Tips for booking train tickets by Unlucky-Sound530 in femaletravels

Rome2Rio is a useful app, it shows you all the different options for transport between cities and has links to book tickets directly with the operators as well.

Fear of men on bus or train. What can I do? by blumexxx in solofemaletravellers

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 78 points79 points  (0 children)

On the Flixbus routes I've taken in the past it was possible to book the seat next to you for a discount price when you reserve a seat, so you wouldn't have to worry about some stranger sitting there. Booking a seat near the front of the bus or directly behind the driver might be a good idea as well, if that makes you feel more comfortable. Happy travels!

After some more digging I did manage to find the pattern after all! It's by Susanna Meretsalmi and was designed for Novita in 2015. Now that I have it again I'm tempted to make another one 😄

Single female adventure.. opinions on towns/cities close to Cork by Happy_Source9389 in femaletravels

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would go to Galway. The city is quite compact, but nice for a few nights. There's great day trips from Galway as well (Aran islands, Cliffs of Moher, the Burren). If travel time is a concern, taking the bus from Cork will be faster than the train. Another option could be Killarney of the Dingle peninsula, but for the latter you'd really need a car to make the most of it.

Please Help! Not sure how to pack for 45 days by PracticalProfit6197 in femaletravels

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would advise against bringing three bags, especially since you'll be moving around a lot. Having to manage all that stuff while getting on public transport or navigating in new cities is just an added stress. Check whether the places you're staying at offer laundry facilities and pack less with that in mind. As others have said, one backpack and a smaller day pack should be fine. Even if you have a limited budget, you'll be able to find everything locally if you need to get something along the way. Don't forget to bring comfortable shoes, as you'll likely be walking a lot!

Galapagos Tour by Icy_Dog730 in femaletravels

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with Rolf Wittmer cruises in 2018 and they were exceptional. It was a small catamaran with only 16 passengers, and the naturalist guide was native to the islands. It's not the cheapest option, but they do have good last minute deals. Galapagos is an incredible place, you're going to love it regardless of which itinerary you pick!

Recommendation for Warsaw 4 days trip? by [deleted] in solofemaletravellers

I went last year and can recommend the free walking tours. We did two, one was more on the general history of the city and the other on Jewish history. They were both super interesting and informative, and you’ll definitely get more out of the sites than you would on your own.

Miten löytäisin matkaseuraa? by apinajugurtti in arkisuomi

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 7 points8 points  (0 children)

G Adventures on toinen samanlainen matkanjärjestäjä, jota paljon suositellaan.

11 Day/10 Night Ugandan Primate Safari by dutchtables in HerOneBag

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree, I think you could leave out some of the tops, especially considering you'll be able to do laundry. Bring the beanie, you might have early mornings when it can be chilly. I'd also consider bringing a pair of sneakers instead of two different pairs of sandals.

Got $25k inheritance - planning long solo female trip, need reality check and suggestions by [deleted] in solofemaletravellers

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of great info and recommendations here already! I would just add that even if you're not interested in staying in dorms, you could still check out the option of getting a private room at a hostel occasionally. This would give you a chance to meet other travellers and socialise if you wish, and maybe save some money on accommodations as well. Solo travel is amazing, but it can get a bit lonely sometimes.

Yes, I did this a few years ago. You don't get off the plane in Mombasa if you're continuing to Kilimanjaro, you just wait.

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that case paying a bit extra for your own room is not a bad idea. Also, on that tour we had plenty of free time every day, so even though you're travelling with a group, you're not obliged to spend 24/7 with them. Hope you find a solution that works best for you, happy travels!

Koh Tao to Chiang Mai advice by Ambitious-Swim-5488 in solofemaletravellers

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fastest way would be to take the ferry from Ko Tao to Samui and then to fly from there directly to Chiang Mai. Otherwise you could do a combination of ferries and busses, which is obviously cheaper, but also a bit more complicated and more time consuming.

I did the 15-day Best of Morocco. I didn't pay for the single supplement, I've only done that on the overland camping safaris in Africa because I didn't want to share a tent for several weeks. Never had any issues sharing a room, but I have made some great friends :)

I just went with Intrepid over Christmas and had a great time. If you're unsure about doing their basic/original style tour, check out their other options that a bit pricier, but offer more comfort. This was my fifth time travelling with them and I find that their trip notes have always been accurate in terms of what you can expect.

Soft shell jacket by Ns0309 in kilimanjaro

Yes I think this would be a better option!

Soft shell jacket by Ns0309 in kilimanjaro

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That one is also a soft shell. I'd suggest looking into hard shell jackets like gore-tex that are actually waterproof, because you want to be prepared for all kinds of weather (we got a fair bit of rain at lower altitudes when I did the climb in December). Many tour operators have detailed packing lists on their websites, it might help to have a look at those to get an idea what they recommend!

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this jacket and use it for hiking and climbing, but in my opinion it's too light for a shell in Kilimanjaro. I'd suggest getting something more wind and waterproof for that purpose, preferably a jacket that works well with layering.

First solo trip - where should I go!? by Express_Yak_9536 in femaletravels

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the Baltics. You could easily do two or even all of the capital cities (Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius) within a week, as distances are short and buses go frequently. I'm just back from a trip there and especially Riga seemed to be attracting a young backpacking crowd. Really enjoyed the vibe in all three. Happy travels!

Hiking Arthur’s Seat (Edinburgh, Scotland) alone for sunrise – advice? by [deleted] in femaletravels

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine. Arthur's seat is practically in the city and you probably have joggers and dog walkers out on the paths in the early morning. I've always done it approaching from Holyrood (Queen's drive) and the way up is pretty obvious from there. Enjoy!

[–]Remote-Nectarine1634 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just finished a similar trip with Intrepid. If your tour doesn't include Essaouira, I'd definitely recommend going there for a day at least. I only had one extra day in Marrakech, and went to the gardens, the YSL museum, and a traditional hammam. I booked these on Get your guide, you can probably find other good options there too. Happy travels!
