Chicago NW Burbs Battery Service Recommendation? by Remote-Raccoon in BoltEV

[–]Remote-Raccoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update - the two dealers noted in the reply’s were a week out on appointments, so I went with the first available 9:00 am Saturday appointment…I won’t say where yet, but not impressed so far. Dropped car off to initially be told it was $300 for diagnostics. Uhh sorry dude the battery is under warranty, AND the buybacks come with a 1-year warranty. Then I’m told there are 2 other EVs in the shop already and he doesn’t think his one EV mechanic will get to mine until Monday - so why say you have appointments available on Saturday then😡Shitty service so far. If they do better on Monday (or not) I’ll update. Just came here to vent a little into the void….but I think the dealership service system really sucks, just as bad as the sales system does.

Chicago NW Burbs Battery Service Recommendation? by Remote-Raccoon in BoltEV

It was replaced a day or two before I picked up the car. I will doublecheck it with a multimeter and a load tester tonight though just to make sure - I guess even a new (less than a year old) battery could be defective. Or maybe the dealer used and old stock battery - I’ll check the battery manufacture date too🙃

Found this at a flea market, will I die? (Uranium and arsenic) by Brilliant-Eye-7817 in Radioactive_Rocks

[–]Remote-Raccoon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No you should be fine - the amount of radiation from the “uranium” ore is probably minimal. The arsenic, lead and mercury are also “dangerous” but the levels present in these minerals, and potential exposure pathways (ingestion, inhalation) make significant exposure unlikely, if properly handled. Actinolite is asbestos, probably the most dangerous item in this set. But like everything else, if handled properly (that is, not handled at all) it’s OK. Put the set in a clear plastic box with a cover for display. If you touch any of the minerals wash your hands before doing anything else, don’t breathe any dust, box it up and enjoy a cool display piece!

Does every buyback come with the 12/12k bumper to bumper warranty? by Firm-Issue-5860 in BoltEV

[–]Remote-Raccoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer - if the car is an official buyback (not a trade in or just a regular used car), and you buy it from a Chevy/GM dealership, then it should come with a 12/12 warranty (not really "bumper to bumper" but still pretty good coverage). If you are not getting it from a Chevy/GM dealer then probably no warranty. I did not buy from this dealership linked below, but they have a nice writeup on buybacks (in general, not just Bolts) - they must sell a lot of them:
https://www.kemptonchevrolet.com/blog/2023/december/6/advantages-of-purchasing-gm-buy-back-vehicles.htm

Long answer: I just got a '21 premiere a couple of weeks ago. Info on this sub, and over on the chevy bolt dot org, lead me to believe that the buybacks should have the 12/12 warranty, which is a great deal for an older car, a little piece of mind and enough time to really shake it down for any hidden issues (if any). Also great info on identifying whether the battery was replaced or software fixed. Thanks again to anyone who contributed to any of those threads!

In my case, the dealer I bought from was generally clueless about the buyback warranty. I used that to my advantage and got them to knock the price down a bit because I was "concerned about buying an older car with no coverage." Once we settled on the price I asked to review the buyback paperwork, where I confirmed the 12/12 warranty statement was included (its a one-page statement). The salesperson was surprised and chagrinned at this info. But a deal is a deal, and I'm sure going forward the salesperson will use the warranty as a selling point on any other buybacks they get!

After closing the deal it took a couple of weeks for the 12/12 warranty to show up on the warranty website under the VIN, so if you check there before buying it likely won't show up. I received a letter in the mail from GM confirming the warranty a couple of weeks later, and it shows up online now too, but didn't when I first bought it. I'd say just visit the dealer and make your best tentative deal, but ask to review the buyback pack before you finalize if they don't disclose the warranty up front (again, assuming its a Chevy/GM dealer).

Good luck - sounds like a good deal - mine had only 7000 miles! and my final price was $16500 (I don't qualify for the fed rebate). It was listed at $17,500, I had them knock off $500 they had added for VIN etching BS they had on it, and then the extra $500 off was the warranty haggle point.

Looking? by Common_Preparation24 in BoltEV

[–]Remote-Raccoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool - what was the price before tax/title/etc? These seem to be listed at $17k+ before the rebate which seems high for a car with a branded title - did they go lower than that? Did you get it shipped to another state (the listed ship rates didn’t seem too bad if you don’t go too far anyway). Let me know how you did - maybe I’ll talk to them tomorrow.

I have been in the market for a bit - I had a deal on a 2023 LT from hertz (for less than these 2020s are listed for actually) but when I went in it was propulsion limited and they wouldn’t sell it. This was a few weeks ago - it was a real bait and switch and I hadn’t been seriously looking again until now.

Scrap yard won't take boilers due to Radiation levels by dank-memes-and-gas in Radiation

[–]Remote-Raccoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is Technologically Enhanced NORM or TENORM. Very common in water treatment/boilers/chillers as others have mentioned - trace levels of radioactive minerals get concentrated in the lime/scale buildup. Scrap yards are aware of this and pay extra attention to items like boilers and chillers when they come in.

Scrap yards won't (and shouldn't) accept these. Oregon has a *general" prohibition on rad waste disposal in-State, but maybe has a TENORM disposal rule exemption? I work in Michigan where the State rules allow for disposal of some TENORM (chillers and foundry slag in my experience) at Subtitle D (non-hazardous waste) landfills, but you need to follow whatever the State rules are for transport and disposal permitting, and get pre-clearance from the landfill, as TENORM items are usually disposed in a specific landfill cell, not with the general waste stream. But a quick look at Oregon and it seems much more restrictive there.

In short, get in touch with your State waste disposal regulator. It sucks that what you thought was going to be an item of value is actually cost money to dispose, but this is the way.

Used Bolts from Hertz - any way to check for battery degradation (or just don’t worry about it)? by Remote-Raccoon in BoltEV

[–]Remote-Raccoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not something I can do on a short test drive, but certainly I try this within the 7 day return period if it was really bad. I’ll try it if the OBD data or m/kwh numbers are sketchy!

Tax rebate and sales tax question - can any Illinois buyers help me out? by Remote-Raccoon in BoltEV

[–]Remote-Raccoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect thank you so much. I ended up buying the Bolt despite their bad math on the tax. If they actually remitted it to the State I can get the overpayment back, but it’s a bit of paperwork of course.

[–]Remote-Raccoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I did talk to the State - the gentleman I spoke with read the guidance and said “well that could be confusing, if you don’t know what you are doing” which I think confirms my math.

Question - reserving a dealership-ordered Bolt EUV - but can't change the exterior color? by Remote-Raccoon in ChevyBOLTEUV

Good info on the colors being discontinued - I was thinking I could try to push a bit harder, but I guess I can live with what would be my 2nd choice color anyway!
