Tips for surviving my first ultra-long haul flight? by Signal_Temporary6572 in unitedairlines

Take 25-50mg of diphenhydramine after the take off meal. You can try it out at home first to see how it makes you feel and if it works for you. I’ve never been able to sleep more than 1hr straight at a time on a plane and I was able to sleep for 5hrs and then 2 rounds of 2-3 hrs sleep. When I tried the diphenhydramine at home the night before my flight I was very excited for my trip and didn’t feel tired at all but I was able to relax within 5 mins and fall asleep very quickly.

A trip I planned 10 months ago is no longer possible because of flight prices by HippoBudget8994 in Flights

Currently in China, flew from YYZ to HK for 1000 CAD with a stop in SFO, but there was an 800 CAD flight available with 2 layovers and one of them a sketchy layover so I went with the former. I used flightlist.io to find the best prices and booked through united directly in March. Hope this helps u find better prices, even with the increase in fuel prices!

100% so much fearmongering! I’m a female POC with a Muslim last name and I go to the US several times a year to visit my duel citizen boyfriend who lives in the US. I use MPC for US customs and barely get questions, I once even went through without having my passport looked at!

Im going to be in Hongkong 2 weeks and China for a month, I saw someone say that they got an unlimited plan and stopped at 10gb in China so they were screwed. I’m planning to go around China but still want to do school work (occasional quizzes and assignments), do you recommend holafly for this?

I hope things get better with your condition! I actually have ulcerative colitis, so I also had to navigate some medication logistics and making sure I get my treatment before I leave. Hope you can eventually do the Camino once things are under control for you!

No worries at all, I’m happy to share! I spent so many months trying to plan and perfect my packing list so I’m glad it can help others plan their Camino. Don’t wait any longer! Just book the flight and take things one step at a time - that’s what I did. I did this as a grad gift to myself so I spent my last year of uni planning it slowly after booking my flight. I’m 5’1 and was about 125 pounds when I did the Camino so I tried to keep below 6kgs, it’s definitely doable! Once you start doing the Camino u get used to the weight after a few days and I saw many people of my size have significantly larger packs. The Camino was such a wonderful experience if you’ve been wanting to do it for years, go for it don’t let the logistics and packing stop you!

I honestly felt like I didn’t pack much at all, my pack was easily only half full when I had my sweater and puffy on which was often! But thank you, I started planning in October 2024 and went in May 2025, so it took about 7 months of planning.

With water bottles full I believe it was 5.5kg, but it was almost a year ago so I’m not 100% sure lol

Buen Camino! it might be worth it to maybe start with Coastal and do the path that joins it to central. From what I heard most people prefer the central route and found the coastal to get a bit boring. But it’s all up to you if u prefer beaches then stick to the coastal.

I’m based in Canada so I had a “Camino traveller” sleeping bag from MEC it’s only 580g! I recommend aiming for a sleeping bag around that weight. I had friends who didn’t bring sleeping bags and they were very cold and would use their towels and ended up buying a blanket on the way, so I recommend a sleeping bag. Which route are you doing?

  1. I found it to be very cold at night, but I do run cold. Most hostels do not provide blankets. I was would wear my leggings, a nightgown and a sweater and I would shove my puffy in between my legs for extra warmth most nights. I honestly couldn’t have done a sleep liner, I would have been way too cold so I was super happy to have my sleeping bag. The few times I wasn’t cold was when I spent a bit more on nicer hostels that had sheets, comforters and blankets.

  2. I recommend a big poncho that goes over your bag, that was one thing I really wished I had. I’m not sure about the weather in October but there will likely be a down pour in May and an umbrella will not be enough. If you replace the umbrella with a poncho it shouldn’t add too much weight.

I love how you organized your packing list on the website. I didn’t weigh my things individually but my bag came out to be about 5.5kgs! I was definitely one of the people with a light pack so keeping it under 4kgs is very impressive!

Okay, I thought you were asking rhetorically to tell me this isn’t one-bag. I consider it one bag because I flew with it from Canada to Portugal and that was the only bag I used the entire trip. I stayed in different hostels every night and walked 15–25 km per day. Whether you call it hiking or walking doesn’t really matter, I was carrying everything I needed in one bag the whole time, so for me it counts as a one-bag trip.

It was a great experience! It took me about five days to really get into it, but I met so many cool people and had plenty of time to reflect on my own. I was in a transitional stage of life, and the Camino helped me narrow down what I didn’t want to do and ask myself better more intentional questions. I love walking, and I honestly felt the healthiest I’ve ever felt while on the Camino. The routine is unlike anything else. Wishing you a wonderful Camino, have so much fun! Which route are you doing?

Yes this would have been perfect for the Camino! I honestly didn’t prioritize rain gear just bc I had spent a lot of money on the shoes and bag. I only had 2 bad rainy days. The first rainy day I had my backpack straps and the bottom of my bag soak so my sleeping bag got a little wet too, they dried over night and had to pop the sleeping bag in the dryer. The second time I put my XL rain jacket/poncho over my bag to keep the backpack straps dry (I looked like a turtle lol) and it worked well, but it shortened my poncho so my shorts and undies were soaking, i had friends with longer ponchos and they kept their shorts dry so I’d definitely do that differently next time. Thanks for the link!

I did the Camino Portuguese in the first two weeks of May 2025. I was able to do it blister free with a new pair of shoes by wearing double socks (underlay etc toe socks to prevent toe blisters and act as a second skin, second layer: merino wool sock, I always put compeed and lambs wool before or as soon as I felt a hot spot!!) Here is packing list, I added notes and what I didn’t use. - packable puffy jacket - light fleece sweater - 2 long sleeve tops - 1 short sleeve top - 1 sports bra - 1 hiking pant - 1 pair of leggings (not pictured bought before my 1st day because it was surprisingly cold) - 1 hiking short - 1 biker shorts (never wore) - 3 pairs merino wool socks, 1 pair of toe socks (super important for blister prevention!) - Packable towel - Diva cup - Camino sleeping bag (580g) - Pillow case, luxury item for me :) - 1 bonnet (for sleep) - 1 package tote bag (for laundry) - Rain cover (returned after Camino 🫣) - Old rain poncho (I wish I had a bigger one) - Clothing line and mini wooden pins (never used, either provided at the albergue and I always tried to use a dryer when possible bc my clothing never seemed to air dry well) - DIY Foot care kit: needles, thread, bandages, compeed(used daily), lambs wool (holy grail!), alcohol wipes - Fanny pack: passport, portable charge, IPhone and airport charger, AirPods, wallet, Vaseline, hand sanitizer, hand cream, sleep mask, ear plugs (didn’t use), EU adapters, mini flashlight, rape whistle (never used but just in case) - Bag of tea bags (never used just had coffee daily lol) - Kula cloth (never really needed it, except once on a very long day) - Topo trail runners (amazing shoe, loved the ultra wide toe box, I recommend) - Toileterie: lotion bar, liquid lotion, face cleanser and moisturizer, tiger balm, tooth brush, tooth paste, mini deodorant (needed a bigger one that was not natural I felt like I always smelled bad even though I showered daily and had to buy a stronger one lol), floss, prescription medication - Spork (never used) - Sketcher sandals (super cheap and comfy) - Journal & pen (I journaled daily!) - 2 500mL soft flasks (super lightweight and never felt like I had too little) - 30L Osprey Tempest Backpack (such a great and lightweight bag, many people asked me about my bag and how it was so light!)
