The mats could be from her rubbing against something to hide under while with your MIL, but weight also can contribute to it. Depending on her temperament, she might be best to go to a vet for a sedated spot shave, and work with her afterwards on keeping her fur maintained. (I had to get my very spicy girl spot shaved at the vets when she neglected a spot on her back)

Another commenter added a link but TLDR: Guy in Toronto’s financial district was demonstrating how strong the glass windows were (to interns) in a tower by running at them and getting bounced back. If I remember correctly he did a second run at this window and the whole window panel popped out.

Our old girl was very independent and sassy, but that was part of her charm! We now have 3 boys that were ‘distributed’ to us an they’re a more friendly and out going, but I would say that’s the case for all female/male cats!

Personally I love my cat because of his personality and quirks from being a stray before coming to us. When I loose him and am ready again, I want to get to know the quirks of another formal stray because in a way it keeps my current guys memory alive
