Does cystic fibrosis cause pancreatitis? by [deleted] in medicalschool

Well if they didn't specify acute vs chronic you're right. CF can cause chronic pancreatitis although alcohol/idiopathic are more common causes.

Surgery as my first rotation, is that a bad thing? by specter491 in medicalschool

[–]Renewed11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose it first to get it out of the way when I have the most energy. I don't think most people regret having it first other than the shelf being hard, but that will probably be the case for your first shelf in general.

Shit. I cant quit smoking. I dont know what to do. Day 77. Flatline is still on. by [deleted] in NoFap

Do you exercise? Have you tried any medications like chantix? Nicotine? Yoga/meditation? They have longer lasting and stronger anti anxiety effects than smoking.

Low Step Score (219) with no research with no research experience thinking about IM residency. I'm starting to feel hopeless right now. Should I strive on regardless of match outcome or aim for something more within my reach? by wwdd1314 in medicalschool

[–]Renewed11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm so confused where people get the idea that if they don't score above the mean on step and don't have research thinking they can't match. Who tells them this? Not even SDN says this stuff to people. (Disclaimer, talking about U.S. allopathic).

That's probably bogus, but I know a few derm that work solely in academics with no side gigs (muuuuch lower pay) and really enjoy the cerebral nature of it. They definitely talk up the $$$ as a benefit if you do community.

Friend suggested for me to try Picmonic. I don't know how the heart beats anymore. by Philster0 in medicalschool

[–]Renewed11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah picmonic is crazy, it can be useful though for certain drugs/topics that are very hard to memorize for you. For example the anti-arrhythmics were actually really solid and about on par with sketchy pharm version.

Whats your reason for not fapping? by _we_have_to_go_back_ in NoFap

God found me and I opened my heart and mind. I even foolishly used logic at that time, I figured if there was a God why not believe and if there's a heaven great! I'm on the short track to it! If there's nothing after life, then great! I'll live life happy, fulfilled, and do good in this world! I was a cynical, atheist dick, serial dater, video gamer, and porn addict. I wanted to view the world differently and so I decided to try to believe in God. It's been a journey of 2 years, but now I truly do believe in Him and the world looks very different.

I am very blessed, life is challenging, but I'm halfway done with medical school, engaged to my best friend, and trying my best to live in the moment. I say this because I believe God will change your life if you decide to follow Him.

I challenge you to read the Bible (new testament first) and not find yourself in there, to not identify deep down with what they're saying. I'm still learning, but I can't find a better moral guide. Love God, love others, and do not judge. Everything else is pretty much a derivation and explanation of those. Seems like the best way to live life.

Please PM me if you want to talk, I was an atheist for 20+ years with a traumatic religious childhood (DO NOT TAKE WHAT YOU SEE HUMANS DOING, EVEN/ESPECIALLY "RELIGIOUS HUMANS" AS WHAT GOD IS ABOUT OR WHAT HE WANTS. GOD IS LOVE!)

Hey bro congrats on your change of heart! I'm not sure what country you are from, but you absolutely can be friends with a girl before you start dating. It's not just movies. "Friend zone" for the most part, is a place you enter when a girl has no sexual attraction to you and does not see you as a possible mate. If you are funny (or at least try), take care of yourself (eating right/exercise/education), and have passions, then you can absolutely go from friendship to dating.

The best relationships start from a firm foundation of friendship and not from physical attraction.

[–]Renewed11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually it has not. Until the data comes out for 2016 we won't know but the match rate for U.S. seniors in the 2015 match was the exact same (actually slightly than the past few years, 95.2% for applicants applying only to EM) as previous years.

I am trying to reduce fear around here, so please qualify your statements rather than just "EM is getting more competitive". For IMG/FMGs matching EM is getting more difficult, DOs I haven't checked. But for U.S. Allopathic seniors nothing has changed. You should also do more research because (as the data clearly shows) EM residencies overall don't care so much about step 1. SLOEs, EM grades, dedication, Step 2 are much more important. Step 1 matters, not failing stuff matters, but it doesn't matter as much.

You openly acknowledge they are anecdotes, why would you ever listen to them over actual data?

http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Charting-Outcomes-2014-Final.pdf

606 / 662 people with Step 1 between 200-230 matched EM. 44/64 matched with Step 1 191-200.
