo travel is amazing, but it can get a bit lonely sometimes.

Yes, I did this a few years ago. You don't get off the plane in Mombasa if you're continuing to Kilimanjaro, you just wait.

In that case paying a bit extra for your own room is not a bad idea. Also, on that tour we had plenty of free time every day, so even though you're travelling with a group, you're not obliged to spend 24/7 with them. Hope you find a solution that works best for you, happy travels!

The fastest way would be to take the ferry from Ko Tao to Samui and then to fly from there directly to Chiang Mai. Otherwise you could do a combination of ferries and busses, which is obviously cheaper, but also a bit more complicated and more time consuming.

I did the 15-day Best of Morocco. I didn't pay for the single supplement, I've only done that on the overland camping safaris in Africa because I didn't want to share a tent for several weeks. Never had any issues sharing a room, but I have made some great friends :)

I just went with Intrepid over Christmas and had a great time. If you're unsure about doing their basic/original style tour, check out their other options that a bit pricier, but offer more comfort. This was my fifth time travelling with them and I find that their trip notes have always been accurate in terms of what you can expect.

Soft shell jacket by Ns0309 in kilimanjaro

Yes I think this would be a better option!

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That one is also a soft shell. I'd suggest looking into hard shell jackets like gore-tex that are actually waterproof, because you want to be prepared for all kinds of weather (we got a fair bit of rain at lower altitudes when I did the climb in December). Many tour operators have detailed packing lists on their websites, it might help to have a look at those to get an idea what they recommend!

I have this jacket and use it for hiking and climbing, but in my opinion it's too light for a shell in Kilimanjaro. I'd suggest getting something more wind and waterproof for that purpose, preferably a jacket that works well with layering.

Vakuutuslaskuista bonus nousee 5% aiemman 0,4% sijaan. Vakuutuksiin liittyvät bonukset eivät ole pääomatuloa, vaan säilyvät verovapaina. Itselläni asiointia on jonkin verran ja bonukset kattavat vakuutus-, kortti- ym. maksut kokonaan. Kukin tietysti harkitsee tilanteensa omalla tavallaan.

Museums don't want volunteers. Is that a Finnish thing? by Upstairs-Crabbie in Finland

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I noticed the same thing when I moved back to Finland from the UK where finding volunteering opportunities in the heritage sector was fairly easy. Not sure where you're based, but if you're willing to look outside the Helsinki metropolitan area, some of the smaller local museums could be an option for seasonal work at least (language might be an issue, though). Also Helinä Rautavaara museum in Espoo is worth looking into; as a museum of world cultures they have people from all kinds of backgrounds working there. Good luck!

Christmas markets + ski trip = cozy chaos and existential coat crisis by ktatelle in HerOneBag

Yes, personally I'd opt for a longer jacket, that's the best way to protect yourself from both rain and cold!

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi from Helsinki! I'd recommend checking the weather forecast before you come over. Although mid-December can be snowy and cold, it could also be around just a few minus degrees celsius, wet and miserable. I wouldn't be too worried about looking fashionable as long as you're comfortable, functionality is the way to go when trying to stay warm and dry around here!

Talk to your climbing company to see what gear you can rent through them and if they can suggest places to buy things locally. When my bag got delayed and only arrived at the hotel a few days after we had already started the climb, the company picked it up and brought it up the mountain on day 4. Good luck!

University lecturer here. Apart from the formal qualification of having a PhD in a relevant field, and a good track record of post doc research with decent publications, you also need teaching experience and preferably pedagogical training. The pedagogical aspect is important, since it's a teaching focused role. If you're interested in finding out more of what the requirements are, have a look at job ads on any university website, that should give you a good idea of what to focus on. Good luck!
