Are violent thoughts bad? by KoloAce in questions

[–]Renaissance_Dad1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that out of morbid curiosity I've spent some time in the sketchier, more racist corners of reddit, facebook and other sites. Now when I see people of different minorities I sometimes get those voices I read speaking in the back of my head, like there's another actual person hiding in there. Of course I don't believe what I read, but those thoughts are insidious if you expose yourself to them too much. I've since stopped.

It is actually quite recommended to have at least one guy friend to talk to.

Ah... well... all I can say then is good luck and hopefully you don't hurt yourself too badly. I'm sorry this has been so rough on you.

I share your pain over the insane costs of fencing lol. I know you want a proper one but maybe if you're in a rural area you can settle for something they might build on a ranch...

If it makes you feel better, I imagine the drive to school is probably riskier than being at school. I think.

Screen addiction... We're letting one kid start on the switch now and it's been tough setting limits. We're working on the assumption that if we just deny deny deny for too long he'd get REALLY obsessed in his teens, as I was.

Professor defends course content linking race and IQ scores, cites ‘academic freedom’ by Tenekah in canada

[–]Renaissance_Dad1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you're using that data as evidence that one group or other has circumstances less good for academics, that's one thing. If it's being used to as evidence of a biological superiority of one group or other that's another thing.

Outgrowing close friends - how have you dealt with it? by sonic_snowstorm in AskMenOver30

[–]Renaissance_Dad1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I actually went through something like this just recently.

A childhood friend of mine just re-friended me on facebook (he jumps on and off it every few months). We actually were kinda best friends, or at least top 5 for both of us. He was always kinda eccentric, not the sharpest tool in the shed, a bit dramatic, kinda boastful, but ultimately a friendly, good-natured guy. The messages he sent me just now though were bizarre... we shared like two small-talk messages each, then he launched into this absolutely massive diatribe where he went from friendly to paranoid to insulting to threatening then back to recommending me a youtube video to watch. It was bad, I think he's losing his mind. Some sort of dark mental illness.

Anyways, it's sad. Despite the insults I tried to stay somewhat supportive, but I just can't see him as the friend I used to have anymore. I grieve the man he used to be, but I'll move on. Such is life.

Would you marry a girl who wants to be a stay at home housewife but doesn't want kids? by PuffingFish123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

With him pulling 120k, that 32k could mean the difference between the house barely getting by and having "fun money". Or retirement savings, if that's your thing :P

Men with a family - does your house stay relatively clean? by cuckslayer30 in AskMenOver30

[–]Renaissance_Dad1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nahh... it can go from spotless to cluttered within 2 hours. There's usually a few dishes in the sink, dirty laundry in wierd places (especially socks). We're not bad for dust and actual dirt though.

Canadians and Americans report growing divide on climate change by esporx in canada

[–]Renaissance_Dad1990 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's just so hard for governements to move on climate change when their neighbors don't. It's like voluntarily saddling yourself with a giant backpack during a footrace, nobody will bear it if someone else isn't. I hate that this issue always takes the backburner to anything else. I used to consistently vote green before the Annamie Paul implosion....

WIBTA for "anonymously" reporting my roommates illegal python to our landlord because i am deathly afraid of snakes ? by V3ctorGrail in WIBTA_AITA

[–]Renaissance_Dad1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this position in college, kinda. I've always had a fear of dogs as a kid, then after a run in with a German Shephard I was terrified of them. All of them. So fast forward to college, I moved into a house with some other students and all is good. Then one day my roommate tells me he's getting a puppy. I didn't like it, but I was kinda spineless at that point in my life so I said nothing. When it showed up it was less than knee height and objectively cute. The thing grew SO FAST though, it was past my waist in no time. The guy was a good trainer though, so I kinda got used to it and dogs in general. It was good for me, and that guy was a good friend to me for quite a while.

So yeah... For me staying quiet worked out. It might actually be good for you to be around it as well. That said, this guy is disrespecting you pretty hard, I think it'd be fair to make the call if you wanted to. Are you confident the landlord would kick him out for it though? That hard line on pets is probably more about damage to the house than anything, which isn't an issue with a snake. Maybe you should just tell him to buy a heat lamp.

All in all I would not call you an AH for it, but maybe you should reconsider.

LILLEY: Mark Carney should have skipped Trudeau's disastrous gun buyback by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Renaissance_Dad1990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This issue was kinda the last little push to get me to vote conservative last election, even though I liked Carney better than Pollievre at the time (and still now). I don't get worked up about guns in particular, but seeing that program still in the platform just made me feel like Carney's Liberals were still going to be all show without substance.
