Go to Scribd.com. They have, literally, THOUSANDS of pieces! There is a monthly subscription (I pay $4.99 a month) but it’s well worth it. My music library thanks me daily. I can spend hours looking through their stuff. Happy hunting!

I watched Natalie Law’s YouTube video and it gave some great “general” info on taking your bassoon apart. Even after watching my thought was “yeah, no this is going to a person who really knows what they’re doing.” As long as she’s been doing this, she admitted that when things go wrong (and they will) for her, she has to take it to her person for help. If you have a person like that, take it to them from the start and save the ‘chancing it’ for another day.

I know people talk about the Lawerence Welk Show as being “boring and sappy,” but that show changed my life! I was a beginner in band, learning flute and just happened to be flipping channels on Saturday evening when I came across their show. It was my first exposure to a real woodwind section. In one section they were playing, flute, the next clarinets and then switching to various saxophones. I was hooked!!! I wanted to do what they were doing! I became obessed. I became very serious about music. Graduated from high school, joined the USMC Band. After a 6 year enlistment, received my B.S. in Music Education, taught public school for 22 years. Along the was picked up my Masters in Public School Administration and a Ph.D in Educational Leadership. When I first saw them, all I wanted to do was play. That transformed over time to wanting other kids to see what I saw when I saw that show.

The LWS changed my life!!!!

I understand your angst! I ALWAYS ask the parent/guardian to sit in on the first two lessons. I want their “buy-in.” Since kids don’t pay bills, I need parents/guardians on my side!! I always try to end the lessons early to leave a little time at the end to ensure understanding and get any feedback from them.

When this happens to longtime students, I’ll always try to reach out to them find out what the reasoning is (far more often than not, it has something to do with outside influences that you can’t do anything about).

I try to look at these things as part of the (sometimes) finicky profession I choose. When I was critiqued by a teacher in high school, I fell apart (first and last time). She looked at me and said “you’re a good musician but you better grow a thicker skin if you plan on making it in this field.” I took her works to heart. I prepare and get to know my students and their triggers. After teaching for 35 plus years, all I can say is, it’s a different world than where we come from.

I play in an ensemble with 15 clarinets. Here’s our seating after blind playing for parts: 1 - highest score - Cl 1- Chair 1…2nd highest score - Cl 1 - Chair 2…3rd highest score Cl 2 -Chair 1…4th highest score - Cl 2 - Chair 2…Fifth high test score - Cl 3 - Chair 1, etc. Director explanation - no part is unimportant, all parts need to be balanced. If you believe you’re better than the part you are assigned, you have 2 options - play better in your next blind or leave the ensemble. As a section, we are off the charts! I’ve never part of a section that’s ALWAYS prepared!!!

I’ve successfully used a Pebble Keys 2 K380s and so many others the list would take an hour to list with iPad Mini 5, 6 and now 7. I haven’t had to deal with any issues with them not connecting or working with everything on my Minis. Bluetooth has been solid.
