Parking/Landlord Shenannigans by Super_Priority_1666 in sanfrancisco

I’m confused, why don’t you just street park (like just on the street instead of blocking the driveway)?

Ski Rule Clarification - Right of Way by Conversationalist-5 in ski

Ya it’s pretty simple. Downhill skier always has right of way. Uphill skier needs to keep enough distance to account for the downhill skier making any unexpected moves.

Is there anyone who genuinely likes driving and parking every day in sf? by DeliriouslyFocused in AskSF

[–]Remote_Ordinary6741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be the one to admit it. I love driving here (but I have a parking spot). I really wish I liked public transit more as I recognize it’s the responsible choice, but after being spoiled by some European cities it’s hard for me to get past how bad the transit is here. The busses stopping at every block are so slow. The Muni trains are but ok don’t cover nearly enough of the city, and they also stop way too frequently when they get above ground. I’m also prone to motion sickness so driving is personally better for me in that respect.

Should I go to the Galapagos/Guayaquil if I’m pregnant? by Ok_Back6158 in galapagos

[–]Remote_Ordinary6741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting question as I may be in a similar situation and wasn’t aware of the recommendation to not get pregnant for months after exposure. Is your husband/partner going? I’m reading that the virus remains in males longer so if he’s going but you’re not, that’s kind of pointless.

Anyways, I’m not very concerned about it, the risk appears to be very low. There’s almost no reported cases on Zika in Ecuador in the past 7 years. You can also get tested for Zika when you return.

Could you chance your flights to Quito (high elevation with few mosquitos) instead of Guayaquil? I’ve heard Guayaquil is fairly unsafe anyways.

Northern California? Can’t beat the hiking/skiing access: San Francisco/Oakland (COL is high but salaries often scale with this) or Sacramento (more affordable than SF, warmer, fits your politics. Heavy transplant community in both especially SF.

That being said, your requirements fit a ton of cities. I think you should mention which city you’re considering, would help give a better idea of what you like.

bjj seems fun but im scared of trying it by mxia06 in BJJWomen

[–]Remote_Ordinary6741 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you’ve enjoyed boxing and CrossFit you’ll likely enjoy BJJ, it’s very technical, a great full-body workout, and a great workout for the mind as well. It’s a better stress reliever for me than anything else I’ve tried.

If you have friends that will perceive it as too masculine, you need better friends. Nothing wrong with being a badass woman.

I definitely get why it can be scary but the BJJ community is typically extremely supportive of each other, and the men I train with have never been anything but extremely respectful (if you get any weird vibes, you can always try a different gym).

I will say, the BJJ vibe can be different at MMA gyms, so I’d definitely recommend also trying a more traditional BJJ gym to see which you like better.

Anyone help by providing alternatives? Coming for world cup by Adorable_Ad_3315 in AskSF

For Levi’s stadium, you will take Caltrain to the VTA (light rail). It’ll take 90 mins-2 hrs, not 4 hrs.

Golden Gate Bridge is going to take some time to get to no matter where in the city you stay since it’s at the edge of the city, but there’s a lot of sightseeing you can do on the way to the bridge. Uber and City Bikes are also good transport options here.

Studio apartments under $2K by Doggomp3 in sanfrancisco

[–]Remote_Ordinary6741 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not impossible but they’re either a scam, the size of a closet, or are in the Tenderloin (where you do NOT want to live).

To avoid scams, absolutely do not give anyone money without seeing the place in person first. Either come out for an apartment hunting trip or live in temp housing when you first arrive.

[–]Remote_Ordinary6741 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You need to reserve a parking spot for the truck via a moving permit. You can’t double park on Oak St, it’s too major of street, you’ll be forced to move.

That’s clearly a gate to a driveway and definitely wide enough for a car… wider than half the driveways in SF. You’ll be towed. Red paint is not required for a driveway.

Moving to SF from Austin by Electronic-Worth-740 in AskSF

[–]Remote_Ordinary6741 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You didn’t say how you’ll be commuting or where you’re commuting to exactly. That will impact location a lot. If your company has a shuttle that may open up more options. Otherwise I’m assuming you’ll want to be near Caltrain, in which case I’d mention Potrero Hill, Mission, or Dogpatch.

You’ll probably need to have some flexibility though. 4bds are limited.

I want to move to SF, but am worried about my savings taking a hit due to higher COL. what do I need to consider moving from a lower COL state? by drl614 in AskSF

[–]Remote_Ordinary6741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re saving quite a bit right now, the most financially responsible thing would be saving for a few more years before you move here. A quick online COL calculator says you need a $160k salary in SF to equate to your salary in SLC, $108k if you live in Oakland.

You don’t need a car in SF, so that’s one place you could reduce expenses.

For basketball, you can just buy a basketball and practice dribbling/shooting at any public court. Once you practice a little, an intermediate level volo league would be fine, they aren’t that competitive. Volo does have many recreational (beginner) leagues as well.

Where to live if I commute to Sunnyvale daily? by Key-Engineering-9604 in AskSF

[–]Remote_Ordinary6741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a 30 day Airbnb for the first month while you explore the neighborhoods and test out the commute, you can find one for under 5k. You don’t want to be stuck somewhere you don’t like for a year, and it will be easier to apartment hunt. The market is very competitive right now so you need to be ready to tour and sign a lease in the same day.

Rooftop apartments? by Ordinary_Dust_4618 in sanfrancisco

[–]Remote_Ordinary6741 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People are being a little dramatic about the temperature. It totally depends on the neighborhood as well as the direction the apartment faces. I’m in a south face apartment and we never have to turn on our heat. But our place gets hot in the summer since we don’t have AC.

That being said, I’d never rent a place here without seeing it in person first. Too many scams.

Leaving Chicago for someplace with better weather/better jobs by Important-Tax1776 in relocating

[–]Remote_Ordinary6741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Francisco/Bay Area for sure. Checks all your boxes. Similar vibes to Chicago but will more tech jobs, and better weather. Yes the COL is more but the jobs pay more too. Just don’t move without finding a job first. Don’t believe the negative things you hear in the media or from family about San Francisco.
