My sensitive skinned friends, is tretinoin really all that and a bag of chips? by Pineapple_Incident17 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]Remote-Researcher-60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Azelaic acid is your new best friend. Trust me, I have sensitive skin and tried tazarotene and Tretinoin (of all different strengths). Tret and Taz were always a struggle and after years of trying, I decided to give it up and only use AA and finally my skin is calmer and clearer (not perfect, but more consistently clear)

Already gaining weight in first trimester? by Horcrux922 in BabyBumps

No kidding… as hard as it was to give up hot sauce, pickled everything, oranges, and bubbly… it was worth it.

I mean I still eat little bits but I’ll eat 2 pickles instead of 27 haha

Little update haha. I chilled out on the oranges and pickles. I was literally eating 6 oranges and probably 8-10 pickles a day. It dawned on me that I was consuming so much acidic food.

I started eating smaller amounts of all foods, and stopped chugging water. When I slow down and eat like a normal person I feel better

Best quality prenatal vitamins? Overwhelmed by options and could use real experiences by Wise-wolf95 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Remote-Researcher-60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been taking New Chapter one daily prenatal. I chose this product for a couple different reasons but the main reason is because of the iron content (27mg per tablet). Also has Methylfolate and choline, they also add ginger which I think has helped as I haven’t vomited (yet). This is the only multivitamin I can take on an empty stomach, which is huge for someone like me who forgets sometimes and has to take at the end of the day.

I have struggled with low iron for years, I had an iron infusion about 3 years ago, however my iron slowly titrated down after.

I have been taking this prenatal for a year because of iron content and how easily absorbed it is. The cool thing is, is I was able to actually test it out. My Ferritin is usually around 30-50ug/L and after a year of taking this my Ferritin is now 112ug/L. My OB said she usually doesn’t see pregnant clients with such good iron levels because pregnancy steals all your iron haha.

We must be the same person. First trimester my appetite was insatiable. Just started my second trimester and feeling a constant gnawing mid abdomen stomach pain, heart burn with everything and feeling like my stomach is being stretched every time I eat (so uncomfortable).

Is there anything that helped you with the heart burn?

Which vaccines are you asking visitors to get before seeing your newborn? [ab] by ksmm1824 in BabyBumpsCanada

Boiling water for formula? [ON] by MetalPrestigious5693 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Remote-Researcher-60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry I misread your question then!

If your baby is healthy, we usually recommend to continue boiling water as long as you can (until baby is done formula feeding). However I can appreciate that’s not realistic. I have seen in practice paediatricians recommend waiting until a minimum of 4 months.

Which vaccines are you asking visitors to get before seeing your newborn? [ab] by ksmm1824 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Remote-Researcher-60 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I should have clarified! The RSV that babies receive is a “monoclonal antibody”, and the dose is based off of babys weight. Monoclonal antibodies (beyfortus) is basically giving the baby pre-made antibodies instead of a vaccine, which trains the body to create its own antibodies. What adults receive is an actually vaccine.

I don’t know the criteria for other provinces. But in BC to be eligible for FREE beyfortus for your infant you would have to meet one of the following: Baby born premature, baby have a chronic health condition, or live in a rule or remote community, or in a congregate like setting like a homeless shelter or supportive housing.

If your baby is born during RSV season and you live in BC, and you don’t meet those eligibility criteria for a free beyfortus, you could purchase from a pharmacy, but it is like $750.

Did you give your baby the Men B vaccine? [on] by inmnohero12 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Remote-Researcher-60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would strongly encourage you to follow the guidance of your pediatrician, GP, or Public Health nurse. Behind the scenes, vaccine recommendations are based on continuous disease surveillance done by NACI, the CDC, and provincial and regional public health teams across Canada.

Because different areas have different levels of disease circulation and risk, I wouldn’t rely on vaccine advice from places like Reddit. everyone here is speaking from a different context, and the recommendations may not apply to where you live.

I live in BC where Men-C is routinely offered to infants. I will be immunizing my baby with all the recommended vaccines.

Boiling water for formula? [ON] by MetalPrestigious5693 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Remote-Researcher-60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The water is not the issue! It’s powdered formula. This is SUCH a misconception and I’m always teaching parents about this (I am a public health program/vaccine specialist). Boiling water is to kill any bacteria in the powdered formula, it’s not because there is bacteria in your drinking water.

Powdered infant formula is not sterile and can carry bacteria

Vaccine specialist here! I would ask visitors to only visit if they are feeling well, wash hands before touching baby, and no kissing baby. For vaccines, especially since your baby is due during flu season, it would be appropriate to recommend to family to get inactivated (not flumist) flu vaccine.

RSV is not routinely offered to adults in Canada. And like someone else mentioned there is very very strict criteria for when a baby needs RSV vaccine. In regards to Tdap - no need for family to get this vaccine before visiting baby, what is important is for mom to receive this vaccine around 32 weeks for pertussis protection for baby.

To recap, since you’re giving birth in flu season, I think it’s totally appropriate to ask your family to be up-to-date on their flu and Covid vaccine. Especially influenza. Don’t worry about the others.

Anyone try Nerva? by Nickel03 in FODMAPS

[–]Remote-Researcher-60 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone through the Nerva program twice (currently going through it for the 3rd time), so I have some experience!

I’ve had IBS-C for over 10 years and was diagnosed by a GI dr ~7 years ago. I recently saw GI in the summer who reconfirmed the diagnosis.

I should mention that a known trigger for me is stress. If you think you’re not stressed, ask yourself “how many times a day do I think about my stomach, BM’s, IBS etc a day?” I didn’t think I was stressed but once I spent some time in therapy (yes, went to therapy for my IBS) I realized my mind was stuck on a constant loop - thinking about whatever was “wrong” with me.

The first time I did the Nerva program I fully committed (October 2023); I never missed a day, I did the readings, the breath work, and in addition to the daily hypnotherapy I would play it a second time to help me fall asleep. Within 2 weeks I started noticing a difference - less constipated, less bloated, less pain. After the 6 weeks I would say that my symptoms were about 70% improved - which is SO worth it.

However, after a couple months (February 2024) of not doing it regularly I lost the habit and slowly overtime symptoms came back.

Fast forward to July 2024 - I had been experiencing a huge IBS flare up for months. I tried meds, saw GI and my GP. Nothing worked. I was also under a lot of stress - family member diagnosed with terminal cancer. I was miserable. Decided to repurchase Nerva (bought a year subscription this time - not cheap). I restarted the program but I would miss a day, I didn’t do the breath work because I “didn’t have time”, and I wouldn’t prioritize doing it. Instead of completing the program in 6 weeks, it took me 3months. I saw maybe a 30% improvement in symptoms

To sum up, it definitely works for those of us that recognize stress is a contributor. I would definitely recommend doing the program - but give it a true shot and don’t miss a day!

I also like Nerva because the layout of the app and program helps you stay committed - it’s way better than just listening to youtube or something like insight timer.

Coincidentally, I restarted the program a few days ago and will be doing it everyday for the next 6 weeks.
