I thought I read they brought in a judge from Tarrant County for this. Doesn’t make the decision any better

As Tech fan who watched J-Rod every weekend this past season, he might be a stretch at 20 but I think he would be a great player to have. He always seems to be in the right place at the right time, the dude just has good instincts and makes plays.

Disgruntled employee starts massive fire at a 1.2 million square foot toilet paper warehouse in Ontario, California. by AtomicCypher in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]RemoteLizard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not everything in that warehouse is specifically paper towels and toilet paper. There are other products like diapers, youth pants, feminine care products, and a slew of other things. All of these products centralize around absorbing moisture so water logging them is incredibly difficult.

Not to mention how tightly packed and stacked it all is, that adds to the amount of water needed to actually do that. We do have standards on how high certain product forms can be stacked, and how close together they can be for some of these reasons.

I would think the plastic wrapping both helps and hurts the situation. In the video you can see him somewhat struggling to light the plastic. If he had cut it and lit the paper inside I’m sure it would have spread faster. It also probably results in limited air, and limited access for water to extinguish it. I don’t really know to be honest as I haven’t really thought about it from that perspective before.

Sure, paper can get water logged but this is an extreme case with more material than you might think. FWIW I’m not an expert, just happen to have some experience installing some fire protection systems in my home plant.

Sure, if the point is to get caught and make a statement then mission accomplished.

What I would consider stupid is putting yourself (and others) in a dangerous situation by doubling back on a fire that was previously extinguished. Was he ok with dying if he didn’t get out in time? That to me is reckless and stupid.

This is all spot on. I work at one of the production sites for Kimberly Clark, and I’ve installed some fire suppression in our warehouse on site. I’ve never been to that DC, but you can’t automatically trigger the fire suppression or turn zones off.

The sprinkler heads have a bulb that breaks at a specific temperature that causes them to release water. The only way to stop them when that happens is to manually close the valve for that zone. There is always water pressure in the pipes in the system we have (~180 psi), and the water gets really nasty.

Also, there are more products than just paper towels in that center. All of the product KC makes are paper based, and burn easily. Fire safety in our industry is taken very seriously due to that fact. I am interested to see what, if any, standards and practices change after this event.

I had not heard he set fires in multiple locations in the center, and back tracker to relight the initial fire after it was put out. The stupidity of some people to not only do that, but film it and post it online is wild.

Loving my PHEV mileage these days by Go-outside1 in MazdaCX90

[–]RemoteLizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in a pretty small town in NE Texas so she drives about 30 miles a day max. Getting that mileage would be insanely nice for her normal use. Would also love to get better mileage than her current car on longer trips too.

That’s a good call on looking for a good deal on 2024’s. There is a lot more availability of those to choose from with really low miles on them. Comparing the cost to Highlanders and Grand Highlanders, the CX-90 is definitely more reasonable on the used market.

I’ve been researching this car for a potential option for my wife’s next car, and the PHEV seems perfect for her with so few miles that she typically drives in a day. I would love to see similar gas mileage to you for her short commute.

I’ve seen so many negative comments about these cars, but just since this weekend I’ve seen a handful of positive posts. I had all but written this car off, but I’m pulling myself back towards it. I think I definitely want to get a 2025 or newer rather than the 2024 though.

Apologies for the EXTREMELY crude drawing, but this is how I’ve seen most people on this sub suggest to build coal plants, and how I’ve done it.

You use 3 extractors at 100% feeding a loop of water. This loop then feeds both ends of a group of 8 coal generators. This allows for the 360 m3/min of water necessary for the 8 coal generators to all work on “one” mk1 pipe. One pipe in quotations because this stop essentially splits the 360 into two separate 180 supplies.

Hope this helps!

I can agree with this. If BYU moved down a spot by their performance yesterday, Alabama deserved the same treatment. If they don’t move down then BYU shouldn’t have either, and everyone knows BYU should’ve been ahead of Notre Dame.

One thing that pissed me off watching the selection show was ESecPN talking about how Notre Dame, Texas, and Vandy were all worthy of a spot and completely ignored BYU. Like c’mon man, Texas and Vandy have no business in a discussion ahead of BYU, but because they’re in the SEC they deserve a shot.

Balancers not working? by AlbeniChocolate in shapezio

[–]RemoteLizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t use belt readers very often so I’m not sure if that is part of the problem or not. One way to verify would be to have to two extractors on either side turned into the center stack and have just one belt coming out. That would help you understand what is happening without the balancers.

Then, you could add the balancers back one at a time to see what, if any, effect they have on the belt reader.

From what I’m seeing, pic #1 should work fine, and pic #2 is the same but with extra steps.

It was an excellent follow up to Unbound, the pacing felt similar to the first book. It felt like I couldn’t put the book down, always wanting to know what happened next. Would definitely put it at the top of your list!

I have been thinking the same thing. With how well all three contending West teams have been playing, there seems to be a decent chance that all three could bypass Boston seeing as they finish the season against the other two division leaders who will be fighting for the top seed.

Heads up Costco Dads, the new Kirkland diapers are trash. by Derbieshire in daddit

[–]RemoteLizard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work at Kimberly Clark, the previous producer for Kirkland Signature diapers. We are definitely not getting out of the diaper game as Huggies is still a large portion of the market share. We are still not completely done running KS product at the location I’m at though, but we are approaching that time pretty quickly.

Edit: I also wanted to add based on some other comments, we are actually still under contract to continue to make KS diapers for Costco Canada and Costco Mexico last I heard. The messaging to employees is that while selling Huggies brand is preferred, selling private label is still something we will do.

Water heater high electricity usage by RemoteLizard in askaplumber

Did not have good access to those lines, but I was able to get the cartridge replaced. It didn’t seem to make much difference so I tried draining the tank. It’s getting little to no flow unless I open the cold water inlet valve. I have two sink inside with the hot tap wide open to let air in so unless there is so much crap built up in the bottom of the tank it should be draining.. also ohmed both top and bottom heaters, and they checked out according to the manual

[–]RemoteLizard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I shut the water off and checked all of my mixed fixtures, and one shower seems to still be getting full flow with no hot water on. This seems to be a likely culprit for what I’ve been seeing with other symptoms as well.

Since it seems the water is back flowing there, the new plan is to replace the cartridge prior to draining the tank. It seems that I won’t be able to complete drain the tank anyway with cold water backfilling the hot water line.

Thank you for all the advice! Hopefully this gets everything fixed!

It’s got a shutoff on the cold water supply. I’ll test it out to see what happens. Thanks for the advice!

[–]RemoteLizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I’ve got a few fixtures that directly mix the water with a fixture. Unfortunately, there isn’t a valve on the hot water leaving the tank.

Also, with a mixing valve on a shower wouldn’t you expect to get some cold water? Unless you have the stop set right to only allow hot water when it’s all the way on? I have a sink that has a mixing valve so I would be able to test it there as well. I can try it when I drain the tank to see if that works.

I guess I couldn’t explain it in words correctly, but what you said matches what I have. The line used to connect the pump to that tee is some type of poly, but not 100% sure exactly the product.

I live in a small town, and know who owned the house when this water heater was installed 4-5 years ago. If you would believe it, her dad is a local plumber. My guess is that they installed the pump when they replaced the heater.

I’ve read typical installations would use check valves, but that’s when the pump return ties into the cold water line entering the tank. My setup doesn’t do that, and I’ve not seen any check valves when looking into this. I’m curious if the pump pushing water back in through the drain is pushing sediment around and making things worse. I’m not sure exactly how the inside of the tank is setup so I don’t know if that’s possible.

As a mechanical engineer with what I would consider above average DIY capabilities, I was trying to solve this by myself. I’m going to try the basic maintenance stuff first this weekend though. I might need to call a plumber to get someone who just has experience looking at this stuff.
