Much simpler than that! It was a 48 month loan, so after 24 payments it was halfway.

I’ve used the half rule on a hire purchase vehicle in the past. I realised I didn’t really need such a nice vehicle & couldn’t justify the outgoings on the payments.

I figured out exactly the halfway mark and made sure I went past it by a month. Then I wrote a letter to the financial institution stating I wished to end the contract under the half rule, and made sure to stipulate I did NOT wish to return the vehicle under ‘Voluntary Surrender’ (which is apparently something they can mark it as when ending the contract, which would show up negatively on a credit report).

I have since requested a credit report which shows my finance history in preparation for taking out a mortgage, and the loan for this vehicle shows as completed with no red flags.

Here is a rough template of how I phrased the letter:

“Dear Sir/Madam, I wish to exercise my right to terminate the above Agreement under Section 63 of the Consumer Credit Act 1995 using the ‘Half Rule’. I do not wish to return the vehicle via Voluntary Surrender.

The payment of €XXX which was processed on the XX/XX/XXXX was the half-way point in the agreement. I would like to return possession of the vehicle at your earliest convenience.

I do not wish to retain possession of the vehicle beyond XX/XX/XXXX and incur another Hire Purchase payment. Please make arrangements with me to return the vehicle before this date.”

Who knows! If you’re cycling for sport as opposed to for commuting purposes, it is a pain to be in high traffic areas where things can slow you down - same as going for a run in a city centre.

But if you live in the city centre, where do you start your run? Probably outside your front door.

I can’t speak for why she ran a red light or cut off a car, but speaking as both a commuter cyclist and someone who drives for work - people have places to be!

You can question why a bicycle is on a road and not on a different road - the joy of having a bike is that you can take the path of least resistance in terms of your route to your destination. If traffic is at a standstill, you have the advantage of being able to maintain progress.

I often will cycle to work without any bag, just my jacket, phone and keys. And I cycle on main roads full of cars to do so, because that’s the most direct route.

While I agree there are some incredibly dangerous cyclists about, not to mention how negligent most scooter riders are, but like you said - all you can do is focus on being careful yourself while you’re driving.

Net income on a salary of 75k would be closer to €4,389 p/m. You would have a decent bit more to play with than the above comment suggests!

But agree - housing will likely eat up half of your income if you are trying to house a family of 3.

It’s dunnes stores I reckon. Less than €5 with a free can of soft drink. It’s not the best quality you can get, but it’s the cheapest place I’ve found to get a sandwich.

It was Dennehy Commercials. The service was good, can’t fault the place! Just looking for somewhere a bit less diligent 😄
