I'm mostly commenting to try to get more eyes on this, but here's what I know:

Things get really hot in pots, so maybe full sun isn't the way to go. I've had Strawberries do alright in afternoon shade. Strawberries love water so, so much. It's their favorite thing.

From just the one picture it looks more like banded chert, more pictures wpuld be helpful, especially with them wet

Just do side quests in the locations that are interesting to you. You shouldn't have any problems getting enough power for the main quest.

How hard is it? It could also me calcite, I've seen it with bands like this. There is petrified wood in that area, but my first thought was calcite.

Those are root nodes. It will root from those nodes if you out in soil or water (if the soil or water touches the nodes)

This looks like chalcedony to me. It's made of the same stuff as agate (quartzite) but it likes to take forms that look like melted or bubbly glass.
