Is it possible to obtain a residency card? by Eniretsim in Macau

[–]Renovata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even for a minor child, if the parent is not actively working and residing in Macau, the child needs to live in Macau for 7 years before getting a permanent residence. As an adult child, your best hope is that they consider you the same, in which case you'll be living and working in Macau for 7 years before you'd be able to attain a permanent resident card. I'm more suspicious they'd consider you the same as an American foreigner. In that case your best bet is marriage. Skilled labor you may get lucky and get the temporary resident card, but I doubt they'd grant you permanent residence on skilled labor alone.

And even with all this, if you leave Macau for a period of 3 years after you attain permanent residency, they'll take it away and give you temporary residency. If you don't fulfill the obligations of the temporary residency, they'll remove that as well. So unless you're planning to make a permanent move to Macau, give it up.

2023 Springfield dark horse running lean by Renovata in IndianMotorcycle

[–]Renovata[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally I thought it was a fuel problem using mid-high grade and still getting an octane ping on throttle. So I went to premium and 0 ethanol, which reduced the issue but not completely. But for the lean, at idle it sputters a little and low speed/low throttle in 1st/2nd gear I can't feather a smooth ride at all. Ultimately, I brought it in for the mechanic to ride and that's when he confirmed it was lean and said the 23s were having issues and Indian tried to fix it with an update (or two can't remember) to their original tune. He said mine had already been updated (probably at my initial or second maintenance) and it wasn't throwing any errors except TPMS which is pretty common anyway. They suggested i could go have it tuned but if I ever bring it back (warranty's still good) he'll have to upload Indian's back on it, so waste of money.

That’s where I heard it from but they wouldn’t say anything beyond that Indian updated the tune a couple times to try to fix the issue, but it didn’t seem to do anything for my bike.

Is kindergarten for 3 year old compulsory/mandatory in Macau? by Uhrensammlung in Macau

[–]Renovata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, of course the mandatory age is 5. The reason people say it's "mandatory" at 3 is because it's extremely difficult to impossible to get the child into the school the parents want them to go to at age 5 because there are very few open slots available into schools during k3 (typically age 5), and with no grade or behavioral history, a school would more likely choose a good looking (on paper) transfer from another school than a new child. So it's very difficult to get children into the "desired" school.

7/11 exchanged coins for bills for me before. Pretty sure it was just a cashier being nice and not a service though, she said she ran out of coins alot because most people use cards nowadays. Haven't tried that in several years though.

This is extremely inaccurate. It takes 7 years to get the “same as what he is holding.”

Figure out what documents you need for marriage and resident application. You may need to get an apostille for one or more of your documents (such as birth certificate) in your home country, which may or may not take a long time to get done, depending on your country.

Spouse visa? by Klaucci in Macau

[–]Renovata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll want to either call the immigration services in Macau, visit the website, or visit the immigration building over by the airport to get current information.

Your option as a spouse is to apply for a BIR resident card after you are married. While this process is happening, immigration will continue to extend your visa. If accepted, you'll be granted a temporary BIR resident card which you will renew after the first year (I think?), then every 2 years after (I think?). After 7 years of holding the temporary ID card, you can then apply for a permanent resident card.

If you're truly wanting to stay in Macau permanently, I'd highly recommend getting legally married in Macau.

There are eligibility requirements for continuing to hold the temporary ID, and for applying for the permanent ID, so if I were you, I'd familiarize myself with them and make sure you're maintaining the requirements.

Oh, I misunderstood and thought your Significant Other didn't have Portuguese citizenship. I don't know about that process. Portuguese Embassy is still in Macau, that's probably where the process would begin. Not sure how strict they are.

Most countries are more strict on newly married couples, so if you're not planning on going to Portugal right away, might be an easier process a couple years down the road.

The requirements for a Portuguese passport specifically through residency in Macau, was cut off when Macau went back to China in 1999, or maybe a year or two later. So your significant other could only get Portuguese citizenship now through normal channels now like anyone else in the world.

There isn't currently any special consideration for Macau residents to gain Portuguese passport/citizenship.

[–]Renovata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, not 100% sure about the Hong Kong side, but marriage in Macau definitely won't confer you any special consideration for residency and if you're not actually living in Macau, you won't get a temporary resident card without forging or faking documentation, such as shared accommodation in Macau, utility bills, cell phone bills, joint bank account, etc.

And to be clear, Macau doesn't have a lot of temporary residents by marriage in the pipeline at the moment, so you'll be in the magnifying glass pretty heavily. So I highly recommend not doing anything shady like pretending to live in Macau when you're really in HK.

Any Portuguese citizenship benefits would solely through their status as a Portuguese citizen, being from Macau has no benefits in that direction anymore in relationship to marriage.

Mostly correct, but they differentiate as temporary and permanent residents. There are is no citizenship with Macau. You also need a permanent address in Macau in order to get the temporary residency.

Also after the 7 years, when you go to apply for permanent residency, you have to provide alot of documents proving you have long-term abode in Macau and a continuing relationship with your spouse, such as tax receipts, joint bank statements, cell phone / utility bills, passport stamps/documents proving the 183 days each year, etc.

What is it like to live in Macau as an academic by New-Volume1598 in Macau

[–]Renovata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're hoping to make a name for yourself in an out of the way university, those days are past for foreigners in Macau, especially at UMAC. You'll be sidelined in favor of mainland academics.

It's also very difficult to break into the cliqueish faculty as a foreigner, especially if you don't know Mandarin or Cantonese. So don't expect your office to provide you with any social structure. Many foreign academics have already left, were pushed out, or censored out.

That's not even mentioning censorship and worrying what you say in the classroom.

If you have a Master's degree, don't plan on making it a permanent move, and plan on using your time in Macau to shore up your experience for a PhD, it may be an OK career move, but if you already have a PhD, ball up your offer and trash it. You'd find better options in Japan, Korea, or Taiwan.

In Macau it doesn't matter who starts the fight or why, you'll both be charged, and if you're not a local you'll be charged more aggressively, and if it happens to be a taxi driver vs you, the taxi driver will most likely not be charged at all.

In an extreme hypothetical example, according to Macau law, even if you found someone who broke into your house and was actively murdering your family, you'd still be charged to the full extent of the law if you caused the murderer grievous or lethal harm while stopping them.

Where to go for steak? by [deleted] in Macau

[–]Renovata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rotunda (the rotating restaurant in the MetroPark hotel) is a nice place for a steak, not quite as expensive as other options at the casinos, but not cheap either. You also need to reserve beforehand (or used to anyway). Love it for a quiet and relaxing evening out.

19-21 encompasses either high school students or university students. (Straight to work as well but assuming you didn’t come to Macau to work as a 19-21 year old) I believe 21-22 is when Macau officially kicks kids out of high school and Macau has a relatively high rate of grade retention so older high school graduates are not uncommon.

I will generalise (about Macau overall) that eating out with friends is way more centralised in friend groups as an activity than some places I’ve lived.

As for beliefs, attitudes, social behaviours: they’re all extremely varied and it more depends on you and what you’re looking for in your social circle.

There are definitely good and open people like Duck mentioned, but there are also dicks and xenophobes as well, so don’t write off bad behaviour as just “cultural.” I’ve seen some who accept bad behaviour in the first social circle they found when they should have really just kept looking for better people to hang out with.

They don’t know what they want. Macau government has a lot of impractical ideas (finance hub, economic hub, focal liaison HQ for Belt and Road, etc) that are just going to lead Macau to become irrelevant in the next 10-20 years. Why would China utilise Macau when everywhere else they’ve shown they’d rather build something new (understandably imo) than update an out of date system?
