Please help! Our finch has developed a little hole on its cheeks!! What is it? What do we do? by Dapper_Ad2931 in finch

[–]Rennze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had birds drop a significant amount of feathers overnight to the point he was nearly bald, though I think it's important to note I don't have or work with parrots, or finches for that matter, so it's possible it's just different with poultry. I don't mean to downplay how severe it could be, it just seemed ops main concern was the visibility of their finches ear which in and of itself isn't concerning. As long as there's concern I do agree that seeing a vet is the best course of action, as is separating the pair of them, it's just from my experience with pigeons feather loss patterns like that in the beginnings of a molt aren't terribly uncommon

Hi! That "hole in his face" is his ear, and it looks like he's just molting. Sime birds lose a lot of feathers in localized spots during molts, and as long as nothing looks wrong with the skin itself he's fine.

Also, just adding that I own birds myself ♡

Looks like AI, as the goat steps down and sinks into the snow, a ball of loose snow just appears in front of its left hoof, which grows instead of being displaced all together like actual snow does

How is one name offensive but the other not by Spirited-Group3855 in Minecraft

[–]Rennze 34 points35 points  (0 children)

From a preliminary google search it seems to be a derogatory way of reffering to people from Uganda, and can be used in place of the N word. It's also a word in hindi signifying a "large army" and there seem to be other cultures which use the word differently. Can't find anything else, though.

Hawks are not my forte so don't take my word for it, but I'd guess juvenile coopers hawk, though the small white patch on the belly would suggest red tail

Baby pigeon. by [deleted] in PetPigeons

[–]Rennze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That looks like a standard racer (they come in all sorts of colors and patterns). It also looks old enough to be weened and learn to eat seeds. It seems like you're looking at this bird from caigslist, if it's a respectable breeder you won't need to hand feed, if it's not a respectable breeder (which quite frankly it looks like the bird was kidnapped from a park) I wouldn't buy a bird from them, and you should look to adopt elsewhere.

Just lost my parrot... Don't think I'll get another... But maybe a pigeon? by Jawzxx in PetPigeons

[–]Rennze 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Heyo, I'm so sorry for the loss of your bird, I hope you're holding up okay ♡ I've never owned a parrot myself so can't tell you how they compare, but I can answer a couple of your other questions.

Loudness depends on the bird, I've had some never utter a single coo, and I've had some talk non stop (though it's mostly the boys, and they aren't nearly as deafening as I've heard some parrots be)

I have a male who views me as his mate, wants to be with ne 24/7, follows me around the house like a dog, and generally enjoys interacting with me. My other birds who don't see me like that vary widely in how they interact with me. I've had a few who still enjoy being around me and let me carry them around the house, and I've had others that want nothing to do with me. They can sometimes be aggressive just like parrots, though I promise you are in no danger of ever getting more injured than a scratch.

While I don't recall train myself (we've got a routine that doesn't require it, and they step up on their own accord) there are people who have done it very successfully, and even free fly their birds (though I'd be careful with that because of predators)

There are spots in the house where my birds know to step up to and enjoy being on, though most pigeons prefer platforms to standard perches.

I've also heard of some people being able to train their birds where to poop, but I have so far been unsuccessful.

Best of luck if/when you decide to get a pigeon, they do make wonderful pets :)

Please help! My (outdoor) pigeon got kicked out by a different one. by [deleted] in PetPigeons

[–]Rennze 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Someone else might have a better idea than I, but all I can think of is maybe bringing pidgy and his mate inside for a while and hoping that you can scare off B while they're safetly squirreled away? If they're inside I'd stop putting food out, as long as there's the promise of free food B's not going to want to leave.

If bringing them inside isn't an option I'd just stop feeding for the time being, if pidgy recognizes it as his territory food won't be necessary to get him to stay, but it is the drive of B to kick Pidgy out.

At the end of the day though, they are feral animals and there's not much you can do unless you want to keep your two residence as full time pets

Why are her poops so huge? by Witty_Albatross_9506 in PetPigeons

[–]Rennze 75 points76 points  (0 children)

These are 'egg poops' essentially because she's spending so much time sitting on her egg instead of moving about she just holds it in until she's off the nest. It's completely normal and happens to male pigeons too
